Making my way down the M1 on an emergency response.
Keep a look out for the timer I added as it really did seem like a long time that this driver didn't notice me behind them...even when I ended up undertaking them for my exit.
Drive safe all.

I don't know if it's people not having their mirrors adjusted properly, but on the motorway flashing blue lights catch my eyes long before I actually have to move out the way. Same round town, I'm normally aware of an emergency vehicle before I have to get out the way. I'm not perfect so occasionally I have been caught off guard, but I'd say it's pretty rare, I've definitely never done what that Kia did.

i usually flash the car in front before pulling to the left, then hold back so if the car in front doesn't use the gap it's there for the emergency vehicle. the best driver in the vid was probably the merc that pulled across the roundabout to stop traffic from the right.

I drove on the motorway for the second time since lockdown today. M4 has become "smart" since I last drove it. All the boards from at least a mile beforehand had showed that there was an incident in the nearside lane, so pull over. I can only imagine the carnage if HA weren't already there and had coned the lane off because the stream of traffic had no intention of merging over nor of the stationary vehicle in front of them Seemed to me that they didn't like the 40 mph limit showing on the other lanes and that somehow it wouldn't affect them.

Driving on French motorways and it was such a breath of fresh air hardly seeing any lane hoggers and people actually keeping away from lane 2 and 3 unless overtaking. I love how people turn a 4 lane motorway into a dual carriageway
@markwright3161
@markwright3161 2 жыл бұрын
Definition of 'dual carriageway'? The 'dual' bit doesn't mean '2 lanes'. A motorway, no matter how many lanes, is a dual carriageway. Traffic flowing in the opposite direction has a separate, second (where 'dual' comes in as '2'), one-way carriageway for driving along. An 'A' road with 2 lanes in one or both directions is not a dual carriageway unless it has a long uninterrupted divider between traffic flowing in opposite directions, be it grass/vegetation, raised kerbed pavement area or some form of barriers, wire type, concrete wall, etc. A single lane in each direction divided by a substantial length of barrier, etc is also a dual carriageway. A 4 lane 2-way single carriageway (2 in each direction) isn't, and so the national limit for such is 60mph, not 70mph. You love how people can halve the number of operational lanes on a motorway.

Hi Chris, a brilliant drive with a good few challenging bits - it amazes me how bad some people’s driving is. So ignorant - until they need your help that is then they’d soon learn. I used to work with the West Midlands Ambulances but 8 years ago my son had a fatal crash i I went to pot. I just lost it. I could not go into a hospital without being sick so had to chuck in the job I loved dearly. 8 years on and I’m still battling depression and other complications. Since I found your channel a week or two ago I watch enthusiastically but I know I’ll never be able to do the job again. Stay safe out there my friend.

Morning. I'm an X Paramedic from London, and I lived in Luton for a good while. London Ambulace, who I worked for from 1988 to 2003 was a strange time in my life. Started with taking the Day patients to clinics , and then after a bit of time sat my exams at waterloo headquarters, to get on front line Ambulances. Worked at the Back station for awhile, and the one thing I remember was, for the first two years, where ever I was stationed. Mainly North west London, I was sh*t scared. i used all my adrenalin daily and nightly, going to jobs. Good drive on the M1. I covered junction 1 at the North circular up to Junction 5 Watford. Just a few days ago, myself and another driver were flashing a lady (now now, keep it clean!) for nearly 2 miles because she'd forgotten to actually turn her lights on on her car, and was relying on the "automatic" setting - only putting some lights on at the front. Even when I turned my lights off in front of her and behind her, and flashed the rear fog light on and off a few times, it DID NOT TRIGGER to her to check what was going on with her car. A sincere but polite word with her at the next traffic lights and then she was telling me "its just passed the MOT recently too" - lots of modern cars don't have any rear end illumination unless you actually switch the lights on yourself.

'auto' lights having nothing to do with the rear not being illuminated. This is caused by daytime running lights which even when the lights are switched off always (and only!) illuminate the front whenever the ignition is on. If the lights were actually set to auto then in the hours of darkness the rear would light up too. Likely the lights were switched off during her MOT and she is used to having them in auto.

