Heaps of miles to go on that youngster. My current DR has 317,000 klms on it so far, sadly had to pull it apart at 260,000 klms to replace the gearbox output shaft as the splines were badly gouged out by the front sprocket, also replaced the rings and she is good as gold, it is a 2014. My dear old 2005 has 495,000 klms and still runs perfect, it has been rebuilt a couple of times, even blew up the gearbox at 199,000 klms, just replaced the cases and threw in a second hand gearbox. The DR is such a simple bike that rebuilds are cheap to do, I can pull the engine out, rebuild it and have it going again in a weekend.

A true motorcyclist. He knows his DR back to front. I love my '08 with 129k KMs (80k miles) on it. Still pulls like a train and doesn't burn a drop of oil.

Very impressive I got a 2013 I paid $3,000 for it she has 5,000 Miles when I bought her she now has 6500 I've had her for 3 years I'm handicapped to I'm missing my right leg I'll be keeping mine till the day I can't ride anymore

This video made my heart sing. Just wrapped up a 5,800 mile tour of the western US on my 2022. She's lean, rugged, and willing to go anywhere - I wouldn't have it any other way.

Awesome!! On my 3rd DR...not because the 1st 2 wore out...more because I thought there was a better unicorn. Keep coming back to the DR and here to stay now. They really are fun to ride and so, so versatile. Suzuki knows about this bike that if it isn't broke don't fix it. The ease of maintenance and ease of working on this bike coupled with the HUGE parts availability make it a complete No Brainer long term keeper bike. Good for the Mad Max era coming...haha

My first DR650 was a brand new '05 model. I put about 24k miles on it before I sold it in '15. Now I have a '21 model that I got new, I missed the other one so much.

Great to hear from a bloke with such knowledge and miles on the DR650. Mines at 50,000 kilometers (30,000 miles?) and runs like a clock. Great machines, it's a shame they don;t import them into Australia anymore 😪

My Brother is buying a ‘22 V-Strom 650 and last weekend I looked at and sat on a DR650 at Suzuki in Dallas. If my ‘21 T7 were paid for I would’ve bought that DR!

Great bikes! Got my '12 with 750 miles on it. Now has 21k. Lots of mods, even a spare wheel set with an 18" rear. Good torque, low maintenance, easy valve adjustments and lots of aftermarket bits. Like the man said, they're a great balance of road/off road capable.

I met clay at a swap at the mn fairgrounds last summer while on my dr650. he greeted me enthusiastically. I have the procycle foam and cover and today I have determined that my dr is as comfy as my 2002 1150gs with a low cut bill meyer saddle at 60 mph. clay told me he ran a dr all over the nation and this film is pretty cool. Clay, do a follow up after you feel your bike is fully broken in. thanks and keep the shiny side up!

If you follow the wires from the left clutch housing to the wiring harness in the headlight shell,unplug the male and female connectors plug the male and female leads from the wiring harness together ,you delete the switch to pull the clutch to start feature, I also followed the two wires from the kickstand kill switch up towards the battery ,solder the two wires together and heat shrink the connection you delete the kickstand down kill switch , I removed mine and threw it away ,and cut off the mounting tab.....😊,excellent vidio,ride on !

My dog and I rode 34,000 miles in 2023 and hope match that this year. Way overloaded and it still goes anywhere and takes on any environment with trouble free reliability

You can bypass the clutch safety feature. Just move a few wires around. There's video's that show how it's done. Super easy. I have a 2013 and I love it.

Great bike. It was always my favourite 650 trailie. Never owned one. I had an XT500E in the '80s. Early '90s when I lived in Japan, the baby DR: DR250SH. Great bike for zipping around Tokyo.

Love mine (2009, 7K miles), so far. It's a cream puff, that's never been off road, but I plan to change that. Installed multiple accessories (Tusk cases, skid plate, Seat Concepts seat, digital display screen, etc), anxious for the first good trip.

I had an 09. I sunk about 2k in mods to it. But, I put over 55,000 miles on it. I switched to a KTM 690 in 2016. I really miss the character of my DR. I rode it hard on and off road. It’s like a cockroach. I tried but couldn’t kill it.

