If I was driving that Honda, I would mainly use D4 at high speeds to slow down the RPM by telling the computer to shift to fourth gear. D3 is more practical to use on smaller roads, since you're telling the computer to stay out of fourth gear. That way, you can reduce frequent shifting between lights. In my hometown, D3 would normally be the gear that I use, since I normally go too slow for fourth gear in four speed cars. In six speed cars, that would be a different story. Want to save fuel on the highway? D4 will do just that more than D3 ever will, so use D4. Too slow for fourth gear? D3 would be more practical for you, in that case.

My car gives me lots of options. I have Drive, 4th (1-4), 3rd (1-3), L (1 & 2) and a winter button. Winter mode deactivates 1st and 2nd gear and makes the car start in 3rd gear, except in L where it only uses 2nd gear. 1st and 2nd gear are extremely short so it's not difficult to spin the wheels in slippery conditions unless you're very gentle. In my 2000 Volvo S70, it has a 'partial lockup' torque converter function where if the throttle is at a very specific amount between 30-35 mph, it will keep the rpm slip to an absolute minimum. Starting at 38 mph, it will do a full lockup. Finally, at 43 mph it will shift into 5th gear. When it shifts gears and the torque converter was locked, it will unlock during the shift and lock up again later, but if you give it enough throttle to prevent the lockup, then it shifts normally and locks up in 5th. In 5th, my torque converter will stay locked up until about 48 mph, and once it slows down to 42 mph, it downshifts to 4th. In 4th gear, the torque converter will stay locked until 40 mph. If the torque converter is locked and you're off the throttle, you are guaranteed fuel shutoff. Fuel shutoff in 4th gear starts at about 41 mph, in 5th gear it starts at about 51 mph, in 3rd it starts at 31 mph, and in L, it starts at 16 mph. I definitely use the lower gears when going down steep hills for engine braking and fuel cutoff. I wish more people knew how to use the lower gears to their advantage while driving an automatic. It will shift into 2nd as early as 8 mph, wait until 15 mph before shifting to 3rd, then it will shift to 4th as early as 18 mph, then mysteriously wait until 43 mph before finally going into 5th. It definitely has a bad habit of holding 2nd gear too long, then shifting to 4th too soon. It's very peculiar, but my car was one of the first applications of the Aisin 5 speed automatic, so that's probably why it's calibrated to shift at strange times. Most of the time I can keep the rpm under 2000 because the engine has decent low end torque.

@thweepz5 жыл бұрын
WATTANA BO you can. It won’t hurt anything since this generation accord was already equipped with grade logic. It would downshift on its own, BUT would not downshift until around 40 mph. So if it’s a long steep hill moving quickly you can downshift

I know that it was said to be considered a “sports mode” in a V6, but is it safe to keep it in D3? I got a 99
@thweepz2 жыл бұрын
Very loose diction when I say sport mode. Those are claims I’ve heard but never anything I’ve noticed to be different. It’s safe to leave in D3 but I’d just use D4. It lets the transmission lock up and makes Highway driving much better. D3 will use a lot more fuel and without lock up will generate excess heat

You can. So D3 basically just turns off overdrive. I would do it if I was going up a steep hill. As long as you’re not making a habit of changing up and down often it won’t hurt it once in a while

Just traded a truck that was my dads with someone who wanted it and gave us a 98 Honda Accord.. first time driving it and first time seeing d3 and d4 options.. I drove to get dinner in town tonight and put it in d3 first.. it felt weird driving it as I thought something was wrong with the car cuz it kept shifting gears (I think) and I didn’t know it would do that, but I eventually got the hang of it but letting it switch gears and slowly pushing the gas. It does that 2-3 times then drives normally until I hit the brakes.. I’m not a car person so I didn’t know what was happening and kinda still worried we got a messed up car cuz of the transmission! This helped but I felt driving in d4 wasn’t as smooth sailing as d3. I’m an idiot when it comes to this car stuff..

D4 should pretty much always be used. D3 is really only for heavy traffic situations or steep inclines.

Idk if this gonna get buried but I recently bought a 96 2.7L v6 24 valve and was wondering if it’s better to cruise in d3 around town at 35-45 rather then constantly going between 3rd and 4th I guess
@thweepz4 жыл бұрын
So if it’s hunting between both then sometimes D3 is better. It really depends considering it’s a different transmission. I always left mine in D4
@Mantis_Shrimp994 жыл бұрын
thweepz had to look up what hunting meant but now that I know I’ll try it tomorrow I do find it constantly in 4th then drops then goes back up in stop and go
@thweepz4 жыл бұрын
Nathan Brown yeah so if you’re going low speeds you can cruise in D3. It burns more fuel but it’ll prevent unnecessary shifting. Sometimes we can mistake a shift for a torque converter clutch engagement and on hondas they do let go around that speed. So it very well could just be the torque converter unlocking and dropping the rpm and bouncing them back up to mimic a down shift before it locks up again. Give it a shot :)

@thweepz4 жыл бұрын
So D4 is the one to use. D3 for crawling traffic or hills when you notice the transmission gear hunting between 3rd and 4th
@ryans4133 жыл бұрын
D3 is good for city driving reason for it is there’s no 4th gear to worry about power is always there at stop and go traffic. Higher RPMS on take off and dosnt waste gas under a certain speed 35mph 60kmh is the sweet spot pretty much golden for city speeds. Where it sucks anything over 45mph 70km cause there’s no 4th gear do engine RPMs will be higher using more fuel. On highways with faster speeds use D the automatic overdrive that will bring the engine RPMs down and save you fuel. D3 for city driving D for highway driving how I use it and D3 much better in city traffic
@thweepz2 жыл бұрын
If it’s inbetween 1-2k rpm I noticed that it would hang around that mark in D3 below 35. That’s kinda the sweet spot, but yes if going faster then you will waste fuel. I always kept it in D4
