Recently the neighbor kid saw my KZfaq video and was shocked that I was living right next-door. He thinks I’m some kind of celebrity. So I’m ranked number one in the eight-year-old neighbor demo.

@Nope Nope With podcasting an a studio build for under $900 (Rodecaster Pro, Rode Mic NT-1A, MegaSeg or other DJ software, you can start streaming. You'll need Buzzsprout.com and Spotify.com for music. I am in the process of creating a video that will be a little more helpful. But, there are already KZfaq videos like that. Just like what Radio.co offers.

I DJ twice a week at a local elementary school in Okinawa Japan but I'm nothing like that. Unfortunately the children and staff don't understand what I say but they love the ambience of a radio station. Cool stuff! Thanks for your video! Absolutely love it!!!

Best of luck. Enjoy the ride and remember the key to to speak to "one person" not an audience. Understand who the listeners are as a group, then target a representative of that group in your mind. My inspiration was Wolfman Jack broadcasting from XERF 1570 across the border at Del Rio and later on XERB-AM The Mighty 1090. There was no Communications Act Treaty between Mexico and the US, so the transmitter power was not regulated. Learn more at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfman_Jack

We used Scott Studios automation system but i always did live as much as i could. The CRTC up here in Canada requires our radio stations play 40 percent canadian content so our musical line up wasnt as dynamic as U S radio

Paul, thanks for the feedback! As an old-school DJ, we are delighted when we "hit the post." That means talking right up to the beginning of the vocals. It is a time-honored Top 40 DJ exercise that is as much fun to do as it is to hear. Of course, not every listener likes having anything over the music, but that's why they have the AOR (Album Oriented Radio) and progressive formats that are not really into "personality" radio. I recently attended a conference in Dallas, Texas of professionals who believe in personality radio.

It's fun to see radio stations in action. I recently got an Audio Arts R60 Console just like that for my home studio. It's a wonderful broadcast console and still works great even after 25 years.
@AntonDoiron
@AntonDoiron 3 жыл бұрын
@Dan Acree well yes, I did have to replace the capacitors in the power supply and light bulbs and do a fair amount of wiring to set it up. The older consoles from the 50's, 60's and 70's look fun and I almost bought one but upon looking closer it was going to be a ton of electronics repair. The benefit of the R60 is that each module is independent of the others and can be swapped out easily. The modules look easy to service although I haven't had to repair one yet. I'll have to check out some of those Facebook groups.

For a small market radio station KMKT does a real good job doing something extremely rare in broadcasting these days. They are LIVE and LOCAL real disc jockeys in a local studio. KMKT is on our dial most of the day. We enjoy the local programming...Pretty incredible equipment too, AudioVault (ain't cheap) EV microphones. Telos telephone Hybrid, nice toys for small market indeed and it's a great sounding station worthy of "playing" with the big kids in Dallas...

DullardGuy I was on the air for a number of years in both large and small market. WLS Chicago on one end and KEDI Manitou Springs on the other over the last 40+ years. So I've got a pretty good idea of what radio "Can Be" and KMKT does a GREAT job. Dan has a great set of pipes as well, and yes I do voice over coast to coast...

CompetitiveAudio Again, live and local is all I listen to, will ever listen to. I am a listener who can tell live and local as opposed to tracking. Tracking is lifeless radio. Who the fuck likes that shit? All the jobs they cut just to force feed us that horse shit!
@CompetitiveAudio
@CompetitiveAudio 9 жыл бұрын
DullardGuy Maybe you've misunderstood me. LIVE and LOCAL is ALWAYS best. I agree 100%. Voice-tracking or even worse syndicated national shows are KILLING radio. LA and Dallas or Denver and Miami are totally different markets. A few of the large operators are rediscovering that fact and have returned to LIVE LOCAL talent at least from AM drive through midnight.

