A powerful record of the Eameses' famed design space at 901 Washington Blvd. in Venice, CA. It was here that the groundbreaking design team developed furniture, made films, created architecture, produced exhibitions and much more - work that continues to shape our world and the way we see it. The film also chronicles the process of closing the workshop of 45 years.
As the musical tower developed by Charles and Ray plays its cascade of music, the camera roams, using the office itself as a prism through which viewers can observe their lives and their work. The film offers viewers a last chance to visit the shop and celebrate its joyous texture and aesthetic. 901 is a wonderful complement to the Eames films and a whirlwind introduction to the Eames legacy. In 1988 I was working as a photographer's assistant with Tom Bonner when he was hired to shoot stills of the studio at the time this film was made. Tom mentioned they were shooting a documentary recording the event. I remember the diagram on the wall in the lunch room that I believe appears at 16:32 and I've always wanted to find a copy of that diagram. I recall it appeared to be Charles Eames's design philosophy in one diagram. The sheet was about 11" x 14". The other part I remember was being in the conference / projector room and seeing one of the movie cameras that was set up to do a time lapse of us working in the room taking photographs. The little red light would go off when each frame was shot. When Tom went to get lunch, I mischievously animated the chairs in the conference room. I would wait for the camera to fire, go in and turn a chair slightly, step back out of the frame, wait for the next frame to go, then go back in and do it again. I'm quite disappointed to see that Eames Demitrios chose not to use the sequence in the time lapse section of the documentary. I thought it was rather creative and fit the character of the space. I've always wondered what Demitrios thought when he got the film back and took a look at it.

...was in Venice this past weekend... 901 still proudly stands - but the city really should designate it as a historic site & refurbish it as an Eames museum of sorts. But that'll probably never happen... Venice only cares about high-end commercial development anymore -- so this film's an archival treasure for sure! As I snapped-off a few exterior shots...one guy passed by saying, "I'm glad someone still appreciates what that place was about." ...lots of us do.

It would have been wonderful to have it just left as it was, with tours to see where the magic happened.

The narration and cinematography style in general is very similar to that of Van Neistat’s movies for Tom Sachs’ studio. Funny that they were also similar in age and location, both being early 2000’s and in America.

could not stand that music for 7 mins. had to fast forward. Thats cool they had that noise maker in their office, but jesus that was painful to listen to for so long.
