I really liked how the listeners in the room imposed themselves onto the lecture by asking probing questions, and how Prof. Lieb was not inhibiting these interventions. This degree of interactivity between relative expert and relative ingenue is essential to learning. The old-fashioned stand-and-deliver lecture format must go! (But will it ever?).

The papers on axiomatic Thermodynamics by Lieb and Yngvason have achieved a relatively high status in the literature on this topic. It’s great to have this lecture on KZfaq

This entropy function and the theorem about its existence look so much like the von Neumann-Morgenstein utility function and the existence theorem of such a utility function. Even the notations are very similar.
