Hey guys! Here’s a tutorial showing a side by side of traditional 90’s grunge makeup next to its baby sister, the “grungy” makeup we’ve all become familiar with in recent years. I hope you like it!

▸ UNDERTONE - My undertone is neutral leaning yellow. I have a hard time finding a perfect match because my undertone is a bit more gray. However, I’ve found that purchasing yellow-toned foundation is workable, whereas if I purchased a pink-toned foundation, it’s very obviously too pink for my skin tone.

You nailed it! This is a true grunge look. I was a teen in the 90's, when monotone, matte, smoky brown, black, or taupe washes on the eye were all the rage. Everyone used brown or black pencil liner on the water line, and either deep reds, browns, and taupe-nudes on the lips (often with lipliner that was way darker than the lipstick!). Sometimes there was a bit of frosty highlight under the outer half of the eyebrows. We didn't do highlighter on the cheeks, we did glitter!

Smacy - Oh wow! Wasn’t expecting a response. Thanks for that! It’s just refreshing. I wasn’t trying to be melodramatic, I just find all I can do is roll my eyes or chuckle a bit when I see people use that term as they sweep on some eyeshadow. When you’ve been to the scummiest depths of addiction and have seen the ugly truth it’s hard to relate to those people. I recently unfollowed a ton of the “bigger” beauty channels because I found myself so irked by their falseness. As a lover of makeup and art alike, I find it really refreshing and entertaining that there are so many smaller creators now that are authentic- like you! I enjoy your content, attitude, humor, and personality. This was a great video. Keep up the good work! 👌🏻
@Smacy

Thank you, I'm so happy you like my channel! You weren't being melodramatic, it's total bullshit that people say things like 'heroin chic' when they have absolutely no clue what they're talking about. Opiate abuse shouldn't be glamorized or exploited. And I know what you mean about the bigger channels. I think many of them have become 'personalities' over the years. Like their popular personality quirks that were at one point, authentic, have been exaggerated more and more to the point that those particular traits dominate their demeanor in their videos. I've been really loving a lot of smaller channels lately, bc since I became one myself, they actually pop up in my recommended a lot more frequently! And hey thanks again for your support!!

I'm a recovering h addict also but definately found that heroin _was_ chic in the early/mid 90's... it was a big problem but we had role models that were leading that look without really meaning to, they were just addicted & it showed & for some warped reason media decided to glamorise it. I think the thing is, we had that look cos we didn't care that much about how we looked. I know I for one, might slap on some makeup one day & not bother cleaning it off for days really, back then. When your off your guts or chasing, those things didn't matter. All we can do is move forward, stay clean & take the positives out of the very dark period of the times & our lives. Well done on your recovery, may it be strong & inspiring forevermore :} xoxo

I love the authentic side. It makes me kind of nostalgic. Full coverage, contouring, and the "winged" shape on the eyes are very much hallmarks of today's look. I'll be interested to see how they'll be interpreted in light of whatever's trendy twenty years or so down the line.
@BlackThorndRose

I don’t think the current “grunge” trend refers to 90s grunge, it’s more of a style that people haven’t come up with a better name for. But as someone who lived the 90s, there was no grooming of the brows, thin or not. Skin was all about being matte and flat, not so much about the coverage and very rarely saw blush. Smudged dark shadow and black liner on top and in the waterline was a must. Lastly, a darker brown/berry was way more common because red wasn’t (and isn’t) flattering on everyone, and was more of an iconic shade for a select few.🤷🏼‍♀️

You're right, i don't recall even seeing particularly warm toned eyeshadows in the early 90's. It was mostly neutral/cool toned neutral browns, blues, purples & greys/black. We mostly bought quads too, not the big palettes that are everywhere now. I kinda miss the simplicity of makeup then, even though at 44 I'm going through a huge revival of my love for makeup, now my kids are older & I have more time to do these things like put makeup on in the mornings :}

I was 5 to 14 on the 90s, and I remember that makeup I general was much more natural. Teenagers rarely used foundation or did it only under the eyes (unless bad cases of acne). I was on the other end of the spectrum: liked pop and dance music, used neon eyeshadow (with a frosty touch on the browbone), very subtle eyeliner and pink lips, and instead of having the hair on my face I used butterfly clips to keep it out of it!

This. The current trendy ‘grunge’ look to me echoes the post punk dark-wave look & 80s/90s goth scene. Boots before corset! But, I remember that people heading off to their first career jobs back then (my older sibling’s age group) were all about ‘spice’ lip liners, brown reds and browned down pinks for lipstick and taupe eyeshadow. Late 90s there was this gloss people went nuts for. Something “voodoo.” IDK Very glossy and a brown plum. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I will say that the old school side really needed some liner. It was like the thing - if you didn't do anything else, you had on black liner and you smudged the ever loving crap out of it. It was used almost like an eyeshadow stick by lining your upper last line and smudging it with a taupe/brown/grey color then your waterline and same on the bottom. All that said, your interps are great! That funky brick cranberry shade that was smudgy and smokey and vampy... And yes maam! The old school is deffo better than new school except I'm living for your highlight!!! GREAT vid! ♥

The 90's one reminds me so much of Winona Ryder's makeup that she had during that decade. I think the 90's one is more wearable that the modern, and it's the one I prefer. The modern one seems too much for me.

