The fact that Henry nailed a target almost a half mile away on the first shot with an iron sight WW2 battle rifle is downright astounding. Fantastic run, I'm somehow even more impressed with your skills!

Showed my old Springfield M1 to a WWII veteran (Texas/Oklahoma division) who served in Normandy. He stated he never saw a German at 300 yards. When I asked him how far away they were his answer was, "The other side of the hedge row."

I think the machining, design, and the metallurgy of the time doesn't get enough credit for making high quality rilfes on the Allied side, especially in Britain and America. They wanted equipment that worked and did their best to make sure that it worked and worked well. No matter if it was a rifle or a Sherman.

I used my Uncle's M1 Garand for hunting with iron sights as a teen. I was amazed how similar the M-16a2 iron sights were to the M1. Really helped with the transition when I enlisted in the Army. 1st battalion 4th infantry regiment!

M1 sights are a little tight for me on the apertures, but man, the M16A2's sights are the cleanest it gets IMO. Don't get me wrong, the M1's sights are awesome, but the A2's just feels right!

@@timclaus8313 the design itself is old. 50 years is still quite a long time, and its still a very popular irons pattern. If you ask me which one I like, I’m taking the SMLE’s any day, but for a modern rifle, definitely the A2’s.

@@boywhohasl1vedhascometodie469 One thing about military M16s and M4s, the sights are easily replaceable if they get damaged of beat up too badly. One of the advantages of modern rifles is repairability. But yes, the sights on the last A2 I fired in 2012 were easier to use than the sights on the 16A1s I fired in basic and AIT in the early '70s. As for the SMLE, been many years since I fired one, and it was a tropical MKV, beat the crap out of the shooter. But it was a slick action, smoother than my Spanish Mauser for sure. Watched some videos with shooters that were very familiar with the SMLE, that can get those rounds down range in a hurry when necessary. Slower than an M1, but arguably faster than any other bolt action.

Fun Fact: if they are running spec ammo. Its actually lower velocity than .308. Improvements in powder led to the development of .308 (7.62x51) And part of the reason for that development was so soldiers could not chamber the round in old rifles, causing damage. (the US ran into such instances in WWII with things such as artillery, where units with old guns would get ammo from newer guns of the same caliber that would damage them, so they started changing case/shell dimensions from then on.)

@@skepticalbadger its not fuddlore. Modern load 30-06 wont blow up a Garand in 1 shot, but will eventually either crack the receiver and/or oprod. There is a reason they make low power 30-06 specifically for use in the Garand, or vent plugs for the gas system.

@@claytonmachine12 no that's specifically fuddlore. Op rods on the garand will warp over time no matter the ammo. Full power in a garand won't do any more damage.

@@ronaldwhitman1377 warp. not crack. and I said and/or. The more common is the back of the receiver cracking from the increased bolt velocity striking it. Which is why people even invented a replacement for the gas plug that vents a portion of the gas.

For interest purposes we used to colourmark our iron sights on the L1a1 when I served n the RAF. For low light or night firing. Great video, great rifle btw

I have the M1 Garand in .308. It uses the same clips, same receiver, same gas system, just the barrel is chambered for 308. I've fired both 308 and 30-06, the only difference really is the 308 shoots a bit 'softer'. Comparing both on the line might be fun. :)

In my first year at my winter skeet league, The freezing cold affected my shooting more than I could’ve anticipated. This was my first year shooting in icy and windy conditions; the elements can truly affect performance. How Henry could perform in these wet, near freezing conditions, is beyond me…

Great shooting... Now for the weather, As a Sargent in transit I have shot a M60E2 at Lackland AFB, Texas range back in February 1986 while leaving Malmstrom AFB, Montana going to Osan AB, Korea. The day I shot my course of fire, It started to rain then sleeting then snow hard. The RED CAP asked if I wanted to stop. I said no, this is simulated war time . I also had only a field jacket no liner my beret and no gloves. I was soaked head to toe. When done I was in 3" to 4" of mud and water. It stormed hard and the steam was heavy off the gun. I shot a perfect score with rounds left over. I had fun with the course. When I was done I got up and asked who was next. The others were E1 and E2's going throu LE course after basic training. They chicken out and shot the next day.

As to the weather. I work outside, far from home, alone, often in the mountains, of central Oregon. I’ve worked in everything from -30°f to 110° f. Hand tools stick to your hands in the cold and burn them in the heat and I would say. The worst, most miserable time is when it’s 30° to 35° windy and raining. It’s one thing to go for a walk, it another to work or train in those conditions.

Yeah man, it’s easy to gauge things with just a thermometer. Once the context of rain at low temps (not snow) is a part of the equation, that’s one hell of an experience if you don’t have good layers on.

@@9HoleReviews yes. It has changed. I am a 3rd generation Native Oregonian so I have been watching the change since I was a child. Luckily, I live in central Oregon, far away from the crazies in the valley. We are still kinda ornery and independent over here but I fear I may have to leave my state before too long. The craziness of the valley has creeped over to within one county of me? I hope the move Oregon’s border campaign picks up steam.

