I bought this 1981 Mercedes 300D at a Copart Auction for only $90 as a nun runner. Can I get it running again?

What a lucky find, even with the issues, it's definitely worth putting back in proper condition. That's relatively low miles too.

I know this video is a couple years old, but even in 2020 when everything crashed, this was an amazing buy and a super cool car. I'll check the rest of your channel to see if you ever made any more videos of it. The 2nd Mercedes I ever owned was a 1979 300D which I bought in the early '90s for $1500. I ended up driving that for about 3 years before giving it to a friend in need.

I’m so jealous. In Germany a car like this could cost up to 5000€ (~4400$) even when it is not running. If it would run and look like this it can be more that 10,000€. So what a great Price!
@bokosdieselgarage4 жыл бұрын
You can find them for pretty cheap here in the USA although this one was the cheapest I’ve been able to buy. Crazy they sell for that much in Germany. You’d think they have more of them still around than here.

@@bokosdieselgarage It's because in germany they know deep down that these are ultra reliable vehicles that cannot be produced anymore. New cars suck with all their electronic bullshit computers that die and force you to spend another 20 grand for another car every few years. Not good for the environment at all producing another whole car instead of replacing a bit of rubber or a bit of metal in repairs.

That was great. I was so disappointed when it wouldn't start with the key. Then, you found the bypass starter switch.

Think 1 or 2 glowplugs needs to be changed that's why light is on. Adjust the valves and will run much better.happy new year

I haven’t tested the glow plugs yet but it starts pretty quick, especially for winter. Would be nice if that fixes the lights though! I’ll check it out. Happy New Year!

That engine sounded great , like you said Boris it may have sat for along while , I am not sure but that high idle I think is normal on the non turbo to help warm them up I think there is a valve or solenoid that closes to help with that , when you first started it did not idle high until you throttled it from under the hood , keep the videos coming Boris you stole that car the hubcaps are worth more than what you paid lol
@bokosdieselgarage4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, you might be right on that. I’ll have to drive it a bit more to find out. But it seems like the transmission doesn’t want to upshift past 2nd gear so I’ll have to do some work on it first. Might be a vacuum leak.
@alandeamer16154 жыл бұрын
Do an update on this one Boris when you figure it all out , could very well be electrical with the trans looking at the aftermarket gage and other stuff added with push button start , the glow plugs clearly cycled with that kind of voltage drop but you had no light on the dash so there was obviously electrical issues to go to that length with push button start etc , Love the diesel and hot shot videos

I've noticed a lot of 300D Diesels have been bad luck and not really come close to living up to those motors' reputations of bein gable to run forever and ever. I had a 300D Diesel over 20 years ago and had nothing but bad luck with a motor not getting rebuilt just right and the rings only holding up to 95, 000 miles while the bearing s themselves still had minimal wear. It seems to me like the '82-5 Turbodiesels are enjoying a higher survival rate.
@bokosdieselgarage4 жыл бұрын
Well maintenance is really important on these and valve adjustments often get overlooked. But I have heard that they’re really hard to rebuild and the piston rings can wear out. Hopefully you have better luck if you get another one.
@kevinhabener12794 жыл бұрын
@@bokosdieselgarage Thanks for your reply. I'm hitting the thumbs up on it. but I'm not certain I will unless maybe it's an '85 Turbodiesel. But even those are hard to find with over 200K miles on them and still starting right up everytime while still never having been re-built. If it's one with a motor that has been re-built then I don't want it. And that's for the reasons that have been stated here. A high original mileage one, one that has actually lived up to its reputation, is one of my dream cars to add to my car collection and maybe consider having it be an alternate to daily driver. I still can't understand why piston rings can wear out SO prematurely while the rest of the motor doesn't unless it was due to one of the common engineering mistakes when it was re-built last. However, it does prevent me from having too many regrets about choosing a 2004 Jaguar XJ8 to my collection. but now I'm thinking of selling it , too just to make sure no major problems occur with repairs exceeding the car's value, while owning it. That's very much like what happened with my 300D Diesel, the greatness and superb reliability and running everything working good as new were only due to be temporary, or too good to last.
