There but for the grace of God….31 year old FDNY’er Paul Falla was on the job only 2 years on 9/11, and just finishing his 24 hour shift at Engine 34 in the Bronx, when the alarms sounded. Heading out to respond, no one on the fire rig looked at the ticket, which tells them where to report. They all assumed they were supposed to be going down to The World Trade Center. Just several miles away from The WTC at 34th street, someone looked at the ticket and realized they were traveling in the wrong direction. They were actually supposed to report to a staging area in Harlem, to join 5 or 6 other FDNY companies. Had the men at Engine 34 continued down to The World Trade Center, they almost certainly would have died along with the 343 other New York City firefighters who perished in the collapse of the twin towers. Ultimately, the men from Engine 34 were ordered down to the World Trade Center. By the time they got there, one tower had already collapsed. They watched the second tower fall, engulfing them in a blackout. Paul Falla says it was like a scene out of “Planet Of The Apes”, hauntingly, eerily, quiet. There was nothing left. Nothing. He saw no chairs. No desks. No computers. Only some papers and a thick, packed dust...and a woman’s freshly manicured hand emerging from the ashes.

It is so terrible how all the people who were at Ground Zero have these health problems. He downplayed what he had wrong, then listed a long catalogue of health issues he has. So terrible. I hope he is getting all the medical help he needs. What a nice man, I wish him well.

All of these men and women are amazing. Almost every one of them, when asked how their health is, have said, "I'm ok. I have to do XYZ just to breathe, I can barely swallow, I take X number of medications, I have GERD, PTSD, etc, but I'm ok." They're all absolutely amazing.

It was refreshing in a way to hear that he did not want to go to the site of the collapse. It was honest.

Same here, I've been watching so many of these survivor's interviews....When this gentleman mentioned seeing a lady's manicured hand sticking out of the rubble I wanted to cry... What a horrific thing that happened that day!!

Me too! I almost feel like I owe it to each of them to listen and try to understand what they went through. I’m not a politician but IMO-all Politicians should be required to listen and UNDERSTAND if that’s even possible for them.

Paul I appreciate you too. My son joined the Air Force because of 9/11 and served two tours in Iraq as a firefighter. He has also struggled with what he went thru....first convoy into Baghdad ..at the airport. Most of what he has told us thank God for the Marines. Blessings.

What a horrific experience you had, and continue to have, Paul. I am grateful to you for telling us about it. It's important that those of us who were not there know what you did, and what you suffer as a direct consequence.

I had GERD/acid reflux problems that were being caused by an underlying undiagnosed condition. I also had problems swallowing from it, even choked on mashed squash once and needed assistance. It was terrible. I can only imagine how Paul is feeling.😭

Please inform him, choking on your food is one of the first symptoms of esophageal cancer. I watched my father in law choke at the dining table on spaghetti and I informed him he needed to get to the doc asap as it was a sign of esophageal C, he has since died from it. I knew that because of a podcast I had seen a few months earlier or I would have never known

this is the first time I have heard about the limitations of the scott mask. I always wondered why we didnt see more usage of this in the dust cloud. It makes sense now, in the worst situation they only had 6 minutes or so

I used to take Prilosec OTC daily for GERD and I had heart palpitations. I've scaled that back to only once every 5 days and the heart palpitations have basically gone away.

Hello, just wondering how the paper survives but the office furniture & computers don't, only concrete dust and steel beams.
