Hi, we are Harriet and Mauro and in February 2021 we bought an abandoned smallholding in Castellón, Spain. In these videos we share our life as we restore and improve our little stone house, learn to grow and preserve our own food, and bring our 4 acres of farmland back to productivity.

When we use to go to my Dad's cabin often, he would put ash from the wood stove in the outhouse. Now we are only there a few times a year and in the summer, so the woodstove is used very little. We have been trying out different kinds of organic matter in the outhouse. I had almost forgotten about the wood ash. I wonder if he also realized it helped with insects. Dad is still with us however his memory is not good. This subject encourages me to write such details down in the journal we keep up there. Thanks for the video, love what you're doing!

It's the techniques, things like the "worm farm" in the bathtub, the compost maintaining higher moisture levels, and how good the local water is that gives the context for living there. You're getting quite a flock of chickens, and the look healthy. Oona does insist on 'helping' you, that hasn't changed. 😆 A rake, bamboo splits or those invasive canes might make spreading gravel and other materials easier on you back, knees. Maintenance work gives us context, understanding of how water systems, etc work.

Si!

I don't speak Spanish but I do know some words and phrases. I'm impressed with your fluency. I've wondered if you already spoke it before you and Mauro met or if you've learned since then. And when you two are off camera do you speak together more in Spanish or in English? I really enjoyed this video, seeing the regular maintenance chores. It's helpful in gaining a better understanding of your day to day life. Thank you so much. And I will echo what others have said about working smart to safeguard your back. I am 66 years old and have worked extremely hard since I was a teenager. I worked on big horse farms (in the US) for many years and pushed my body way too hard. I can still do some hard work but must be very careful and now live with a certain amount of pain. When we're young we don't think about the long term aspect of such things. If I had it to do over again I'd work smarter, do the work that's suitable for my body, and either let the men do the brutally hard work or figure out alternative ways to do it than letting my body bear the strain. With all that said, I greatly admire your work ethic and ability to figure things out and get the job done. Take care!! 🥰

I have been learning Spanish since 2017 when I met Mauro. I studied it hard for a while, now I don't actively study. We have slipped into a habit of speaking English at home lately, a while ago we were mostly Spanish, I dunno what happened... but we are usually speaking Spanish when socialising.
@tomkinsky771

@@LittleSpanishFarmstead Yes, I echo what Meg Lange wrote about caring for your body - even small repetetive actions add up - like for example when you were putting stones in the kitchen cinderblock wall from the outside, or you and Mauro were adding cob to the goat shed interior walls, I kept thinking, why don't they prop the containers higher up on a milk crate or something, to reduce the back and forth they have to keep reaching? Well, just a hopefully helpful suggestion so I hope you don't take it wrong! :) Overall everything is really cool at your farm and it's super interesting to see all the activities that are part of both of your daily lives.
