“There are certain sounds and smells in your life that you never forget. The sound I’m never gonna forget is the firefighter’s. When they’re wearing their oxygen tanks and they don’t move for ten, fifteen, twenty seconds, it chirps. We went back in and all you heard was chirping. Chirp...chirp ...chirp.” These words are part of former NYPD Detective Jimmy Rudolph’s 9/11 Story.
That sound, that chirp, after the collapse of the first tower, remains the most vivid memory from 9/11 for Jimmy Rudolph, who was then an NYPD patrolman at Transit District 2 in Lower Manhattan. 9/11 was the second time he responded to terrorism at the World Trade Center. As one of the first responders to the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993, when a truck bomb killed 6 people, Jimmy helped save the life of a New York City firefighter, who had fallen through the floor into the garage. That firefighter was lucky to survive, and Rudolph was awarded one of the NYPD’s highest honors, the Medal of Valor, for his life saving efforts.
8 years later, Jimmy Rudolph was part of what he called “probably the best rescue ever between the fire and the police department. A lot of people made it out of that building and survived because of our rescue efforts”.
Today on “9/11 Stories”, available on podcast and KZfaq video:
Actor/comedian Adam Ferrara is best known as Chief Needles Nelson on FX’s “Rescue Me”, NYPD Sgt. Frank Verelli, Edie Falco’s boyfriend on “Nurse Jackie” , and as co-host of the U.S. version of “Top Gear”.

Hello sir. What amazes me is the fact that the firemens air tanķs still chirpeď even though they didn't find literally anything left. It is amazingly spiritual.

The chirps are made by a device called a Pass Alarm. In a collapse, if a firefighter is trapped, they emit a continuous high pitched sound so others can locate him or her. What Jimmy was referring to was the sound of hundreds sounding off together until the batteries finally died. It is a sound you never want to hear.

The chirps were mostly from the firemen who were killed outside on the ground, in vehicles and in the command & control area that had been set up near the church. They found bodies and bodyparts of many of those firemen.

I agree with what he said about the media saying too much in the aftermath of ‘93. I loved his perspective on the towers. Engineer’s perspective. They did what they were designed to do. We are all sad that they collapsed, but we sometimes forget that they took the hits and stood. Imagine if they had collapsed immediately.

I heard that Michael Jackson was supposed to have a meeting at the world trade center or supposed to be on one of the planes that hit the tower but he over slept🤯 crazy

Exactly. But I don't appreciate him spreading disinformation like the jet fuel theory for example.
