14th April we Bengalis celebrate Chaitra sankranti (the last day of year) on this day nearly all of the families cook a special food like Pachon or Ammechor daal (typical Bengali food) . 15th April we celebrate the Poila Boishakh. The term 'poila' means first in Bengali. On this day we begin with Ganga snan, though geographically it called Bhagirathi-Hugli river but we Bengalis call it Maa Ganga . Then we go to the nearest temple for Puja , then the whole day of eating. And at night we do "Halkhataa" its a type of social practices where the shopkeepers give Sweets and gifts to their regular customers because it's the beginning of their new business year. In Bangladesh, "poila Boishakh" begins with "Panta bhat and ilish mach vaja". Panta bhat means the left over rice of last night poured in water for whole night and ilish mach vaja means fried Hilsa fish.