Working in this field since my high school days in the late 80s, I have seen so many changes. While my love for radio won't die, unfortunately the popularity has. I've seen mom and pops sell off to corporate and now sit fed with satellites that roll 24/7. I still work engineering, fixing, tuning transmitters, antennas, studio construction, etc. But I remember the finer days sitting at boards loading cart machines, cd players, cueing records on turntables and actually having to know how to tell time to back time the programming. Having the boss come visit and talk with me in the mornings between songs. Christmas parties and the prize vault made out of a refrigerator. During storms if we went off the air people called worried about us. Now when the xmitter goes down, no phone calls. No one cares. I hear stations that get knocked off and often they will be off until the next day. One station sat with an exciter carrier for YEARS in a old house with rotted roof. Mains had been down for nearly a decade and owner had exciter on antenna sitting with no programming. Finally FCC rendered license expired and was not renewed, Used to be a popular 50 Kw FM in the day.

I have always had the utmost respect for engineers. The days that you and I remember are gone for good. The Internet expanded the universe while dividing the pie into so many pieces few can create critical mass. The flamethrower clear channels of the past are somehow hanging on. For us old guys, we had the good memories of a thriving industry. And those memories get sweeter with time.

Classic good announcer talk: (LOL) "Good to have yuh with you! KMKT 93.1 GOOD TO HAVE YEH WITH YEH!" lmao where was that demeanor really developed in a normal social setting before radio came about, i wonder.

Dan does it the correct way, which is live, instead of voicetracking, as the big, station conglomerates tend to do instead of live. Live is where the magic is at and I believe listeners can tell the difference.

Thank you! Not only is live best for the audience, it is where the love and excitement comes from for the DJ. Live is what makes radio local and keeps people listening. How to make money doing it has always been the challenge.

Remember the Gold Discs and CD players? 40 songs on a single disc-all formats-and it wasn't hard to end up with Guns N Roses on your AC station.

OK I'm confused, I've obviously been out of the studio for too long (20 years actually) but I'm only seeing 1 pot up all the time plus the on air mic, so what's triggering the computer to start spots during a break, what's triggering the next songs? I used an Audio Vault at my last station but we still had to press down on the board to trigger the next songs or commercials, we also rotated back and forth between the computer and CD's for certain songs. Again is there is button off right that's triggering things?
@kushmobstaz9610

Their system was setup for one fader and used on Auto Mode. The AudioVAULT you've used has multiple outputs so they could assign a pot for each channel and programmed the software to work with the buttons on the board to fire the assigned decks. That will only work if you're on Live Mode which allows you to do your own segues. I have a AudioVAULT exactly like this and I mainly use 1 pot and the other output is for cue and production.

A far cry from vacuum tube board with rotary pots with audition-off-program key switches, spot master cart machines, turntables and the teletype machine clattering away in its soundproof room where you could tear off copy for on the hour news. Evolution is real!

What file type did the radio station use for ripping music, or did the files get delivered to you from the recording studios.

Jerry Spann music was delivered by the satellite service Westwood One, which used to be Dial Global, that used to be Jones Network, that used to be... You get the idea.

I am a huge Phil Hendrie fan. He is a famous radio personality that I have followed for many years. I know that he uses radio studio items to do his show but one thing has puzzled me forever. He is known for doing a call in type show but the kick is that he plays the caller calling into the radio talk show, and it sounds like this caller is on the telephone. How does he rig the studio mixer to accommodate the use of a landline phone to allow him to act as a caller? I have heard him say that he uses a phone box? Do you know what he uses to be able to plug into the radio studio mixer? Is this available to the public? Thanks.

Nuno, I have zero skills at engineering, so I will take your word for it. However, when setting up my Rode NT1A and Rodecaster Pro, there were helpful YT videos on how to tweak the mic channel. For my ears, it sounds good in the studio, on broadcast radio and on the stream. Thanks for your feedback.

If you want to hear radio the way it SHOULD be done, listen to an Australian COMMUNITY station. The presenters on these stations are volunteers and the programmes they present are straight-forward WITHOUT hype or bullshit gimmicks! For this reason their audience really appreciates their efforts.
