Great episode. Very well done and informative. My dad was in the 394th Regiment of the 99th Division. They were to the south of the 393rd Regiment, at the southern flank of the 99th Division. When the 99th Division moved into the line, G-2, Intelligence, told them that the Germans had one horse-drawn artillery piece across from their position. When the artillery barrage started on December 16, 1944, several GIs thought the Germans were working that poor horse to death!

My father-in-law was a sergeant with Company K of the 393rd. Ended up catching shrapnel in February after the Battle of the Bulge and was sent to a hospital in France.

I went yesterday to this place, did a hike around, watched the trenches and honoured the monument at Hollerather Knie. After now 77 years you can easily see the trenches, and, of course, the Panzersperre and some blown up bunkers. But I didn't expect the trenches would be so easy to see.

Thank you very much for putting this together, Robby. My biological father, Albert Lewis Hawkins, was in the 99th, Company A, 393rd Regiment. He made it home, but obviously didn't cope very well. He deserted mom and had a troubled life. When my sister and I were married and had kids, Richard Hess , who fought alongside Albert, visited us and told us a little of their experience. I have some memoirs of Richard's. After reading those, and further research, I began to see why Albert's life turned out the way it did ; but I'm grateful God gave us a REAL dad. If anyone out there has any knowledge of Albert serving with a family member, if his name is mentioned in any accounts your family has, I would love to hear about it, have a copy of any records you have.

Sherry Ferguson thank you for sharing your story. Sorry to hear that war scarred his spirit and found it hard to find peace. Did you ask on the facebook page 99th division collection and stories?

If you haven't already, I highly recommend the book "Once Upon a Time in War: The 99th Infantry Division in World War II." I don't see your father's name in the index but it is by far the best book I've read about the 99th. The author interviewed something like 350 members of the division and the book focuses on what it was like for them throughout the war. Knowing your father's company will help to get a pretty specific idea of some of the places and things he experienced. My grandfather was in Company M, 393rd Regiment. Fascinating stories.

Great video! My mom's father was in the 393rd regiment 99th Infantry Division. He came back from the war in 1946 and married my grandmother. I wish I knew him. He died in 1963 at 44 years old. My mom was only 15 when she lost her father.

There is a gentleman from the 99th that would like to talk with you about your awesome drone footage. Do you have a way he could get in touch with you? Thanks!
