Do you have any tips for treating or preventing powdery mildew?
@Mantras-and-Mystics
@Mantras-and-Mystics 3 ай бұрын
To kill powdery mildew, mix 250 ml of water, with a few drops VERY mild liquid soap (I use castille soap) and half a teaspoon neem oil. Put in spray bottle, shake well - and you're done! Good preventative too! Note: Make a new preparation every time you want to use it. Also, any mixture you've got left, pour on top of soil around plant. 😊

Just stumbled across your channel and subscribed. Great work! What's your spacing for the cucumbers?
@MindandSoil
@MindandSoil Жыл бұрын
Ah thanks so much! Great Q on spacing! So I'd encourage you to check out our AFrame Trellis video (i'll include a link below). In there you'll see the trellis is about 4' in length. I then plant 4 plants on each side of the trellis for a total of 8 plants. I suppose the spacing ends up being a bit more than 1 per square foot, but that's just because there's a bit of space under the trellis. And believe me, with that AFrame in place 8 plants is well more than enough hahah. Here's the video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nZeDgcSexrS4mJs.html

Ok, I got cucumber plants that were 6 weeks old, and I transplanted them, and they are flowering like crazy... So your saying to pick each flower out until when??? I have also heard not to pick any flowers???? I am confused, and it is my first time growing cucumbers 🥒 😳 🙃 😊 Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us! Love your video 📹 ❤️

I dont remove any flowers here in the UK and I get plenty of outdoor cucumbers. Why not do an experiment... leave the flowers on some and perhaps remove the flowers on others depending on how many plants you have. Good luck.

I have a potted cucumber plant that has 2 cucumbers about 6 inches long, they are prickly, is this too soon to harvest? It’s my first time growing so I’m not sure when to harvest.

Put ground cinnamon into a shaker and shake all over the plant. Also on soil around the plant. It doesn't look great ( you have brownish leaves) but it keeps bugs away. Does not harm the plant at all! Edit: Alternatively, use fine netting and place over the plant. 😊

Loved your Video. I have had a problem with cucumbers, whether planted outside or in my greenhouse, where the stalk at the soil line becomes porous (when examined closely it has become just a few fibres). I have a problem, because all my raised beds are wood, with wood bugs and sowbug. Is this the mail problem or is it something else?

I was curious if you started them ahead just to extend the season or do you find they get a healthier start this way?
@MindandSoil
@MindandSoil Жыл бұрын
A bit of both! It's a much healthier start for them indoors, but then also rather than starting my seeds on say May long weekend (when it's ideal conditions to transplant them or direct sow outside), I've now got cucumber plants that are entering maturity which means the vast majority of their growing days are in those beautiful hot summer days!

Great tips Jord !! But dam, you been climbing I see, and Colleen says your hair is magnificent:)))) Tip 6 !! We'll definitely try this next year !! We've wondered about that with peppers aswell, thoughts ? We got a first flush a offruits but it almost seemed to "stunt" our plants. Not many addition fruit afterwards. Great video Jord We pickle most of ours. Btw check out Lilly Mae cucumbers, I have first hand knowledge of how good and productive they are !! Cheers Brother Jason and Colleen 🌱🌱🌱

haha! I actually haven't gotten out for a single climb this year! Been too busy between M&S and the Flower Farm, and then a bit too tired to have that send energy afterwards. I'm sure I'll be at the gym through the Fall/Winter though! Yeah 100% recommend removing those first flowers. I do the same thing on peppers and am going to do it even more actively on my spaghetti squash next year. I just notice the plant slows so much on the foliage growth for trying to develop that first early fruit. So, going to focus more on a bigger later season harvest moving forward!

@@MindandSoil Thank you. We love pickling cucumbers. In the past I harvested about 100 cukes but not for the last 2 years. It died from bacteria wilt. Growing this year are dragon eggs, Armenian cucumbers, country fair, pickling & Russian brown cucumbers. Last year I wasn't successful with Russian brown cucumbers. Will see this year

I've heard that you get more runner growth by cutting the main stem when it's about 3' long. Is this true, or only true for certain varieties?
@MindandSoil
@MindandSoil Жыл бұрын
Very interesting! I haven't heard that one - but the logic makes sense in some ways to me as it would stop growth from the main stem and redirect it to the suckers. However, there would then also be no new suckers that would develop (opposed to all the new ones that would develop if say the main stem gets to 6'). As I always say, there isn't a right and wrong way to garden but rather just different approaches for different folks - my encouragement would be to run an experiment where you let 2 cucumber plants run without any pruning, and then with 2 other cucumber plants prune them at the 3' mark to see which yields more!
@milkshake3350
@milkshake3350 Жыл бұрын
I think it depends where you live Pierre. Here in the UK we have a shortish hot season for outdoor cucumbers so it pays to pinch out the main stem after 6 or 7 leaves have developed, which in turn will encourage side shoots. It's also a little easier to control the plant too.
@groussac

@@milkshake3350 Thanks for commenting. I probably got the cukes out too early this year (early May, ground temp too cold), but they're beginning to come to life now. Surprise problem this year was the robins. In their search for worms, they took out a lot of my cucumbers, a lot of my flowers, and all of my beans. First time this happened. Iowa Zone 5.

@@groussac Its been a cold May here too. My cukes have just gone out this week which is warm for us at 27degrees. Veg growing is hit and miss wherever you live in the world, if it's not the weather, it's the bugs, if not the bugs the birds. Hey ho you win some you loose some just not to much.... I hope.
