This is real history. This is the last time the Anthem of the USSR was ever played at a professional international sporting event. Team USSR lost because all of its star players had remained at home because of the country's collapse, and the team's participation was only decided at the last minute.

JohnTheGreat7822 I disagree. When you cut ties with other countries (depending on the economic situation) the country will either be able to sustain itself or it will slowly decline. Whichever way Russia would have gone, they didn't because they spent all their money on military advancments instead of putting it back into their country.

I’m an American, however I feel really bad for the Soviet Players. Their anthem was being played incorrectly and being disrespected, while knowing that most of the crowd hated them, while having to deal with the fact that their country was slowly falling apart back home.

First off, even as an American myself, I feel offended. Here are a few reasons why: 1: The Americans played the Soviet anthem horribly, and all the players got was a few slow claps at the end. 2: The Americans played their own anthem beautifully, and everyone burst into wild applause at the end. 3: I have heard the Red Army Choir sing the American anthem. It was one of the best versions I've ever heard, they sang it as if it were their own. 4: The fact that Americans have foreign visitors in their country. They should respect their guests. Just because the two nations weren't exactly friendly didn't mean that they had to treat each other like trash. The Soviets' country was at the point of collapse, for Pete's sake. I'm not a communist, I just feel bad for the Soviets. 10/10 would cheer for them.

I feel bad for the Soviet players. They are there playing in a sporting event where almost the whole crowd dislikes them. Meanwhile, they know in the back of their minds that their country is falling to pieces and that the event is pointless in preserving their nation. Also, I feel that the fans shown in the video were disrespectful, they should have at least been quiet during both anthems.

I feel sorry for these USSR (СССР) players. Their nation was falling apart right before their eyes, many of their star players were decided to stay back home, and even their own anthem (which I still think today is a pretty good song) was butchered, maybe intentionally. Everything was coming crashing down, and a few short months later the Soviet Union these players represented would be completely dissolved. I truly feel bad for those players

+infinitecanadian I feel like it's a bit unfair :/ I cringed when I heard the over zealous voice singing the U.S. anthem, but I guess the U.S. suceeded in toppling down the USSR by supplying stinger missiles and Chinese made AK-47s to the Mujahideen which then evolved to Al-Qaeda.

+SovietTenkDestroyer, I see your point, I agree that they kicked their own balls but, the US national anthem doesn't represent our nations beliefs as the USSR does with their's. Communism only fails when it fears its competitors and implements an authoritarian ideology. China, however is still communist and making 4 times America's GDP. The only reason the two nations don't go head to head is because of the tension and fear as seen in the Cold War, and that fear will cause the governments of both to collapse and become vulnerable to free-for-all revolution. They also might launch missiles due to superstition of each others plans for war and result in civil unrest, and world destruction. The combined power of nuclear missiles between US and USSR in the Cold War, was enough to destroy the whole earth 200,000 times.

As an American I feel incensed at the way they Americans there conducted themselves. They were so rude and disrespectful to the Soviet team and openly hostile. This was the Glasnost/Perestroika Soviet Union that was democratizing and warming to the west and the audience still treated them like enemies. They even asked the lyrics not be used probably b/c of the message and they had to stand there listening to their poorly played anthem while their nation was literally collapsing back home. I’m so sorry to Team Soviet Union.

I had thought that the lyrics weren't played perhaps because the USSR was collapsing. This was after the August 1991 coup attempt, but prior to the final collapse of the USSR; I'm assuming that the lyrics' message wouldn't even resonate with the Soviet players by this point. not always, check your facts also, most if not all countries with the Socialist system failed with the will of their leaders, just look at Gorbachov and Yeltsin how they became america's best friends after the USSR collapsed, some common sense would show you how things were and why they happend. Meanwhile, only 30% of capitalist countries in the world are actually successfull and prosperious, while the rest are total shitholes, I'd say that capitalism failed there, and that sounds dumb. A country doesn't have to be a failed country because of it's system, mainly it's the people leading it. Even my country, Yugoslavia didn't fail because of the Socialist system, it mainly failed of the decaying of bad leadership who accepted money from the west (fact) to break down the country. Most fuss when our war started was on nationalism, nobody really even spoke or discussed about the two systems, and yet afterwards capitalism sneaked in quietly. Also it's not a coincidence that all Socialist countries sunk just right at 1990-1991, and I really mean ALL countries sunk in those few years.

One of the saddest moments in the history of Soviet Union. Their anthem disrespected and trashed in the country they were enemies with. Very sad. Edit: I am not Russian nor communist but disrespecting an anthem is a big insult. It does not matter which place or belief you come from. catsarecats The Cold War wasn’t between governments and militaries. Two peoples who lived in different Societies couldn’t coexist. Communism is a threat to democracy like democracy is a threat to communism. The USSR anthem isn’t truly culture of the Russian people but the culture of a communist dictatorship that failed horrendously to bring what the people hoped for when they fought in their civil war. This was a symbol of victory over the USSR, the nation that was the enemy of the US. Neither countries could coexist, and it’s obvious who lost the war. I will admit that it is a disrespectful bashing of the Soviet people who were only stuck with their nation like most Germans were come 1945, they might not of supported their government but they loved their nation.

The Chicago Stadium Barton Theatre Organ was one of the few real pipe organs ever installed in a sports arena, and unfortunately it's last major tune up was in 1985!! hence it sounding a little off here. It also didn't help that they used too many of the bad sounding pipe ranks for this playing. I've never seen such disrespect for a country that was falling apart back at home. They completely ruined the soviets anthem and made the American anthem sound real powerful, in fact everyone kept cheering for the USA throughout it being sang. I could even see the disappointment in each of the Soviet Player's faces when they heard their anthem all jacked up like they were nothing, the Americans rushed through that as if it was nothing. I'm American myself and will stay American, but this makes me despise my own Countries Choices and Decisions. I don't ever want to see something as light hearted and disrespectful as this towards another country ever again. Especially if the country is at near death back at their homeland.

Yeah, that's Americans for you... Not only did they disrespect the CCCP team by altering their anthem and skipping parts of it, they even disrespected their own anthem by shouting and cheering. No matter which country's anthem is played, you should stand in attention!
