Another great Lily Tomlin starring role is in the movie "All of Me", she is also great in the last 4 seasons of the West Wing. As far as the solo screening it is an interesting way to change things up and keep things coming out while Matthew's work schedule is crazy.

Yes. You'd think 'All of Me' would be a standard reaction video, but it was hard to find on video for decades, and I think it slipped out of the public consciousness. A shame, as I think it's a great melding of Steve Martin's earlier, kooky stuff and his later, more serious stuff. If anyone hasn't seen it, but did like Liar Liar, All of Me has a similar tone.

They are currently in 80 for Brady, the upcoming Moving On and for seven seasons the Netflix series Grace and Frankie (Dolly even had a cameo in the final episode). Another fun fact: The theme song, 9 to 5, was a crossover hit. It went to #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart as well as Country and Adult Contemporary in 1981. The only other time Dolly Parton accomplished that same feat was her duet with Kenny Rogers, Islands in the Stream, two years later in 1983.

At the time this movie came out, all these ideas to improve working conditions were mostly in the realm of an impossible utopia. Things have changed so much since then, that the office at the end is no longer a jaw-dropper. (The tv series Mad Men is a great look at how awful things used to be, like the original office conditions at the beginning of this move.)

After this, Dolly was also in an another all-star female ensemble movie, "Steel Magnolias". She was also in "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" which was based on the Broadway musical. Another interesting piece of trivia is, in the theme song, Dolly simulated the sound of typing on a typewriter by strumming her long acrylic fingernails against each other. There was also a very short lived TV sitcom based on the movie. Some of the same background actors were used (I think the lush and the spy were both in it), but all the leads had to be recast. There was also a Broadway musical based on it, and I think Dolly wrote all the songs for it. Allison Janney (from the TV sitcom "Mom" as well as from the TV drama, "The West Wing") had Lily Tomlin's part in the musical.

Fantastic reaction, oh my gosh, you are a perfect reactor to this movie. Rewatching it with you right now, I can't believe how great Dolly is, how great Dabney Coleman is (a guy I always took for granted in the 80s and now I can see was a genius at playing characters like this. Have you seen "Tootsie"? Early 80s, great comedy, he plays a similar character). Lily Tomlin is fantastic in this. Watching Jane Fonda pretend to have never smoked a joint was as great as watching Dolly partake! I remember this was a big deal when the movie came out, Dolly's film debut. I knew it was a big hit but didn't know it was second to "Empire Strikes Back", that's way cool! But that tracks: I remember it being a hit, the single helped, they were all huge stars at that point, all three. PS: Actually, these issues WERE being talked about during this time, very much so, and Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin were both at the forefront of the woman's movement at that time. "Norma Ray" came out around the same time, with Sally Field. (great movie, you should do that one). PSS: I'd love for you to do "Coal Miner's Daughter" with Sissy Spacek as Loretta Lynn! That was 1981, she won the Oscar, great movie. Also, in 1983, "Terms Of Endearment", with Shirley Maclaine and Debra Winger (and Jack Nicholson), won a ton of Oscars including Best Picture. And Meryl Streep put herself on the map forever with the iconic performance in "Sophie's Choice" the year before. It was a great period for actresses! You should hit all of those classic movies, you'd be a fantastic reactor for all of them.

I totally enjoyed your reactions for 9 to 5 very much. As for Lily Tomlin movies I absolutely Love her in "Grandma"~2015 and "Getting Away with Murder"~1996 to name a couple . If you have Netflix Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin have their own series "Grace & Frankie" and they are brilliant . If I had to rate 9 to 5 an 8.5 does feel like a fair rating . In all 9 to 5 is a great movie and I would not think to take away anything from it but I do understand how one might not see this coming in second in 1980 behind "Empire Strikes Back" . I feel that it gained so much praise in 1980 because although women were still struggling to earn an equal income and this movie showed the struggles.... it also shined when it showed how many different positive changes and promotions in life women did receive . For the 1980's this was an empowerment movie for women . As a very happy subscriber I look forward to many more of your reactions. This was my first time watching just your reactions and I am delighted . Thank you

She also legit wrote the background to the song 9 to 5 with her signature nails. The Candystriper is also Florence Henderson's (Carol Brady) daughter. A couple other movies of hers you might want to watch are: Steel Magnolias from 1989 and Straight Talk from 1992. For Lily Tomlin movies I'd suggest All of Me with Steve Martin, and Big Business with Bette Midler. And for Jane Fonda, the original Fun With Dick and Jane from 1977, and Barefoot in the Park from 1967 with Robert Redford. And if you wanna see Dabny Coleman in another similar role, I suggest Tootsie (seems to be a popular suggestion from the comments too). ~Caroline.

Dabney Coleman made a career playing loathsome buffoons. (Tootsie, War Games, Buffalo Bill - a TV series they could NOT make today!) To his credit, he leaned into it. Both the loathsome AND the buffoon. I think this was the start of the great showbiz team - Jane & Lilly ...through Grace & Frankie right up to that Tom Brady movie. This film may seem dated, yet it's also timeless. It ages well. 😏

Dabny played double roles in a movie called "Cloak and Dagger".. I won't give away the details if you wish to watch it but his roles are nearly opposites (one is a bit stuffy too business like and the other is more adventurous / risk taking) but it does have some emotional bits near the end. This movie had some good costuming (especially the fantasy scenes)... but when it comes to a movie which the outfits match the 'story' nearly perfectly (or as drawn) would be Popeye starring Robin Williams and Shelly Duval (who was Wendy from "The Shining")

I am actual on the hunt for all this kind of style clothing because this fast fashion thing has got me spooked as an older person. How am I expected to wear that crap? I am not a spring chicken. 😆I loved women's office attire from this time. The scarves and collars and broches. Very classy. Very proper. The Kimono is bomb.

As a stylist, I always recommend shopping vintage clothing stores! Not only can you find unique pieces that show off your personality, the quality is often far superior. Maybe start with some accessories. And try to mix some newer items and classic basics with your vintage finds to keep the look from being too costume-y. And always try everything on first as sizing is very different...don't go by what the tag says. I promise, you'll be surprised and delighted how many compliments you get on your unique style!

There's this forgotten gem with Lily Tomlin and Steve Martin called All of Me, where her spirit tries to possess his character. Some of Martin's best physical comedy work to date

Great movie. I recommend the physical copy with the commentary from the three leads laughing right along.

Another thing the scene where the copy machine was going crazy I was afraid of copy machines after that as I got older thinking that was going to happen to me if I used one

Watching your reaction to this movie was what I needed. You might have enjoyed this movie as much as I did when I originally saw it as a little girl in the theater with my mom & aunt.

Apparently when Dolly was singing her proposed theme song to Jane & Lily on set she rubbed her finger nails together in order to get the beat/sound.

Lily Tomlin is fabulous. I recommend two other of her films, The Incredible Shrinking Woman and then Big Business which also stars Bette Midler.

Lilly Tomlin has one hell of a career. Check it out.. including two new films and a series 2015/2023 with Jane. Grace and Franki (the series) and movies Moving On and 80 for Brady. Other great films is All Of Me with Steve Martin in 1984. So much more ... over 65 credits from the 1970s till now.
