We own both an early 2.5 and an early 3.2 which I maintain myself, had them for years and picked them up for relative peanuts. Both highly original and highly spec’d. I actually prefer driving the 2.5 as you have to drive it harder to get the most out of it and the 5 speed gearbox is sweet compared to the 6 speed in the S, which is heavy until really warmed up. Mind you the S does have some serious grunt. They really are a bargain of a car if you are handy with the spanner’s 🎉

I will get one within one year. I will maintain them myself as well. Do you think it will be a reliable daily?

@@bugnut82 I bought the 2.5 in 2008 as a company car for my wife and she took it from 35,000 miles to 104,000 using it mostly daily for about 3 years. Just keep on top of the usual - oil/filter change every year, suspension, brakes etc. Get one that has loads of attention and you are good to go. I've done most stuff myself over the years inc, brakes, new rads, all suspension arms, shocks, belts (quite easy!) water pump, exhaust box. I am currently working on replacing brake lines and the cats including O2 sensors and spark plugs. We did have a new roof fitted which I left to the experts! Hope that helps

I'm on your team. I own an early 986 & a 996. I usually drive the 986, as it is the better handling. You can drive the 986 faster in traffic and on country roads, as it is much better balanced. It does not get upset, which is a hallmark of all "911".

I was never a fan of these until I had a go in one that had been left at a mates garage as he couldn't pay his bill, so just signed it over. Very impressed with the drive and the quality feel and if this the lower end of Porsche, then the big boys must fantastic! Cheers Matt.

"Caramel leather! Its Savanna Beige. Had my 986 from new with said Savanna Beige and Ocean Blue metallic. The CD holder was an option. From memory about £400 a lot in 1999. Without it you just had a big gap. A friend of mine was most disappointed with the gap on his when he saw mine. The soft top could and still can be a pain in the arse. You were meant to lower it part way then crease the plastic window to make sure it folded nearly. Even after 24 years it still sounds great and drives lovely. Mine has never been out in the wet. Its nice to see a resurgence of interest in what is a great fun cheap little car.

My mate brought a Boxter 2.5 few years back for less than a £1000 It didn’t look like good reading It had no Mot was a cat D right off 21 owners and over 250k on the clock but had lots of history and photos of the damage. Long story short he still has the car it’s never missed a beat and he loves it. It’s been a great car for what he paid for it but could have gone horribly wrong.

I used to have these 18" wheels on my 2.5 when I got it. First thing to do is to bring back the OEM 17" wheels, it improved so much the driving experience and Porsche do not recommend the 18" upgrade on the 2.5 for good reasons, mine with E30 option had some strange reactions on the wet with the 18".

This one does look a little tired in areas from what I can see, but the 986/996 was never the best for interior in particular. I have a 3.2S 987 and it's a much nicer place to be, but a little more money of course. Pick of the range in my opinion (biased I appreciate) is a 2006 3.2 S. Has none of the bore scoring issues of the later 3.4 and none of the IMS issues of the earlier cars. A 2.7 is also a great buy.
@vincentlong8773
@vincentlong8773 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely correct. I have driven all variants of the 986/7. 987 is a different car again...more room, better quality interior etc. I ended up with the 987 2.7. That was more due to finding a 3.2 that wasn't a bit of a dog was hard, and also the fact my 2.7 has an amazing history and all of the niggles of the 987, such a gearbox linkages, window regulators etc sorted. I'm in the UK, so the 2.7 is more than enough for 'B' roads.

I've owned a 986 S , great car but just didn't feel like a " special " place to sit , I think the 986 is showing it's age , it will become a classic but due to the numbers built it's going to be a long time before it reaches that status and will be just an" old car " for a long time . Bit like the BMW Z3 which on paper has all the ingredients to be a classic but was also just made in too higher numbers . Doesn't mean it isn't a great car though , especially the S which is genuinely quick and handles really well...

I like you gave it a go but please do your research more thoroughly to avoid spreading misinformation. Pinky Lai had no input into the design of the 986. Grant Larson’s design was chosen over other submissions including Lai’s. Additionally, the idea of a more affordable Porsche was the brainchild of Horst Marchart (R&D chief), not the then CEO Wendelin Weideking. Toyota consultants contributed to a more efficient manufacturing process at Porsche that cut production time per car by 40%. The shared parts idea for 986/996 was something Porsche had already chosen to embark on.
