I must admit that this is unlikely to be the most exciting boxing tips video that you watch today.
However, it could be the most important boxing tips video that you watch today.
For anyone who is a member of my Boxing Training Foundation you will know that I am fanatical it comes to effective breathing.
Effective breathing results in maximised oxygenation of the muscles which in turns leads to the best possible chance of remaining fight effective.
Keeping it simple, I find it helpful to put breathing into 3 categories:
Breathing during the round
Breathing when punching
Breathing during the rest period.
Breathing During the Round
When you are tired, or even when the excitement of 'the fight' hits you, you can get the urge to breath shallow. Basically you pant like a dog.
Shallow breathing is the least effective way to oxygenate.
Whenever you disengage and move to the edge of range or out of range, take the opportunity to take in a couple of deep, controlled breaths. Breathe in through the nose then out through the mouth.
Same when the referee shouts 'Stop Boxing'. Move out of range (with your guard high) and take some deep breaths before you re-engage with the fight.
Breathing When Punching
Generally you exhale when you punch, often in the same way that tennis players exhale when they hit a ball.
Boxers often make different sounds, ranging from 'Hzz-Hzz' to 'arghh arghh' :-)
When throwing fast combinations this can alter for obvious reasons - you don't want to hyper-ventilate.
A word of warning though - don't get too loud!
I have witnessed referees issuing warnings when boxers are excessively loud, so don't get carried away!
Breathing During the Rest Period
Deep, controlled breathing during the rest period is absolutely crucial.
In boxing being tired is a fact of life.
Even when working the heavy bag you need to work to the maximum rate and therefore you will tire.
The key is that during your rest period you oxygenate and get your heart rate back down.
Controlled breathing is at the heart of remaining fight effective.
As I said, not the most exciting of the boxing tips video series but certainly one of the most important of the boxing tips videos.
Comments or questions below please.
Cheers
Fran

thanks for these quick videos, I just can't watch another "tip" video that takes 15 minutes to describe a punch that takes a fraction of a second, maybe its just me but I don't need to know the history of the punch or anything, your 90 second (or so) videos are just right!

Time Delta. Use them on the heavy bag for a few sessions, but not permanently. Sparring gloves are for sparring and so good padding is key for protection of you and your sparring partner

Right now this is my biggest problem and it's SO frustrating esp now as COVID cut my rate by around 20% :( Holding my breath or yeah, panting, getting gassed very quickly and so damn frustrating. Fast reflexes and strength mean *nothing* as they're useless to me in large part to this bad habit. I'm going into the club today to work primarily on my breathing but damn do I feel stupid. 😂😂

Any thoughts on how hard to exhale when throwing a punch? I know people say to contract the abdominal muscles and force the are out in tight "TSSS" kind of sound. Doing a valsalva maneuver. But For me this is uniquely tiring and feels like I'm almost forcing myself to be out of breath. And I'm a fit guy, so I don't think isn't a simple endurance issue.

One of my classmates told me I left my jab out for too long and another has told me to keep my hands higher and closer to my face, and so far I have gotten punched less in the face. One problem I am having tho is when I throw my jab, my right hand pulls backwards, how can I fix this? Am I trying to reach too much with my jab? Also what are some tips on keeping my eyes on the opponent? My coach says I keep moving my head around during punches and that I should keep it on my opponent.

breathing while blocking/ absorbing shots? exhale or inhale?
@myboxingcoach
@myboxingcoach 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting question. Thinking about it blocking body shots I would momentarily hold my breath, but that might have just have been me. Blocks with the hands I would guess as neutral in terms of breathing. Good question though.
@irishrepub84
@irishrepub84 7 жыл бұрын
thanks. i figured it was something closest to holding but wasnt sure. especially if youre kind of blocking in combination. parry the jab, high guard block the right straight or hook even and then high guard the lead hook. say against the ropes or whatever. and you need to breathe during the flurry/ combination until you can circle off. breathe with the shots like with your offense or between shots?
@myboxingcoach
@myboxingcoach 7 жыл бұрын
Don't think too much about about those intense moments, think about your punching and getting off the ropes. AS you say when you circle off get a couple of good breaths then go on the attack again.
@seung-hyuncha1439
@seung-hyuncha1439 7 жыл бұрын
exhale would be better then inhaling (could get winded) or holding your breathe (gets you gassed) of course you should control how much you exhale so that you have enough gas, to evade and move out or block and parry more combinations coming in.

The more regular and relaxed your breathing is, the more relaxed you will be, however, once you're in the ring and trading punches, your body should go on autopilot. Let it.

@myboxingcoach

Not necessarily Donald, it's a physical reaction when throwing a punch. I never coach a boxer to make a noise, they kind of develop that habit. Not a problem unless it is excessively loud, a referee in the amateur code can sometimes issue a warning for excessive noise.

Not really Donald. Think about the round of boxing in it's entirety. If you don't breathe out when you are punch then you may hold your breath. The former is better than the latter.
