Rule 1 - Eat Plenty of Protein
Protein is the main driver of muscle growth and should be the number one priority in your nutrition plan. Strive for at least 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight, and consider going as high as 1.5 grams per pound, especially when following an intense training regimen like this one.
Rule 2 - Eat (Protein) Frequently
Recent research suggests that consuming protein every 4-6 hours is optimal to maximize muscle growth, not 3 hours like I've told you to before. Why? This timeframe supposedly provides your muscle machinery with the resources it needs to maximize growth while also ensuring it has an adequate "break" soon after before repeating the process.
Rule 3 - Get Ample Fats
If protein is your highest priority, fat is next on the list. It plays a major role in supporting muscle growth, health, and performance, so don't neglect it-period. My rule for fat intake is to consume half your body weight per day in grams of fat. That means a 180-pound individual will strive to consume 90 grams of fat per day.
Rule 4 - Manipulate Carbs
Everyone's body responds to carbohydrates differently, so after you set your protein and fat intake, experiment with your carbohydrate intake to determine what works best for you. Aiming for 1.5-2.0 grams of carbohydrates per pound of body weight (on a training day at minimum) is a solid starting place.
Rule 5 - Macronutrients Over Calories
I'm not a huge stickler on calorie amounts. Yes, calorie intake is important, but rather than focusing on a calories-first approach, I suggest building your diet from the macros up to ensure you're providing your body with the necessary fuel to support strength gains. If you follow my above rules, your caloric intake will come out to be 15-19 calories per pound of body weight.
Rule 6 - Use a Protein Powder Blend
For me, the only thing better than whey or casein is whey and casein. When you blend these two protein sources, the fast-digesting whey will ensure you rapidly promote an anabolic (muscle-building) environment, while the casein will help you sustain it for a long time-maybe as long as 6-8 hours. This will reduce the time you spend in a state of muscle breakdown and maximize the time spent in a state of growth. To fully round out your protein shake, I suggest the inclusion of medium-speed digesting protein, too.
Rule 7 - Use Fast-Digesting Carbs After Workouts
Carbohydrates are your muscles' primary fuel source during exercise. The greater the intensity and length of your training, the more the body depletes its carbohydrate stores. This happens! But when it does, you need to rectify it quickly.

Great to see most on here are not falling for this money-making swindle. The fitness industry has fallen so far it's tragic.. it's just one big hustle. I've been training since I was 15 (35 now) and I can honestly say the best, most consistent gains I ever made was when I ditched all this supplement bullshit and just concentrated on whole foods.

TBH i have lost 120 pounds do to Shortcut to shred and following the nutrient plan Jim has layed out and been doing the program for six months using pro JYM pre JYM and post JYM with the fast digesting carbs and vita JYM and Omega JYM i mean it sucks that the program did not work for you but it does work for sum

Firstly, congratulations on the weight loss, that's terrific. My personal journey was from the other direction, trying to gain muscle mass and strength. My problem with people like Jim here, is that there's always a pitch. Fitness influencers have crafted a very precise way of pushing their products onto gullible consumers, weaving their sales pitch into every workout routine and "diet" plan. Back to my original post, been training since the age of 15, and I've tried them all, you name it, I bought it.. always believing that since next muscle mass stack and supplement regimen would work. The amount of money I threw down the drain! It wasn't until I stopped all that, and changed my focus from supplements to actual food that I really saw the gains and physical transformation that I had been looking for all those years. Check out James Linker on his channel Shredded Sports Science.. and The Bioneer.. they really changed my outlook.

Karen Brierley Powders are a supplement. Key word, supplement. It has its benefits, like convenience and grams per volume, but you should never think of them as a key staple in diet. The sodium content is wild in most powders.

