I was tickled to see "Watercolor - You Can Do It!" in your excellent video. I bought that when Tony taught the first workshop I attended in 2001, along with "Tony Couch's Keys to Successful Painting". He wrote "remember the values" in each and signed them.He did a full sheet demo each morning for us. At 94, he is still teaching.

So, if you live in Europe, I can recommend very much "Centenaire " . It's a good paper from Gerstaecker, Germany. A pad, 30x40 cm, 300 gram with 20 sheets costs about 35 Euro.

Thank you for your encouragement. Just finished 3 days of hideously unsuccessful attempts at a landscape style I adore and just not getting it even one little bit. This video has given me a couple of ideas about things to try. I'm an old Aussie very far and long away from home. Watching and listening to and learning from your videos (and looking at your simply glorious, gorgeous paintings) keeps me trying with "magical" albeit awfully frustrating watercolour.

Wonderful video as usual❤. I started with wood pulp paper. I knew if I spent too much on paper I would be too intimidated to even start. Now I love cotton! I use the pulp variety for studies and stress relief and sheets of practice. I don't worry about sketching lines, color corrections, or writing notes to myself. Who knew that different brands of white show different whites? I love how playful you are during outtakes. If you were a neighbor I'd invite you to tea. Thank you for being you ❤❤❤

I have been practicing watercolour for about 2 years and have just bought my first Arches paper. Up until now (in Australia) I have been using A3 300gsm block Leyton paper from THE ARTIST PAPER CLUB. It is a 100% cotton, it holds the water beautifully and very affordable in both cold and hot press . I will continue to use this paper and keep the Arches for special paintings. Thank you for your tips I have learnt so much and your way of explaining is easy to understand and very helpful. Cheers !!

Also in Australia but had to look up Leyton as haven’t come across it before. Sadly another Chinese product attempting to hide its origins with a western name. Consciously trying to make ethical choices when buying art supplies so definitely no Russian products and, where there are alternatives, no Chinese products. Consequently, I’d no longer suggest W&N Cotman paints for beginners. I’m now buying Roman Szmal, Rósa Gallery and Daniel Smith paints and non Chinese cotton papers.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful information. I am definitely finding out that I don’t need to be using the pulp papers anymore for painting after trying the 100% cotton papers. I am now using Hahnemuhle (German Made) 100% cotton watercolor paper in 140 lb/ 300 gsm that is fairly inexpensive. I also love the Strathmore (USA Made) 500 series 100% cotton papers. I have just recently upgraded my brushes too. Definitely finding that I need to check on not over working my paintings & just let the watercolor do it’s thing. Thanks for all the helpful advice!

I remember you saying that you've had trouble removing sheets from blocks. The only blocks I've ever had trouble with are from Bao Hong: the edges seemed to be gummed the same way you'd glue pages into a paperback book - so gummy & thick. The easiest I've experienced is Saunders Waterford. LOL - the thing that holds me back most is having time to practice! I need to put chores & errands aside & sit down with my paints! Thanks Louise!

1) I'm in Europe and I find that Fabriano artistico 100% paper is 1/3 cheaper than arches or canson heritage (my fav). It's best to buy a full sheet, you can buy them individually in good art stores and online :) and also Fabriano comes in four textures! They have rough, cold pressed, soft pressed and hot pressed. I like the soft pressed one for mixed media!
@loati94
@loati94 Жыл бұрын
In Spain it depends. Fabriano sheets are twice the price of Arches. But then when it comes to full glued blocs fabriano is way cheaper than arches. But if you want a regular 12 sheet bloc Arches is half the price. It's weird lol
@Mmmmagu
@Mmmmagu Жыл бұрын
@@loati94 Oh, that's interesting! In Poland Fabriano is cheaper in every form, but the most economical solution is always buying loose full sheets (50x70cm). Last time I checked a sheet of Fabriano was 24pln, which is around 5euro :D

Hi Louise, thank you for all the work you put into your tutorials, I am a huge fan of your teaching style.