I had a 96 and now own a 2016. I replaced the stock seat with the Suzuki comfort seat and threw away the Trailwing on the 2016 after touring back roads of Colorado and New Mexico when it was brand new. This rider possibly knows Fritz out in Gunnison. He has a little bike shop out there and I often stop by for parts, etc.. He's an old ISDE rider and is from Wisconsin and was once a neighbor of the Dungey's and rode with them often. Great guy with some amazing stories that are actually true. 😂

I am not familiar with Motul 7100 but I like hearing those details. I just got a used 2018 DR200S I may switch from ECSTAR R5000 to Motul now after seeing this! Awesome thumper, I love simple & basic! In my cars I had great luck with Mobil-1 always did over 250k though I did mostly highway miles.

There’s a bypass for the clutch and stand switch. The previous owner did it to mine so that all you have to do is turn the key and push start to go.

I mean it looks dusty, I wouldn't call it "haggard" and for a bike with nearly 100K miles, I think it looks amazing.

I hope my DRZ400 will be just as reliable.

Very cool. I ride a DR200 in town. It's fun, but sometimes a little too slow. It's the right tool for the job though. I've been looking at the 650 as an upgrade.

That's been my ambition since 2008 and the odometer now has me hopeful. I range between Canada and Monterey Bay, California, using I-5 when not in public- use forest areas. I locate caves and explore those not man-made. Recommend Modoc National Forest if you go in with GPS to get out alive

As it's in the 30 degree range my DL650 sits covered waiting for a ride to work tomorrow . Still just broke in at 67,000 ,5 sets of chains , sprockets a few less sets of tires and that 3rd (4th?) clutch cable is about to snap I wonder should I get a used DR next? Maybe but as a Minneapolis guy , think Ill take my spare clutch cable with tomorrow! and think about it I do like the DR and at my age it is top of the list!

Got a DR five years ago and never looked back. Will only switch if someone makes a modern 400 dual sport. I imagine its coming soon from ktm with their new stroked 390 motor.

note that the ride hight is adjustable on this bike. stock is 34 inches high. but you can go lower. I was born with mild cerebral palsy So I needed a low sitting ride hight to throw may leg over and balance the bike on may right.

Love mine. Trying to figure out why it stalls and sputters after I get gas.

I get that you didn't fret about the NSU, but if you fixed the oil pump sprocket, it was right there!

Pretty cool. I rode an XL 600 from 1985 and I like that better than the XR 650 L because it was kind of like he said in between it set a little lower and was a little more street friendly but still capable off-road and these air cooled bumpers just go forever. I’m also a fan of the DR 350 SE. I like the 350s in the six speed a little better for the way I ride and they had the electric start. That would be my dream bike over 1984 Honda XL 350 with an electric starter in the rear disc brake and the DR 350 was a quirky bike and had some issues but nothing it wasn’t fixable and they had that and I still look for them about once a week and have considered buying a couple. If I’m going to buy new I’m still gonna buy the DR 650 probably because you can flip the suspension and lower it a little and I don’t drive hard-core off-road so I’m not really all that concerned about the clearance I’d like to drop it a couple inches. But these Yamaha XT three 5600s the XL‘s, did you just great bikes and they go forever the maintenance is very easy to do change your oil you replace your consumables keep your filter clean and adjust your valves every few thousand miles and you’re good. I’ve driven an XL 600 with nearly 50,000 miles on it I’ve seen an XL 600 with 140,000 miles on it and this the Cal are the XR and XL and the XTs were just great bikes they were built tough and they had good enough performance to be viable. They’re just awesome bikes and they’ll go forever if you take care of them. 90,000 miles is pretty crazy, pretty awesome 👏🏼👏🏼🙌🏼

Those are great budget bikes , ive replaced a few base gaskets in the older ones but I see very little problems with them. That sed now that I've ridden the ktm 690s I probably couldn't go back.

I'm curious what the guts look like with 5k mile oil changes. Suzuki spec'd 3k oil changes and I wonder if the motul was enough to keep the oil from getting cooked with such long intervals. I've got a '00 and '02 with 28k and 38k respectively. The '00 made it to 25k before I pulled it down for a base gasket leak and ended up getting overhauled when I found damage from a prior owner. The '02 is going strong at 38k but it needs rings, she's burning oil now. I'd be right there next to him ridin' to California; just would need a tire swap first.

Did you have any trouble with the carburetor when riding thru the Rockies! I live in Colorado, I plan on riding in both the mountains and Utah deserts doing a lot of off-road. I’d be anywhere from 4000 to 12,500 ft and am wondering if I need to avoid a carbureted bike or not? Just curious if you ran into any carburetor issues in the mountains?
