Neil spends a lot of time crafting dramatic sound bites working on his vocal delivery, hand gestures and wardrobe. Unfortunately that doesn't leave him time to do research or open a textbook. The result is a lot of wrong math, science and history. The man makes zero effort to research his material to get it right. It is a stretch to call Neil an astrophysicist.

That 1st story Dr Tyson told, about the snowball fight and knife, was so profound and really hit me. Dr Tyson and I were born in the same year. The story he told showed me how different our mindset was at that critical age of 17. It was at 17 that I made a couple very important decisions that effected my life, my "fiancé" at the times life, and my family. All I cared about was sports and music and my lady. I was just never taught. I had basically been on my own since 12. Dr Tyson is a brilliant man and I truly admire his accomplishments.

Luuuv Tyson, who doesn’t? The more i learn about this guy, the more amazing he is. I have my own personal version of the teenage bully story & it begins with Abe Lincoln. Nobody could claim HE wasn’t big, strong & nerdy enough to take on just about anything planet Earth could throw at him. When asked “how talk should a man be?”, he said “tall enough for his feet to reach the ground.” Well wouldn’t you know, me, with a father that was 6 feet tall & grandfather on my mother’s side that was 5’11” & his son the same; barrel chested farmers, built like Arnold Schwarzenegger, i never got past 5’8”. And skinny. Never let it be said that God hasn’t a wry sense of humor. Well, from grade school through first year of college, there wasn’t some school bully who couldn’t get enough of teasing & whacking the classroom shrimp. After entirely too many years of this, i was FED UP! So, this big-bulk guy, with an attitude, just leaned his left arm onto my desk-chair. You know those school chairs with a little table growing out of the right arm of the chair? He did that to my little piece of TERRITORY! Like i was NOTHING, as he casually whispered to his friend at his right, during the lecture. We’re sitting in the back row of the small college classroom in the Deep American Southland, approximately 1968. Wells, i saw red. And my grandpa had just taught me how to shoot varmints, including the human kind. So i said to Mr Bully.,“Do you still settle differences with your fists?” The big guy said, “Yea.” Skinny little me said, “Well, I don’t. I’ll just KILL you.” This was the Old South. Civil War. Shootin’ irons. Hatfield & McCoys. Never ends until one clan or the other gets wiped out. He knew what i meant. Took his arm off my table. After that, nobody messed with me any more. And was polite. In America, you don’t need an army, clan or be bigger & meaner than the other guy. You just have to be big enough to pull the trigger. Now by nature, i’m a peaceable guy. I actually LIKE people; empathic by nature. Breaks my heart what the rich & powerful did to our vast middle class of the 1950s & ‘60s. Good union jobs. A middle class Teamster lived as good as a young lawyer. Three bedroom house, two cars, in the suburbs with two kids. Now, by freezing wages since the ‘70s. And “Only poor people pay taxes.” With THAT attitude, now almost EVERYONE’S poor. Things are getting worse. Nobody trusts ANYBODY anymore! It’s all about money. Manipulated money. Increasingly worth nothing. Banks failing. Weimar Germany all over again. Con artists rule the country. They HATE democracy! An informed, science & technology loving world; ready, willing & able to defend EVERyYBODY’s God-given, inalienable rights! See what happens when we DON’T? No, I don’t mind a bit China finally caught a break & most of WASP America finally realizes you don’t think with your skin & your brain doesn’t get sunburned. People of color can do science also. Given a level playing field, there isn’t ANYTHING a united mankind can’t do that’s doable & worth doing! Colonize other worlds, cure cancer; we’re better together! With genetic engineering, even fix STUPID! We’ve even taught silicon & germanium crystals & tungsten how to think, walk around, do backflips; do our boring, dirty work for us. Ready to explore the cold, radioactive void of outer space, build infrastructure on the Moon & Mars; even before we get there! They never get mad. They’ll grow our food, wont cut you off in traffic … Let every man, woman & child be ALL they can be; without bullying, enslaving or killing ANYBODY! Won’t even need guns, knives or clubs to defend our rights; knowing God IS the multiverse; Cosmos. Convergent evolution is His Invisible Hand. Living worlds, erring ever less erringly towards infinite perfection; God by definition. The Ultimate Ideal evermore real. The power & the glory of immortal energy, manifested in us, throughout all cycles of universal death & rebirth. However improbable. Infinite possibilities. Just remember, the only thing holding us back from this glorious future is a bullied child, robbed of his future… Who could have been your friend.

Neil and Gayle are two of my favorite people. The last thing Neil spoke in this discussion was profound and led to my searching Horace Mann. i’m a couple of years older than Neil and somehow I’ve gone these many years never knowing who Horace Mann was. Wow! Now I can’t get enough of information about Horace Mann, who he was, what he did, and his impact on the world I live in today. Thanks, folks, for Sharing this discussion on KZfaq and enlightening me about Horace Mann.
