Chris O’Toole of West Nyack didn’t hear from her New York City Firefighter husband Joseph for 2 days after 9/11. Toolie, as he was called, was off duty on 9/11 and had gone to work his side job as a carpet Installer. When he got word of the attack, he immediately called Chris to say he was heading to his firehouse in The Bronx. Chris remembers the call lasted just a few seconds. Cellphones were going down. Toolie called Chris again when he arrived at Ladder 41, telling her he didn’t know when he’d be able to call again, that they were heading to respond. There was no shielding the children. Their oldest, Jeanette, has just started a teaching job in Westchester. Beth was a junior in college. Brian was only a junior in high school but was already following in Toolie’s footsteps, volunteering with the West Nyack Fire Department. Chris kept calling the firehouse but no one there knew if Toolie was ok. The family spent the next two days panicked, not knowing if Toolie was dead or alive until he finally was able to call Thursday. They didn’t’ see him again until Sunday, 5 days after 9/11.
He didn’t talk much but he did tell Chris about the horror of finding body parts. A hand. A finger. Chris says the morning of 9/11 was the last day she knew her husband without PTSD, saying “How do you un-see that??!! He was never the same. But he was very good at hiding it”. Toolie would only stay hours with the family on that Sunday, before heading back to “The Pile”, as it was called. Before he left the house to return to the pile, Chris wrote Toolie’s name on his arm and leg, also writing his FDNY badge number. She didn’t know if she’d see him again. Toolie worked down there a full 9 months.
His first 9/11 illness came two years later: nodules in his lungs. He continued to work for the FDNY, and in 2012, Toolie was diagnosed with 9/11 bile duct cancer. The prognosis was he’d probably live a few months, but for 4 years, this fighter refused to give up. Chris remember Toolie telling her, “This is not going to get me”. He told her he had no regrets, that he’d do it all over again, in a heartbeat. Joseph “Toolie” O’Toole died December 12, 2016. He was 61.

Not tryna be rude or mean or anything , this man is a American hero 100 percent ! But we can’t work our way into heaven no matter what we do , Jesus did the work and the fights already been won , only thru him can we achieve our salvation , our righteousness is as filthy rags according to the Bible which I believe is the infallible word of GOD .

@@teddyhaynes9876 yes and we don’t know he may have accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Only the Lord knows that. But I feel he is in Heaven. Not our place to say whether he did or not. Amen!

PTSD, depression and illness. So sad the family lost a dedicated man. Just to clarify, people in the military are not prepared or trained to see the horrors of war. My husband still sees that same thing 50 plus years after he left Vietnam.

I’m still reeling from the memory of that day. NO ONE should look on our response as being a mistake. Mishandled by politicians, yes. A mistake, no. We were justified to demand justice.

Absolutely heartbreaking 😔. I’m so sorry for your loss! It still makes me so angry that they claimed that air was “safe” 😒. Everyone who claimed that belongs in prison. My heart goes out to you and your family. God bless you 🙏🏼❤️

I have heard that those who cleared away the rubble etc should have been added to the statistics of 9/11 deaths, because all the toxins they breathed in while working caused a lot of deaths and is still ongoing. Every one of them is a hero and the world is a sadder place for their loss.

i can remember being transfixed, horrified and so sad about 9/11.... The victims of this tragedy arent forgotten, despite being on the other side of the world...i expected the PTSD, but had never really accounted for the "toxic illnesses" and the havoc these wreaked on families.. I think that the military should have been in more control! So at least they would have been more suitable with their expertise! Their efforts to coordinate with fireman and policemen could have saved lives! 350 dead fireman and police is just too much!

I've seen a dozon of these 9/11 stories which are just bone-chilling and unbelievable and amazing though. Very sad. But one thing is that some said that they can't believe or it's impossible that this country can be attacked in the manner of which it was. Yes it true, should be impossible but the thing we need to know has tough as this nation is which trust me it is, it's not expendable. Anything can happen to any country or nation in the world even here in the U.S. Especially if you let your guard down for a split second and say or think that, naaa ain't nothing going to happen here. When it can when not expected. First in happened in 1993 then on 9/11 then throughout these 20 plus years we had other similar experience with terrorism just not has bad and as impacting as 9/11. Facts. Hopefully now we can learn from those mistakes and make this nation just as strong as before.

If only people could all listen to JESUS - properly!! Such a lot of suffering could be avoided. Body parts are ONLY of the Body. A person's Spirit & Soul stays in tact. If people could just stop & think!! Heaven is not full of dismembered souls - all souls in Heaven are complete - no pain , watching down on their loved ones suffering needlessly. There are consequences of not listening to JESUS - people suffer for reasons they do not need to suffer for.

The problem is that people needed to use common sense to understand that. If he was anywhere near that burning pile it was toxic it had a ton of asbestos in it and a lot of people die of moncancer. Or had all sorts of strange lesions on their skins and Donna Summer died of lung cancer and blamed it on the burning pile when I was living. There and working 2 blocks from there. They made us. Go? Back 2. Weeks after the attack? And I said to everyone do you smell that that's the smell of death you have better? Put a face mask on or something or you're going to die.
