Talking about working on Stoner Witch with the Melvins got me thinking about what I used live and in the studio during that time. I take a look at some of the cool things I still have and how they were used for recording and also for road work. Be sure to check out Thorpy FX who has Dan Coggins the designer for the legendary Lovetone creations, making wonderful things with them now.

I saw you open for Primus with your massive rig in Dallas. I remember I enjoyed your set more than the headliner I came to see. 😂❤

This is so cool to have you show us your gear. It makes me want to pull out my bass and play, and I just played yesterday. To have Mark D from the Melvins talking about gear is such a treat. :D I'd like to see your bass guitars.

Wow this is yet another amazingly awesome video Mr. Deutrom. Those Lovetone pedals are now about $4,000 - $5,000 worth of gear alone, for anyone who might not realize that.

Thanks ! Those were expensive for the time, but were completely hand built. I believe they had offers from bigger companies but wanted to stay boutique, so there's a limited amount in the world. Thorpy FX has the same DNA as Lovetone...one day they might be collectable also.

Thanks for doing these Melvins videos, Mark. They are incredibly fascinating to me and I enjoy hearing your perspective. You played on my two favorite Melvins albums - Stag and Honky. P.S. hope you'll do a track-by-track analysis of Honky in the near future!

I remember a guitar mag that had an article on the "Buzz Box." To this day, I have still not seen one in the wild, or know of anyone that has one. I'd love to hear it's sound!

@@ScaryGarrySG1 I'm remembering now that I had one and gave it away...seemed to be a combo of the MXR blue box and the DoD Grunge box that I had also. Utterly unpredictable and more like a joke pedal than anything else ! I don't think you missed much...

Yeah I played one in the 90s. Hated it. Trust me. It didn't sound like Buzz or the Melvin's. Just alot of hard to control noise. I ended up buying the Grunge pedal instead.Which sounded much better, but didn't sound very Grungy like Nirvana or Pumpkins etc.It had alot of gain on tap and a active bass and treble tone stack,but not much bass heavy,fuzzy grit. Sounded kinda like a really trebly, extra bright,stacked Rat pedal. Except Rats sound much better,. They are more bass heavy,with that fuzzy grit i love. So I sold it but still have the Rat! Lol.....Buyer beware.

Your playing with the Melvins was 🔥 . I had the same sans amp pedal in the 90s and it was a beast As a photographer I’m also interested in those photographs in the background.

Hey Mark, amazing video! Thanks so much!! Could you talk some more about live sound? You said you used the preamp DI but also had these massive stacks. Do you think the mix of both was important or did FOH do just fine with the DI? I assume cab sim wasnt a thing yet. How did you make drive sounds sound great through DI back then? Sorry, I have so many questions but its really difficult to get quality info on live sound these days. Most people on YT and Co just build bedroom tones.
@MarkDeutrom
@MarkDeutrom 7 ай бұрын
So there was really a combination of things... Signal went first to a Sansamp Bass Driver set to replicate my ampeg preamp setting. DI from Bass Driver went via XLR to FOH mainly as a backup but was probably blended also. The parallel out of the BD went to a couple of FX before the pre. The #1 pre out went to a stereo digital delay set to 10-15 ms and then into a stereo power amp. The other out on the pre went to an additional power amp bridged to mono. I ran the mono cab in the middle of the stereo chain when running 3 cabs and it sounded great. The Bass Driver DI and it's variants have always been great and weigh 300 lbs less ! Thanks for spending time here.

Many thanks for this , Mark. I always loved your bass sound, particularly on 'Stag'. Speaking of which, I've always loved the sort of backwards bass sound you achieved on 'The Bloat'. Was that done using pedals, or was it studio outboard magic?
@MarkDeutrom
@MarkDeutrom Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching ! I definitely got a tone closer to what was in my head on that. Sound City and our excellent engineers helped also ! I'm actually working on the Stag video this week. It's been great to listen again to all those beautiful tones on there. I think that Bloat bass is real backwards reverb with some processing. It's an old school arcane tape machine secret that people like Joe B. know about ! I'll mention that in the video. Thanks for drawing my attention to it !

wow many thx for all the info's ... the RM Voodoo Bass is a magic piece... Sans Amp for sure ... but Meat Box ? now i'll have a question... remember Alive at the F*cker Club -> Boris ... that Bass sound was awesome ❤‍🔥🤘🏻... did you use the Meat Box for this deep bass effect? ... and to be honest... you're my fav Melvins Bass player... you gave them the right push together with dale ... also the older songs sounded much better... Owen, Boris ... you name it ;-) saw you many times live in germany and netherland... filmed also a few concerts...

Thanks for that. Possible it could have been Meat Box, but I believe the Boss Bass Synth Box also had a sub octave feature. Always loved playing in Germany + NL. Hope to get back there one day !

Thoughts about the FOUR cab setup, did you use any ear protection, how much, if any, hearing damage have you accrued? I would assume that some of the "worst" shows may also be viewed as Best Shows, as poor crowd reception opened the door to get the goodies out and make a racket as you say.
@MarkDeutrom
@MarkDeutrom Жыл бұрын
My biggest fears on tour were running out of aspirin and losing my earplugs. Thankfully my ears are excellent from looking after them. Dale's cymbals were deadly without ear protection. Poor crowd reaction was just that...it wasn't a good time and actually dangerous at points.
@melvins1
@melvins1 Жыл бұрын
I made it to one of the KISS gigs, at The Mark in Moline. The crowd reaction was mostly indifference. I can't imagine the mental fortitude it would take to go on stage during some of those arena runs with white zombie, nin, etc. when you run into that kind of threat possibility repeatedly. You're a wide open target, can't see a thing, and so completely overwhelmed by a mass of angry, drunken miscreants. Wasn't it the Dallas track on the singles collection where you were hit by torn up flooring? The ice show? Puts a lump in my throat just imagining that. I would absolutely be hiding behind the Ampegs. Glad you made it as well as you did.

@@melvins1 All those Kiss shows we played were awesome, and they were all very nice people, it's great you got to see one of them. The first one was at the Superdome !! Dale looked paralyzed and he could hardly start playing when we got on the stage. 90's audiences were weirdly aggressive at points. They were ANGRY about something...the Dallas thing was rough. I've never seen an entire crew look scared, and yes, I did get hit by a piece of flooring....how did you know that ??? I had a 6 inch bruise on my chest for about a month. People were throwing batteries, 50 cent pieces, pens, all pretty bad stuff to get hit with...and the floor. I might talk about the White Zombie thing at some point...I have more to add that hasn't been heard...mainly just disappointing and wretched behavior from so-called "adults"...it's just funny at this point.... Helmet's audience was also dreadful in many situations, however no one died, and all of this is relatively minor in the scheme of things.
