Good topic to bring up. "Best by" dates are like new fashion styles -- it's all about getting you to buy something new that you don't really need. In regards to OTC meds, I've talked about this with my pharmaceutical scientist brother and my former chemistry prof. colleague -- both said that expiration dates (different from best by) are established based on testing of the deterioration of the components over time. That 10-year-old aspirin will not have the same efficacy, though it won't be toxic. Regulated meds have dosages based on that efficacy element, so you can't easily just say, it's old, I'll just take more -- that may prove an issue with some drugs as you don't know just how much it has broken down. This reminds me that I need to change out some items in my first-aid kits.

Thank you mate good points. Yes, OTC meds, a doctor once told me, any of these past use by date, are donated to NGO and other orgs for use in third world countries. So good point on first aid items. Thank you for sharing. All the best mate. Be safe and well. 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🦘

Thank You! It has long been my wish that shelf stable foods be labeled with the process / packaged date. Same thing we do with home preserving of foods. Then people would have to rely on time honored methods of determining when food should be discarded. To my knowledge, here in the US, excluding baby foods, there are no regulations on those dates stamped on foodstuff. Processors choose the date (Best By, Sell By, Use By) in accordance with their own reasons for doing so. Legal, profit, inventory turn-over often comes into consideration ahead of factors relating to actual shelf life potential, IMO. The example that I often use is white rice. Properly stored, it has a shelf life of 30+ years. Yet, the date we see when we buy it is about 2 years in the future, at most. I've personally stored it for more than 10 years, in sanitized 2 liter soda bottles, without any problem. Stored in Feb 2010, in Mar 2020 opened a bottle and cooked some to test. Enjoyed my supper. Cooked a big batch and then dehydrated it for "instant" rice. If I had followed the date on the bags when I bought it, I would have tossed that rice around 2012. Yes, over time canned foods, in particular, will lose some nutritional value. Depending on the product, there may be color, texture and flavor changes. *Properly canned and stored, as long as the seal isn't broken, the food is safe to eat.* With the seal intact, nothing can get into the container to cause spoilage. Your container of olive oil is a good example. Unopened, the full tin was not subject to oxygen produced rancidity. The tin, like glass, is not permeable, which is a problem with many plastic containers. Again, thank you for addressing this. Here, far too much food goes to landfills because people consider "Best By" to be an Expiration Date. It's only what it states: The period of time that the processor considered it to be of the best QUALITY. If I'm hungry I'd be thankful for a can of beans with only 85% of the original nutritional value. That 85% will curb my hunger pangs! Here, many, food for the hungry, distribution places will not accept donations of foods that are past the Best By date. Or, they will accept a donation and then quietly dispose of it, without telling the donor. Yet, in this Covid environment we do have people with not enough to eat, through no fault of their own. We also have people on limited budgets trying to keep their pantry stocked. They are taking hard earned dollars off their pantry shelves and putting them in their trash. Only to buy more of the same items, because they've been taught that "Best By" is EXPIRATION. (sigh) Anyone reading this far, thank you for doing so. Please do your own research so you don't discard good food based on assumptions, often promoted, about those dates.

Excellent comment Lee. Have known people to trash food right on use by date. Nothing wrong with it. Grains, as you said, a very good example. We have a variety of food grains out to 15 years in storage. Did a video a while back on oats, sealed and stored, about 10 or so years old. In perfect condition. Yes in these times of covid, panic buying, a lot of food wasted by expirey dates. Have seen it happen here in Australia. At a time when food banks are struggling with demand. Thank you for sharing your experience. Much appreciated. Be safe and well across the pond. 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🦘

G'day, Yay Team ! Sometimes it takes me 10 years to finish a 4-litre Tin, and I usually have a spare one - held against the day it runs out. So, what I have in-use is usually at least 10 years old, if not 15 or perhaps 20. I store the Tins inverted, to prevent Antichinuses from chewing through the Plastic Lid/Telscoping Pouring-Spout, as well as to keep any Ultraviolet Light off the Plastic. If Preserved Food has gone off, it usually smells like rotting Crap - it's not a thing one would miss (!). Have a good one, Stay safe... ;-p Ciao !

I wonder if the metal canned oil stores better than the plastic bottled oil?
@aussysurvival
@aussysurvival 3 жыл бұрын
It's pretty much the storage conditions related to light, and temps. Plastic may become brittle in long term storage. Generally, metal and glass containers are best in dark cool storage. Low humidity, condensation helps with metal containers. Thank you. Be safe and well. 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🦘

G'day, It takes me up to 5 years to use a gallon of olive oil, and I have 2 cans in reserve, so I normally use 10 to 15 year old stuff. I store the Tins upside-down, to prevent Mice or Antichinus from chewing through the Plastic Bungs while waiting for the decade to pass. The Metal Cans, ALL metal Food Cans, are lined with a Plastic Membrane sprayed onto the Sheetmetal before the Cans are cut out and crimped together. No Food or Drink, in any Metal Can, has touched Metal for at least the past 50 years ; as far as I know... "Tins" of Food used to be thin Sheet Steel with Electroplated Tin to seal the Steel from Corrosion - and then they added the Plastic layer. True story mate ! Segue, Backtrack me to my Videos, for, "National Transportation Museum...; Visiting My First Aeroplane !" You should get a good giggle... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

Good information mate. Still, have come across some bare metal inner cans. Generally poor quality as contents corrode the inner can. Not sure if Australia imports cans for the canneries, or the metal to make them. Haven't been able to find any info on this so far. Take care mate. 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🦘

@@aussysurvival Um, well, back in the 1970s they used to make the sheet steel for Canning at Australian Iron and Steel's Foundry at Woolongong...; they took us there for a High School Excursion from Bowral. Did you get to laugh at my old flying Lawnmower ? I'm having a 7 week stint in Coffs Harbour at the now..., getting my head cooked in a Linear Accelerator 5 days a week with Cis-Platin every tuesday. It will go rancid under certain conditions. If it is stored in a cellar with constant temperature it will last a long time. I store all mine in a dark cellar. The only issue is if the metal container rusts. I also have stored some of mine in bottles. So it makes it easier to replenish to the kitchen pantry.
@aussysurvival

Yes good point. Storage conditions are essential to prolong safe shelf life. Metal containers, a big problem with condensation, other sources of moisture. But yes, something I neglected to mention, storage in glass containers is a far better way for storage, in the dark, low light conditions. Very good point. Thank you for sharing your experience.