Isn't every response car fitted with a bullhorn? whole point in a bullhorn is that its louder than a siren and is a deep tone, vehicles that don't respond to wig wag (going side to side trying to grab mirror attention) i would blast the bullhorn and if that fails then undertake. Goes to show even in a marked car you can be missed and why response drivers shouldn't assume they've been noticed simply because they have blue lights and a siren. Been saying it for ages, bullhorn and a HiLo siren works wonders.....really good tone that seems to grab more attention than a wail in my opinion and a bullhorn is good when up close and not noticed especially if you hold it down for a good few seconds it soon gets their attention!

not only are the cars not seeing you behind them but for most of the motorway run it is a 4 lane section and lanes 2 & 3 (especially 2) are pretty empty i normally drive a ducato van so have no internal rear view mirror and the noise level is much higher than a car so videos like your's remind me to keep looking in the side mirrors!

Transport for London did a study on this showing that reflective markings make little difference - the biggest thing is vehicle positioning. It showed that a poorly marked, but well placed vehicle is more noticeable than a well marked, poorly positioned vehicle.

In the US, FTY (Failure To Yield) will usually get you a ticket in the mail (if the rig has dashcam and got yer plate). Curious why this run was 10 minutes drive-time, and so many miles covered though.

We always cover many miles on most jobs - however this particular run is being carried out by an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner Critical Care, so carrying specialist equipment and knowledge to assist at scene, so will travel further distances as there are less of them!

@@findthebadger418 Makes sense, thanks. It just struck me as long since 10 minutes is the goal we have in the VFD I'm in, but that's from the moment we're toned out, get to the House, gear up, be out the door, then drive to incident. So I was trying to figure out if the driver was ACLS or similar, or if it was mutual assistance to another district that was short on in-service rigs. It was a good example of a run for a video, combination highway and surface street driving, threading a couple of needles. And it's always nice to see (most) people move out of the way :P Now I just have to deal with the shock of seeing a Skoda that can shift it when needed :P

I don't know if it's part of driver training but when I learnt to drive back in 1980 my instructor then told me that you should do a mirror check about every seven seconds when you are on high speed roads along with your forwards observations.

I'm surprised. In this video, it was the van drivers who moved out of the way and the car drivers who weren't paying attention.

It seriously shocked me to see just how oblivious some people are when they're driving, particuarly on the motorway. I recently had an incident where a police car was coming up behind me in the far right lane rather fast, however, I spotted the blue lights easily 8-10 cars back and had more than enough time to move over and let them by. It's shocking little attention people pay.

Looks to me like that white Nissan at 5:51 did a good job at moving over from 3rd to 2nd lane in thinking the car in the 4th lane would move over, which it did not in fact do

I tell you what it must get bloody frustrating when drivers just won’t move over Chris. Watching you having to go around them is annoying to me. If I here a siren I prepare myself to mount the pavement or go through a red light and move over. One other thing I loved your blue car it did not rattle like this one does. It only needed battenburgs on it. But this one would drive me nuts rattling. But good driving. 👍

Give full beam that helps more than the blue light. I think drivers more triggered/aware by that. On the motorway it's always difficult because the cars in front do not hear the sirene until your are very close.

This is key. In this clip he could be a lot more proactive about getting in people's mirrors. You're actually more likely to catch someone's attention in their side mirrors than their centre one. Move left, move right, come right up close, drop back, lots of headlamp flashes...lots of proactive things you can do to get more visible. The 1+ minute section he was stuck behind the car in lane 3 just looked very passive. Otherwise nice and smooth as always though

Chris, in instances where you are having to undertake a vehicle as it’s failed to use their mirrors, please submit your dashcam footage to your local constabulary for them to consider proceedings against the driver for driving without due care and attention. It’s simply not acceptable and this driver would have been receiving a summons in the post had it done that to a roads policing vehicle. In terms of this situation specifically, I would have perhaps considered closing the gap slightly and sitting slightly more to the offside to try and get your headlamp flash into the offside mirror as undertaking should be an absolute last resort due to the risks involved of that vehicle suddenly seeing you and making a sudden and evasive manoeuvre.