I feel so sorry for beginners watching this video. The only ”good” supplement in this video is caffeine. The rest is complete bullshit. Creatine obviously works too, however, timing is irrelevant and this 1,5g/lb protein is way too much. 0.7-1g/lb according to all research out there is optimal for gaining muscle. This amount does slightly go up if you are eating in an energy deficit (to maintain LBM and reduce hunger) As for timing, well, if you’re doing intermittent fasting, just ignore next sentence. If not, eating something before your workout MIGHT increase performance and eating something within 1-3 hours after your workout would be ideal. Also the timing component is also only relevant for very advanced lifters trying to eek out every single ounce of muscle mass possible. So yeah, stay consistent, do not overthink stuff and keep slaying it.

rule 1: carb timing rule 2 : carb cycling rule 3: Exploiting the post and pre-workout workout window of opportunity, load on simple carbs one hour before and complex carbs 2-3 hours before, and get simple fast diesting carbs immediately after workout in a shake and also a meal rule 4: sleep quality rule 5: eating carbs as close to before and after workout as possible Rule 6: workout later during the day, fast during the morning for accelerated fatloss rule 7: comsume fats and proteins earlier throughout your day rule 8: workout later in your day rule 9: water and hydration, also consume bcca's throughout daily for optimal recovery whilst you get your water rule 10: if someone knows more please advice me and also i might be mistaken with some of these principles, please correct me.

One correction - recent evidence based nutrition studies/ findings - now show that fast acting carbohydrates do nothing for recovery post workout - it was discovered that 25-30 grams Whey protein with water was the best option by far - nothing else made a difference.

@@keepitreal435 this video is clearly not for beginners...it says for building muscle which unless you're a pro shouldn't be concerned about..exercise is about health and building muscle is about body building..the people using this program are more advanced and know the foods hes referring to when he says "protein" and "fast digesting carbs". If you dont understand you should start with beginner videos..also, you shouldn't be worried about supplements if youre not a pro..supplements are just that, to supplement whats lacking in whole foods..if you're eating right and working out 3 days a week its not needed.

oh yeah. that was a red flag as to the bro science to come. there are way better fast acting, natural, none preservative filled, carbs to take in after a workout. For example, some berries would be a fantastic replacement minutes after a pump than gummies.

Dicksauce McGee Not sure what studies you are looking at, but from what I've seen, consuming anything over .7 to .8 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight does not increase protein synthesis AT ALL. The only reason you would need anywhere near 1.5 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight is if you aren't natural. That is my response to your last statement regarding successful bodybuilders, take that as you will. It actually does hurt to consume that much protein. First of all, you are consuming unnecessary calories, and second, you end up spending more money for food. Protein isn't cheap.

setting aside whether the amounts and types of supplements and foods are correct here i am a perfect example of how critical diet is to training.i am now 60 years old and had the great idea at 58 years of age to hit the gym being over weight i decided to train my ass off and diet at the same time thinking build muscle by my body living off the excess fat i was carrying i had visions of building up getting stronger whilst losing weight.i blasted away at all the machines free standing weights cardio machines and at 59 after months of training gained no strength at all finally ending up in hospital with all my joints swollen like balloons. after recovery i went back to the gym alternating muscle groups and throwing the weight loss idea aside carried on with my protein shakes and protein foods but added carbs which i was leaving out in an effort to lose weight. i am now seeing a rapid increase in strength and muscle definition.on reflection i firmly believe that the lack of carbs was the main reason for no gain along with not enough recovery time.sorry this is boring but yes im proof how vital eating enough is

Excellent video, well explained. I watched a little background on Jim he has life experience plus college education in the subjects. I was seeing in the comments about a 2000 cal ceiling and the 1.5 g protein would push you over that. Like Jim said 1.5 g of protein, 0.5 g of fat, 1.5 to 2.0 g of carbs and those calories based in your body weight should be a good starting point with reducing carbohydrates as low as 0.5 in the last three weeks. I tend to be more carbs sensitive so I started at 1.5 g of carbs then drop to 1.0 g and then down to the 0.5. The program worked very well I dropped 8 pounds in the six weeks but because I maintained all of my muscle plus adding some I was much leaner than any other program I had followed. It definitely takes patience and discipline to go through the six weeks but it was excellent and I’m getting ready to readjust my numbers and do six weeks again.

So I'm 280lbs... by this recommendation, I should be taking 420g protein, 140g Fat, 420g carbs (for fat loss with lower carbs...) = 4600 calories a day... uhhhh???

