I have used this glass in this Video: RIEDEL Performance Riesling
I have tasted the following wines in this Video:
2020 Heymann-Löwenstein Uhlen Blaufüßer Lay Riesling
2020 Van Volxem Scharzhofberger "Pergentsknopp" Riesling
2020 Robert Weil Gräfenberg Riesling
2020 H. Dönnhoff Hermannshöhle Riesling
2020 Kühling-Gillot Pettenthal Riesling
2020 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Pechstein Riesling
You know that I was recently at the VDP Große Gewächs Prevue tasting.
This tasting is one of the best-organized tastings in the world. Every taster gets a table to work from. You do not have to walk around and wait for your wines but instead, you get to order flights of wines and the skilled staff pours these wines for you. This is how I manage to taste and write tasting notes on 150 wines per day - even though this was not great for my teeth. What also makes this tasting special is that only the best dry wines from most of the greatest producers in Germany are being served. As many of you love Riesling I focused on Germanys flagship variety
The VDP The Verein Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter Was founded in 1910 as Verband Deutscher Naturweinversteigerer - Association of German Natural Wine Auctioneers.

Excellent job Konstantin. I've had wines from 4 of those producers and I am glad to see the Burklin-Wolf is producing top notch wines again. Love Donnhoff, they are always my safe bet. For me it would be the 1971 Steinberger BA from the Staatsweingut. It's probably just one of those "first experiences" that never fade in magnitude. My first d'Yquem was like that as well.

The Best riesling I ever tasted was 2002 Robert Weil Kiedrich Gräfenberg Eiswein. I have visited Rheingau twice and still have 12 bottles stored from the years 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2006. I also remember walking in the Kiedrich Gräfenberg in sunshine with my at the time 2 small kids (2 and 4 at the time) - today they are 18 and 15 and are starting to show interest in tasting and evaluating wine. Other memorable german rieslings were from Dr. Loosen, Fritz Haag, Joh. Jos. Prüm, Balthasar Ress and Schloss Johannisberg. Thanks for your great content and bringing out old memories :-)

Best so far: Dr Loosen Riesling Eiswein 2016. If it has to be trocken, I liked Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr GG 2018, very crisp despite the hot vintage. Cheers!

Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2001, from the cellar, about a year ago. A wonderful wine; my experience with Riesling is largely limited to the less expensive bottlings because there can be a significant markup in the USA. Thanks! I will definitely look for your picks.

Having in mind your good rating I am really happy that I did a subscription on the "Blaufüßer Lay". Also did one on "Pettenthal" but in that case it was not Kühling-Gillot but the Gunderloch vinery. Cannot really answer your question because their is no grape variety I had more often than Riesling and there were just to many great ones but anyway I am still looking forward on tasting the next great example of this variety.

@@siegbert_schnoesel Everything from Schloss Johannisberg is relatively pricey! I just bought two bottles of the Gelblack, and the current price here in the UK is £25 GBP per bottle. That's for a simple non-praedicat wine. Johannisberg is a top estate in a top location (and worth the money), but it's expensive. For example, I can get Schloss Vollrads' Kabinett for quite a bit less.

With so many choices of local wines to drink and taste in Germany over the many years of living there, I have no clear favorite. I like the Hessen Apfel Wein for lunch of Knackwurst and Schwartzbrot and a mixed salad. On another occasion I like the Franconian Wines of northern Bavaria with Schnitzel, Compote and Red Cabbage. Take me to Freiburg im Breisgau and I am happy with the local Red Wine and Maultaschen with a side of warm potato salad and then on another occasion, start me out with smoked whole grain rye bread, Aufschnittplatte and a Riesling. The wine is just part of the dining experience of a meal.

Thanks for this tasting Konstantin. It added some clarity to the often confusing number of German producers. I searched these wines and it's so unfortunate that many of them are not available in Canada. I've just gotten into German Riesling recently, so I haven't had my white unicorn yet, but I've recently put a 16' Clemens Busch away that I am looking forward to trying. I added Bürklin-Wolf to my list as they are also organic/biodynamic.