This video was really good, and even a bit educational in a sense! It was very interesting seeing the real thing versus the modern interpretation side-by-side. I feel like it's important for people realize that so many makeup trends we do nowadays are just that- trends. Instead a lot of trends are being treated as "must haves" for the face.

I was in my 20's in the 90's, and you got it right. I would have switched the lipsticks as dark, vampy, matte lipstick was all the rage. I wore very light colored foundation or powder foundation (I had oily skin back then) and almost-black nails as in Vamp, the Chanel color from Pulp Fiction, 1993. Red eyeshadow was completely unheard of. Your Cranberries makeup tutorial is pretty accurate too. To complete the re-creation of the 90's, wear Thierry Mugler "Angel" perfume (I f-ing hate that scent to this day), and I would swear I was watching an Alanis Morissette video.
@Smacy

Ahahaha I hate that Angel perfume too! 😂My cousins were in their 20's in the 90's and I remember them all wearing the dark, brownish vampy lip. I was going more for Kim Gordon, Courtney Love, Kat Bjelland, etc. here but omg I just love that the 90's trends are coming back around since I didn't really get into makeup as an adolescent! I was a stubborn tomboy who "didn't need makeup." 🙄

Yeah I don’t think there was one specific style of “grunge” makeup so when you think of 90’s grunge makeup, you really think of the version that’s currently trending. No one called it ‘grunge makeup’ back then. The original ladies of grunge all had their own style. Courtney Love did the sleepy eye, Shirley Manson did the bright red lip and messy eyeliner, and like Dolores O’Riordan had a more smoky raccoon eye and no lipstick. I actually think I’m gonna a tutorial for that, I’ve been wanting to do a tribute to her! ❤️

And of course I still Love all love that make up and all of that music. We did any kind of eyeliner color you can think of and most any color lipstick you can think of really. It was all cool. Whatever you were feeling was what it was about. And don’t forget smashing pumpkins and green day. Great job! I kind of went from grunge and into the Grateful Dead from there. LOL grunge to hippie. We didn't put on eye shadow with a brush. Used the wedge shaped sponge that came with it. You used your fingers or a Q Tip to smudge it out to the top and corners. I rarely wore foundation. Usually covered spots with tinted Clearasil and left the rest alone. No primers or crap like that. Probably slapped moisturizer on before. I would say the eyeliner is a bit thin. We put it on a lot thicker and we usually smudged it and used that as the base for any eye shadow. The fun thing about that is if you get the eyeliner to smudge enough, you don't have to bother with eye shadow.

I'm pretty sure somewhere I still have my pallet from the 90s. Here in the South we did not do glitter till after the the year 2000. Even this was still taking a little bit more time than we usually did to put makeup on. We were all about the Browns. It's interesting at looking at this tutorial how the colors on the eyes and lips have swapped we had Brown eyes and red lips in the 90s and the Revival has red eyes and brown lips it looks like. Great tutorial you look very authentic. I like the more natural look back then we weren't striving for in an intense amount of perfection in our makeup like these days. I guess I blame social media we had to just take pictures with Polaroids or little cameras that hid any of our flaws. these days everyone has an Instagram account and needs to look perfect.

Lol so many things that weren't a thing then. I'm 37 and there wasn't as much shit then. Plus foundations weren't in great shades either. I remember wearing mostly black eyeshadow which always creased and faded, and for some reason I think revlon or l'oreal had a purple-ish lipstick 'raisin' color I wore the shit out of, don't know if they even make anymore. Makes you think how much makeup we buy now vs then...😞

I agree with you so much! Eyeshadow was terrible quality and you couldn’t get it to stick to your skin hardly, and by the end of the day it was mostly gone. Foundation choices were crap so either you wore a shade that was too light and made you look like a floating ghost head, or you had an orange line at hour jawline. I owned raisin for many years and I do believe they still make it! It’s a classic color.

Your interpretation of the 90's look was accurate. I was one of the few people that didn't have super thin brows in the 90s. I did alnost nothing to them. I used on medium brown color for the lid and that was it. I didnt know highlighter existed. The only shimmer I knew was the 80's frosted blush and that was not the look I was after! Its almost as if the modern take on grunge is modeled after Francis Bean. And the classic look is that of her mom.

Awesome video! I wish more people were clear in the fact that our current interpretation of 90s grunge is in fact just an interpretation and not quite accurate. It draws inspiration from the actual color scheme but the makeup techniques were so much different. While I certainly LOVE the more modern red-eye/brown-lip combo and do it often nowadays, that's not at all what I was doing in the 90's. In the 90s I was obsessed with the Sleater Kinney look, with those more understated, neutral eyes, if any eye-look even happened at all. I love how you even got the blush placement down so well.