TommyJohn_ That's only 4600 kcal is a caloric deficit for you. Find the calories you need to eat to lose weight first, and then gram your proteins out followed by your fats and the rest are your carbs. Basic stuff bro!

As a 5 foot 11 male who weighs 165lbs as a lean body mass i would be required to ingest 247 grams of protein a day. This kind of information is what lead me to kidney damage and a few months of tests in the hospital to ensure i wasn't damaging my body. Now since it had been months since all of this i take in 155 grams of protein, 224 grams of carbs, and 65 grams of fat and can successfully cut body fat and still build muscle. When i bulk I will up my fat to around 75 grams and slightly increase my carbs. Info like this is all bull shit and a scam so you buy his stuff. If he cared about the people like me who used to be vulnerable to information he wouldnt give that advice, go watch christian guzman, vitruvian physic, and brandon harding. All of these guys build muscle year round while staying cut and relatively shredded. Thats where everyone needs to get their advice so go check em out

I weigh 245 pounds so..i eat about 350g per day..i just divide the grams by my number of meals and shakes per day. Easy money. If you're eating clean..TRUST ME you will want to eat every couple of hours.

I had been resisting for a while because I felt great having my gym sessions in a fasted state, especially when cutting but now that I'm trying to bulk and I'm enhancing that process, I feel like it would be really silly to be stubborn. My glycogen stores are much larger now, having gone from 10 to 30% carbs but they're just not enough and I do feel like I need a little extra. I'm just concerned about giving up the remainder of what was left of my fasting period, having gone from 16/18 hours to just 12. Adding carbs to my pre workout would cut that to less than 10 and I don't want to lose the lipid and insulin sensitivity benefits that I spent so many months building during my previous phase. Any thoughts?

Rule 7 is still researched upon. Some say no carbs are needed after workout. As long as you’re getting enough carbohydrate in your diet, glycogen levels will return to normal after a day or two, regardless of when that carbohydrate is consumed the speed of post-exercise glycogen synthesis is not important as long as the total carbohydrate need for the day is met.

I think you should learn, keto, carnovore, paleo, intermediate fasting and bodybuilding diet. If you are healthy, do the body building diet and once you understand it, you can switch back to keto because you know how much protein to eat. Even though on keto, you can still take protein powder if needed. Obviously not part of keto, one or two shake won't hurt you lol. If you have bad health issues, then you might need to stick with keto, until health really improves. Health is most important imo

None of these "rules" are backed up by science. Sure, they are not complete nonsense, but still they're overly complicated and simply unnecessary: the human body isn't so fuzzy about meal timings: the only thing that matters is total calorie intake and macro nutrient proportions. The reason why meal timings do not matter is because changes in the human body happen slowly and gradually. The supplements that he conveniently offers you at convenient prices are not needed: they provide some value but not much, and are definitely not necessary. If you want genuinely good body building advice, backed up by hard science, I suggest checking out Picture Fit on KZfaq.

cdl512 yes I'm regurgitating information from real studies; that show that it makes hardly any difference in muscle recovery. I used to take it and then I stopped and I continued to build muscle at the same rate. If you eat enough protein in a day then you get plenty of bcaas to build muscle and you don't need any more, it won't do crap at that point.

Well, having extra sugar in your blood stimulates the release of insulin, which will make your body's cells suck up all that sugar, taking the proteins in with it, meaning you would actually have a faster use of the protein you just ingested after your workout.

I had to stop taking your pre and post workout supplements due to the beta-alanine giving me extreme pins and needles in my hands. Every time i woke up during the night my hands would be having extremely painful pins and needles and I eventually found out it was due to those supplements when I cut them out for a while. Eventually it got worse when I was taking them because during and after my workout for a few hours my hands would be very viable to getting pins and needles easily depending on what i'm doing (such as just using my phone would give them pins and needles). I had no other option but to stop the supplements.

His protocol is extremely complicated especially for someone starting out. I think people should get advice from Layne Norton or Sean Nal...they make things simpler and emphasize adherence to nutrition/training programs that work best for you and your goals.

protein takes multiple "sittings" to digest. when you are eating a high protein meal, your last 2-3 meals are still undigested in your stomach. that is why we eat more protein than we can hold in our bloodstream, because it is slow digesting.
