I've tried all the solutions. Traps seem to just catch the adults going out for a stroll after they're done laying tons of eggs. Neem oil and insect soap seemed to slow them down a bit, but regular application still didn't eliminate them. Mosquito bits seem to have the longest term impact but I found that the gnats will still come back if I let the soil dry all the way out then water it again. I think the only solution left is to burn the house down and start from scratch.

I have no house plants and I hear you. They're not in our drains but seem to be reproducing in my flower beds and come inside my house. They're driving me crazy although I may only see 5 to 10 a day but they zigzag all over and yes they fly in your face and they try to get on my plate at dinner time.

worst part is if you listen to her you will spend over 100 dollars to get rid of gnats and still have the problem when you are done. this lady is like so many others here on yoptube just a salesman who will tell you anything to sell a product. every video you watch on youtube now has something to sell and use very deceptive practices to get you to buy their crap. i tried every method she has said and they dont work. at best they keep them down to a minimum that is all. you will have to keep buying the products over and over again. even the mosquito bits she does not tell you how to use it but i have tried up to 4 tablespoons to one gallon of water and it still does not work. if the person is selling something run like hell and dont listen to them their job is to convince you to buy it.

When I moved into my first "real" apartment I decided I wanted to beautify it with plants, so I bought 8 houseplants from Trader Joe's. It was Spring time. A few days later I saw a few little flies, so I squashed them, but after a few weeks my whole apartment was infested. I was so embarrassed. After trying a few things and doing research, what worked best for me was: first, make sure the soil is dry; treat the soil weekly (or as scheduled) during your normal watering for a month with hydrogen peroxide (I used 1 gallon of water and 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide for all the plants to not damage them); set up shot glasses beside the plants with apple cider vinegar and 4-5 drops of soap on the surface; place yellow sticky tape above or near the infected plants, remove weekly or when filled with gnats; spray the leaves with a mixture of 1-cup water, 2 table spoons white vinegar, and a tea spoon of soap. Spraying the leaves prevents other bugs, as well, from eating the leaves. After a month they will be gone, you can till the top soil and return to watering and caring for your plants as usual.

Here's what has finally worked for me after weeks of battling an infestation: I removed the top two inches of soil form each affected plant, let them really dry out (for me it took like 3 weeks because these are big plants in big pots!). Meanwhile, I set yellow sticky traps, sprayed the soil with neem oil (not sure how effective this was, but it was worth a shot). By far the most effective was the window fly traps, clear sticky traps that adhere to your windows easily. They've caught nearly a hundred between the two traps, maybe more! Once the plants were well and truly dried, I watered using a mosquito bit solution and for the last few days I've seen very few flies and the problem is markedly decreased. Best of luck to everyone, you will prevail!

So I've cut back on the watering and used the mosquitos bits and hydrogen peroxide and I've noticed a huge reduction in the population. I also purchased a wall plug in Dyna Tarp. This thing is awesome. And if you don't like the smell of Apple cider vinegar you can try a teaspoon of sugar to about 5 ounces of water and a few drop of Dawn dish detergent. Works well with no smell. Happy growing.

My 4 year old wanted to "help mommy water her plants" so she poured it on my watermelon peperomia and my african violet. Needless to say all of those plants are now chopped up into little pieces attempting to re-grow the roots that VERY quickly died. Apparently vinegar and roots don't mix. Lesson learned. :D

Thank you! Will be trying these ASAP. Also, the reason you need to wear eye and respiratory protective gear when working with diatomaceous earth is, as you mentioned with the bugs, that it is a silica (glass) dust and it can scratch your eye or get into your lungs (which is pretty harmful). Fun fact, diatomaceous earth is the remains of little ocean dwelling critters.

Along with the 9 things you mentioned, I also use a bug catcher. It attracts them with a blue light and when they get too close it sucks them in. Then, they fall to the bottom where there is a sticky trap. Same as the yellow sticky traps but not yellow. It works really well! Great video!

Beneficial nematodes saved me and my plants from fungus gnats. I tried neem oil, nothing. I tried hydrogen peroxide, no good. I used sticky traps, they worked a treat but the gnats just kept coming and coming! So I bought some beneficial nematodes online, applied them and topped all my plants with sharp sand. I put new sticky traps out too. That was 3 months ago and the traps are completely clear of gnats. Me:1 Gnats:0!!

I had a very serious fungus gnats infestation in my large fiddle leaf fig tree. I tried Neem Oil with very limited success. I also used Neem pellets (I can't recall the specific name) which I mixed into the top two inches of soil and let the soil really dry out, I also per your recommendation used the Yellow Sticky Traps so my final treatment (3 in total) were Mosquito Bits. Remember my soil was dried out, I had mixed in Neem pellets and placed the Yellow Sticky 'traps throughout the pot and steeped the Mosquito Bits in water and watered with the MB water. WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!! Your advise worked and I really didn't think anything could help. Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve tried a lot of things to control gnats. I’ve noticed you were “spraying” a tiny amount of diatomaceous earth dust on the leaves of the plant, but I have personally put one inch of it directly on potting soil to cover it ALL, with a spoon, and it DID work! It may not be aesthetic, because now I feel like I have white soil everywhere, but it worked sooo well and I will probably just put tiny rocks or sand on top of it to make it look more cute.

I’ve been using the neem oil method you were talking about, saturating the top layer of soil, especially right after a thorough watering. I feel like it acts almost like a sealant that kills whatever gnats are already in the root system and prevents more gnats from traveling down INTO the soil when it’s moist after a watering.

I had fungus gnats and I put a dish of water with a drop of dish soap near the plants that they hung around. They land in the water and get stuck. It's not the fastest way to kill them but it just takes a minute to set it up and you can do it with what you already have at home. I still have some gnats occasionally but it got rid of most of them.

I had a serious plague last summer that I had to remove my plants completely. Since then I searched internet and implemented this method and now I have clean and beautiful plants for more than a year. 1. cover the top of the pots with sands making a slim layer. Another layer could be made by putting more soul on the sands if the color is not favorable. 2. Feed water from the bottom of the pots using basin or bathtub. Keep the top portion of the pot dry all the time. Wish this might be a help.

I had a lot so I did a combo attack of the apple cider vinegar/soap/water mixture, one with some balsamic and apple cider vinegar, one with just apple cider vinegar, some fruit fly traps that look like little apples and had a vinegar smelling liquid in them, and then these sheets of sticky paper (fly paper?) since I couldn't find the ones that stick in the soil. The sticky paper worked the best. I just laid flat on the soil and trapped almost all of them in the first 24 hours. The vinegar traps caught some, with the straight apple cider one doing the best. The little fruit fly traps were worthless (presumably since they're for fruit flies, but I thought it was worth a shot). Good luck to you all in your endeavors.

Noooo. 😣. I made a trap for them. In a tiny cup, small enough to fit inside your pot I filled it halfways with a mixture of apple cider vinegar, a few squirts of sish soap and a dash of vanilla. It killed so many and I put a trap in each pot yhga was giving me trouble as well as a couple on my counter. The traps contained at least 30 each every week until I was down to a few. Now I keep refilling the traps and leave it in the pot. But be careful not to let the mixture touch the leaves or it will probably kill the leaves.