Tricky question. I’ll limit myself to dry Riesling so as not to go off-topic - although I’ve had much fewer great dry ones. I would say the Bürklin-Wolf Ungeheuer 2018, and the von Winning Pechstein 2016. I did enjoy the 2015 Kupfergrube by Gut Hermannsberg although not in the same league.

Best Riesling I ever had... It's either a Reichsrat von Buhl Pfalz Pechstein Forst GG, don't know the vintage anymore, or the Querbach 1992 Auslese. Both had them at different Michelin starred restaurants just a couple of years ago. But the Auslese had developed some funky medicinal notes that reminded me of sherry and it was amazing with the dish, nearly had me in tears to be honest, so let's go for that one. Btw I bought a couple of bottles from the Kühling-Gillot Pettenthal Riesling after watching this video. Vielen Dank!

When you review a wine there do you have a blank piece of paper, or are you filling out a form? If it's a form what does it look like? I am trying different review books and find some I like better than others, so I'm curious to know what you use. After the review do the wineries use your ratings to market their wines?

My palate is not nearly as refined as yours, so I'm wondering why wines from Saxony never make it in your lists. I guess the quality overall is just not as great? Regarding your question, I gotta go local: Drei Herren Riesling Spontan 2020. (my best most recent Riesling, not sure if ever)

Konstantin, this a hell of a tasting, this year I had less German rieslings than last year, and I have a fond memory of VV Goldert, but I envy this tasting as it seems to be some of the nicest line up possible... Very well described, mainly the Rheinessen style, could not do better... well a MW with local understanding that makes a lot of sense after all :)... I tend to feel the GG are big when young and sometimes lacks the zing the Erste Lage will give when young... in a more approachable way maybe ... and makes the GG somewhat "overpriced" ... If I may say so. What would you reckon ?

Great video, Riesling is my favourite wine. Very lucky that the rest of the world hasn’t quite realised how good it is so we can enjoy these wines for a fair price! Is there any wine tasting events for non-professionals in the uk that you recommend? Ones that you pay to attend and try 50 wines etc

Almost every serious wine shop have their periodic tasting events. I would start from those, ask the shop owner if there are any interesting wine tastings in the area.

There are a lot of tastings put together by wine merchants in London. You should check them out.

Thanks Konstantin for telling me more about German wine. I have a question for you. I would like to know more about german food pairings with wines. What are your recommendations?

Yah, no, I doubt that I could justify having theser wines on my shelf. A bit out of the price point for a retired engineer, even a relatively well-off one. I would dearly love to taste a couple at some time. I drink mostly reds, but I liike a nice spicy Riesling with solid varietal notes. Not too acid.

Really interesting to see this. Great video. Would love to try more German wines, and riesling in particular. In the past I've always steered away from German wines, as they (at least the ones I could afford) tended to be a bit too sweet for my taste, and I can see, that only the Robert Weil Gräfenberg actually labels itself as trocken. How do these wines in general compare or where do they lie in terms of sweetness?

If a wine is labeled as "VDP GG", you can take that to mean trocken.

trocken is used a bit more "loosely" if you will, as it can contain up to 9 g/l (variable depending on the acid content of the wine) however bear in mind that an absolute bone-dry german riesling from a top site would have a razor-sharp streak of acidity, would probably feel hollow and definitely hurt! Sugar is there to give balance, depth and weight... to me it's an essential feature.

@@SoulB86 I'm aware of the sugar content, and I think the next category is feinherb/halbtrocken that can contain up to 18 l/g. The keyword is always balance. For me it so easily becomes something too sweet and heavy, where I'd want to serve it colder to mitigate this, but end up losing out on some of the wonderful aromas. My personal taste just leans more towards the dry end in general, so feinherb is venturing into the danger zone a lot of the times. Perhaps it's different with wines from top sites/producers.
