As embarrassing as it is I feel it is important to share some of my own stuff ups with my own hunting dogs. I hope some of my own mistakes help you dog owners not come undone as I have in the past. I have some regrets and could have done better by my dogs. Dogs are a mans best friend but sometimes I wonder if man is really a dog's best friend. Clay

Yes raising two pups together is absolutely the most important the thing to learn from, most city slickers don't understand how important it is that you can't raise two siblings together.

@Phillip Matchitt yeah mate I know, I probably should have used a different word but it was the closest, I'm a city slicker myself, I didn't actually mean it in a derogatory way at all. I meant it as we are more detached from nature it's self. Ofcourse not all city people are glooming idiots as some may think. Much respect to you mate.

All excellent advice, especially scolding a returning dog. Your winter, thankfully our summer. Shock collars are banned in Wales, probably because of the f-wits who abuse their dogs with them. I was advised against rehoming 2 dumped pups as I was told they would not bond with our older dog. Good advice!

Interesting what you said about raising siblings together, i had two staggy cross brothers in the eigties which were the best team i ever had and we regularly hunted with their parents as well. The only thing we did do was take one out alone when he was three month old to hang around with the older dogs and watch.

Excellent vid brother. Interesting the difference between sled dogs and pug dogs. With sled dogs, it can be a huge benefit to run siblings together, for exactly the same reason it is not a good idea with hunting dogs. They are bonded to each other and it's easy to create the team if they are already a unit. Otherwise, every rule there can be applied to sleddogs!

Most of my dogs I trained for farm/home protection on horse farms, they were not allowed to touch anything mine(scent) or what we worked with on the farm. Other small critters squirrels, rabbits wild pack strays where their own decision to chase off or sport a bit, as long as my scent was not on it. Taught them to hold what ever was 2 or 4 legged until I got there and keep it out of trouble while I was away or sleeping.

Well said mate , I think the young thing can be ABIT wrong... I'd definitely work and teach it before 6 months , but running with the pack or over running definitely a bad thing... I think one on one is definitely a better option for under 6 months and also create a bond with owner more than other dogs... Then gradually introduce them to more and more... I walk mine every day , just on 10 months , some days he will run 10-15k other days he will only travel maybe 3 walking pace , all depends if the pigs are around... But everyone is different, but some awesome pointers mate !!
@ClayTallStories

I would change that a bit today. Larger breeds I would run after 6 months old to give their joints a chance to develop. Lighter terrier types I would start earlier

Yes, Leo. There are plenty of top hunting packs around that are made up of siblings. I have a mate who runs 3 siblings and they go well. Getting them to a high level of obedience I have always found to be harder when siblings. Maybe your friends have some info that I don't? I would be keen to hear more about them and what their trick is? I might learn something new if that is the case.

I keep hearing guys say it's bad to bond with your dog. It makes them not range to go find the hog. Is this true?
@ClayTallStories
@ClayTallStories 5 жыл бұрын
Not at all. A dog will work harder for you if there is a good bond. What you don't want is a dog that stays by your side all the time but once they work out what you want of them there is no stopping them. Dogs only want to please their masters...unless their masters are asreholes and even then they still remain loyal.

Siblings hunt very well together. It all depends on what level of obedience you want? Can you call them all off a sow. If you want to teach them to toilet and drink on command before a long road trip? Raising siblings is fun and I have done it but my most obedient dogs have always been raised solo.
