Pediatric Physical Therapy Exercises

Күн бұрын

I am producing this video series with my co-instructor, Myla Sunshine, who is a beautiful girl who has low tone and Down syndrome. She lives 250 miles from my house. Her parents were nice enough to allow me, a perfect stranger, to come in and share their daughter with the world. Thank you, again. My name is Amy Sturkey. I am a pediatric physical therapist from the United States. I hope to follow Myla as she develops. I hope to teach ideas to help her learn to move, crawl, sit and walk. I started this video series after questions came in from all over the world from people seeking assistance in helping children with low tone. The ideas I teach in this video are not appropriate for a much weaker child than the one featured in this video. I hope you find this idea useful and simple.
My website is www.pediatricPTexercises.com My Facebook page is Pediatric Physical Therapy Exercises. My informational books, "A is for Autism," "C is for Cerebral Palsy," "D is for Down Syndrome," "Pediatric Physical Therapy Strengthening Exercises for the Hips" and "Pediatric Physical Therapy Strengthening Exercises for the Knees" are available on Amazon. "A is for ADHD" should be available shortly. Do not hesitate to contact me at amysturkey@gmail.com with questions, concerns or favorable reviews! Please note I am unable to provide treatment recommendations for a child I have not personally evaluated.
I am so honored to have people from all over the world watch my videos. I have reviewed and corrected the closed captions for this video so that you might understand what I am saying even if you don't speak English. I hope the directions below are helpful to you.
To turn on Captions, click CC in the bottom right corner of the video

I've commented on your videos in the recent past including an anecdote about my daughter who is 16 months, and was only walking holding one hand. I was having a heck of time getting her to let go of my support. I saw this video the day that you released it, Nov.2, and took the message to heart! We ditched the stroller that day. Every time she tried to crawl, I encouraged her to stand up (sometimes the encouragement failed and I just picked her up onto her feet) and walked with her holding my one hand. We walked EVERYWHERE - to the bath, to bed, to the highchair, all over the Home Depot, all over our local mall, etc. etc. If she wasn't sitting, she was walking! … and today, 6 days after I saw your video, SHE IS WALKING INDEPENDENTLY!!!! She is still reluctant, and would crawl in a heartbeat if given the opportunity, but she CAN walk and I feel that with continued encouragement she will be a 'walker' instead of a 'crawler' in now time. THANK YOU so much for your encouragement and insight! This super high anxiety mama can't thank you enough!

@@pediatricPTexercises Hi Amy. My story is very similar to Jenny's, except that my son is 19 months old. He took his first independent steps today. He went from taking 2 steps to walking around the whole house like he always knew how to do it, within a span of few minutes. I can't thank you enough for posting this video. Whenever I felt like giving up on him, I would come back to watch this video and it would motivate me all over again to get my son walking. You are doing a great job helping a lot of mamas like me. Please continue doing so :)

Always helpful! Finally I can catch up on your videos, Ive missed the latest few so looking forward to implementing these nuggets of wisdom. Our daughter is making such remarkable progress and all your advice has been a part of that. Two months ago therapists said she might walk by the time she's 4...now she's pulling up to stand and taking her first assisted steps (and she's just 18months).

I wanted to let you know that my son took his first steps by himself the other day! I started watching your videos a little over a month ago and I took your advice to heart. My husband and I started having our son walk as much as possible wherever we were and it really helped him gain confidence and strengthen his legs in order to walk! He still mostly holds our hands when we walk, but he is taking more and more steps on his own each day! He recently had his 18 month check up and they did want us to take him to a physical therapist, but I knew he was getting closer to walking because we have been working with him so much! Now we don’t have to take him! Thank you again for sharing all of your tips! It’s greatly helped us to help our son! We’re now working on kicking a ball!

@@pediatricPTexercises hi! it's been so long time. My daughter started walking at 26 month, and now she is 55 months, running (still not being able to walk up the stairs without holding hands, but it's getting better). 2 years ago, when she was not able to walk, I literally walked with her EVERYWHERE, EVERY EVENING after I got home from work. Also, I got lots of help from you and other pediatric physical therapists in Korea (rehab for children is very good in Korea). But there's also a bad news - my daughter was diagnosed with Rubinstein Taybi syndrome last year. It has been very devastating time for me, but it also helped me realize how special she is. Now I'm happy at everything she's doing. :) thanks for not forgetting me. I recently recommended this channel to my friend whose daughter can't walk (she's 8 and diagnosed with brain lesions), and the minute I saw your reply, I was very glad. :) Thank you for keep uploading lots of activities for kids.

@Farhath Tabassum No... it's only walking independently because she can walk all around the house if she is holding onto furniture or pushing something. Everything else she is fine and she was born full term with no issues. NB not yet walking but progress is good, even her posture has changed somehow, she is even more straightforward unlike before so hopefully soon.

It seems like my 15 month old doesn't have the "will" to walk. How do I get her to keep her legs stiff to bear her own weight? When I try to put her up on her feet to help her walk, she bends her knees and sits down. After the 4th time she gets cranky and loses interest in my "game".

Nyangomi Mbulo Unfortunately, it is considered an ethical for me to provide treatment recommendations for a child I have not personally evaluated. However, on this playlist alone I have almost 100 videos recommending treatment suggestions for children with special needs. Some people say that they go through the playlist and find the things that their child is having difficulty with and practiced of skills. I can only recommend a local physical therapist who can help you for more specific exercise recommendations. I wish you the very best.

I really need some ideas to encourage my girl to walk more. she is low muscle tone and autistic. she walks at home and some other places that she likes. say she loves park. she only walks when she sees the playing area because she loves swing. but she refuses to walk when we leave. and she likes to go to nursery but she only walks when she is in the classroom and won't walk when she is outside even when we tried to encourage her to walk into the classroom she would make a fuss. she is 3 and over 15 kg. it is so hard to hold her sometimes.

Well, every child is different. That is why a good local PT is a wonderful resource. My experience tends to be that you just demand it...meaning you give way more extra support and make the child walk with full trunk support if needed and make your child walk and slowly fade down the support. I don't know what your child understands but when a child understands, I just flatly say, "We are walking." and then MAKE her do it. Expect her to fight you initially but if you are consistent then overtime she should fight you less. You can try a positive reinforcement system. If there is something she really likes then have it in front of her to encourage her...She gets it only when she has walked the distance you want her to go. Sorry, without knowing your specific circumstances and your child's strengths, interests and weaknesses, your question is hard to answer.

@@pediatricPTexercises thankyou for replying. I can say her trunk and thigh muscles are almost as strong as a normal child now. but her calves and ankle are a lot weaker. she has poor balance which make her clumsy when walking and falls and bump into people most of the time. is there any exercise would help strenthen her calves and ankles? many thanks.

Unfortunately, it is considered unethical for me to provide treatment recommendations for a child I have not personally evaluated. I would recommend you find a local physical therapist to help you who specializes in pediatrics. In general you can work on ankle strengthening by walking up and down hills, helping her walking up and downstairs, and working on reaching from her tiptoes.
