I agree with hanging/leaning trees are better for licking and scrapes than a branch. Long thin plots are the best for seeing daylight deer.

Great video! Really enjoy your work and filming. I live in Barron County, just north of you and also have a Kubota 50 hp tractor with a great plains 606 NT pull type drill. I think I finally got things calibrated this fall. I have been using Green Cover seed; good stuff, but I realized I had to double my planting rate (70>130 lbs/acre) from what was recommended by Dr. Woods and Green Cover. Also looking at purchasing a roller crimper next spring. Patrick Wolf

I have the same setup at you, Great Plains 606NT and use green cover. This is my first year for both. What made you double the rate? Is the recommended rate not enough for germination? I hunt in kentucky with a high deer density. Thanks for the help.

@@christopherdavis7458 Hi Christopher, I thought your property was in Dunn County, WI? I doubled my seeding rate to see if I can get a thicker stand (better germination), since what I saw the last two springs was a stand of barley/wheat/rye that was not heavy enough to work as a mulch using a roller crimper for the early summer planting. Consequently, I needed to use chemical termination with glyphosate in order to plant the summer crop. In reading and listening to podcasts regarding the use of rye and other cover crops (winter wheat/winter oats) for mulch for early summer plantings, the University of WI, Purdue University, Indiana University, all recommend 3-4 bushel/acre (~ 150/lbs/acre). I planted ~130 lbs/acre of Green Cover’s Northern Release this year, and I’m happy with what I’m seeing so far. As an aside with regards to your video, did you and your brother do all the timber work to make your trail system/plots? BTW, pretty high deer density where I live as well, which may also affect germination. Thanks again for the great content of your videos; really enjoy them and keep up the good work! Pat

@@christopherdavis7458 Hi Chris, No worries:)!! What has your experience been with your landpride NT drill? What are your soil conditions in Kentucky? I have good silt/clay mixture, so can withstand some drought. I really needed to play around with the planter this summer to get things properly set up, e.g., making sure the opening tool bar bar was 24 3/4 “ from the ground and the unit was level (I believe I was likely planting to deeply prior). So far, based on my fall planting, I think I’ve got the problem(s) corrected:)! How about you…are you having good results with Green Cover Seed? I sometimes wonder if the mixtures Dr. Woods has developed work as well in northwestern WI as well as they do in Missouri?? What are your thoughts?

@@patrickwolf4373 I bought it this spring, used with about 90 acres on it, planted about 9 acres 2 weeks ago. I meticulously went through the setup / calibration but I don't think something is exactly right. The first 3 acres (hard ground) didn't seem to cut well and a lot of seed on top of ground. It rained and I planted following 5 acres in wet softer dirt and drill cut well but it still seemed lots of seed was on top of ground. I came back a week later and made some adjustments, planted another 100lbs of green cover fall release and it seemed better but still seems as if a large amount of seed was just sitting on top of ground. However, we got rain and in one week, seem to have good germination in bare spots, heavy thatch areas, etc....we have clay and rocky-clay soil, it's reclaimed coal mine ground. I think by the time spring planting arrives, I should have this thing dialed in nicely.

We have very sandy soil so we have the cutlers adjusted up as high as they can go. Works will for most seed at this setting. We did Brassica this year. Came up great then no rain for weeks and it mostly died out or stopped growing. Sand is tough farming

Do you use the B2601 for your plots at all?
@timbertimeoutdoors9836
@timbertimeoutdoors9836 Жыл бұрын
The plan when I bought it was to do that but haven't done anything foot plot work with the B2601 this year. Need to get a small drill for it to help out with the plots. Expensive investment. Was going to do some of the fertilizing with the B2601 but the cost of fertilizer is so high we didn't add any this year. Trying to get to full no till which doesn't need it but we can see we are not to that point yet.