Greatest of all rifles! I have an M1 I bought in 1993 for $350. I sent it to Champion's Choice for a Douglas Air Gauged barrel, NM match sights and gas tube assembly, "front end" work. That work cost $600+ I used it for Service Rifle Competition for many years. I still have it and it is still one of my favorite rifles.

Really appreciated this video on my favorite Rifle. I find the Garand, being semi auto, shoots first shot cold barrel bullseye aiming 100 yards to shoot 7 o'clock low. Then again 7 o'clock very close to bull. Next 4 shots cross the bullseye, last two high 1 o'clock. I have 5 of them and they all shoot the same pattern. Only have 100 yard range so very impressed with Mr. Henry's skill with a hot barreled Garand at those distances. The zero changes as the barrel heats and it is easy to go through a bandolero of 48 rounds when you're having fun with a Garand. I tell people mine shoots minute of Helmit.

Reminds me of basic training in 1960. The M1 was high recoil in the first few weeks. Last couple of weeks, the M1 didn't have recoil after shooting it so much. We trained on "Train Fire". Pop up targets that dropped when you hit them. With no hearing or eye protection. What a gun.

Got to admit, THIS is one of those that has “gotten away”..for .the time-being. EASILY one of my Fav channels..and “HEY, you guys NEED to shoot MORE!” Henry’s a great shooter..just HAND HIM the weapon of choice for that day..EXCELLENT! Edited to add: ‘Hunting’..in inclement or BAD weather quickly turns into a ‘TEST’..BOTH for handling THE firearm and the Will of performing: patience and skills applied...AND bringing home the game. It’s its own “battle” of sorts..

Without a doubt my favorite rifle. My dad's issued service rifle in WW2 so I am biased. I am sure Henry already knows about the wet and the cold but I am also sure it was far worse for my dad at the Battle of the Bulge in the below freezing snow and ice that caused nerve damage in his feet despite the fact that he rotated his socks to keep his feet as dry as possible. The recoil is surprisingly not that bad because the rifle weighs nine pounds. Super accurate and the one I shot many years ago was a slapped together mixed part surplus and it still accurately drilled targets. I can understand how the .30 caliber recoil affects the target sight picture more than a lighter recoiling 5.56/.223. Good video. Thanks for sharing.

It's surprising how light the Garand is honestly. My M44 Mosin (the mid sized one) weighed 9.5lbs unloaded vs my Garand at around 9.2lbs unloaded. Gas/Piston semi with 8 rounds vs stripped clip bolt gun with 5 rounds. And the Mosin weighed MORE.

Sometimes I watch these and think I could at least clear the course with 2 or 3 rifles that I own. Not as fast for sure. But I own an M1 that I have gotten to 1.5ish moa with a commercial load, and Basra will freeze over before I could do what Henry does on this run. Outstanding work.

Great work on a cold and raining range. I myself hate the rain at the range. At times I would get a drop of rain land on the rear site and block my site picture just as I would be centering it.

Prescribed finish for woodwork on British military rifles was boiled linseed oil, for about as long as they were putting wood on guns (not sure on the L1A1). If you find any woodwork with shellac or varnish on then it's been added later.

I just did a cabin fever challenge with an m1 , I really struggled with reloads which cost me time, you made the reloads look very easy. I have an issue with rear sight it does not provide any tactile or audio feed back when adjusting so I need to address that. And similar to you I had a round chamber but it did not engage correctly so I could not fire and had to load next round. Absolutely agree it is an amazing experience running this rifle. Everyone should own one

Definitely need to change your rear sight parts. Hopefully it’s not the receiver that has had its positions worn out so you’re not feeling it anymore.

100% agree I'd rather be in below freezing than above. I've been un Alaska in -40f but coldest I've been has been along Mississippi River working on levees at about 32f, even just dipping below freezing the wind blows off river picking up moister and it cut through anything I wore

In 1969, at Army basic training, I qualified on the M-14. The sights were basically the same as the M-1. We zeroed our weapons at 300 meters. A nice weapon.

My 1954 H&R M1 I hand picked at the south store in Anniston Alabama Is the crown jewel by far in my modest collection. I LOVE that thing and sadly shoot it very little anymore due to the cost of ammo. I used to shoot it a lot back when HXP was only $64 a can from CMP. I wish I would have both a uhaul truck full of it at the price. 😢 The thing you gotta love also about that beast is how hard it smashes that steel even at the long distances. That thing packs such a punch.

Personal experience: I have always loved my CMP Garand but always thought it wouldn't be very accurate at "long distance". Not long ago, we were shooting 450-yards with some nice scoped rifles in modern calibers intended for distance. For some reason, we lugged the Garand out and decided to give it a try. To my astonishment, even with my mid 50's eyes, iron sights, and generic surplus rounds, we repeatedly drilled an 18" steel target (IMHO - one hit=luck; multiple hits=confirms the effort). I could hardly see the target at that distance but the old war dog came through with clearly audible hits; confirmed by my glassed spotter and video recordings. The experience really opened my eyes to the quality of this old design. Way to go USA!!!

As an cmp match shooter my whole life 300 meters is a realistic range. Bump up to match grade rounds and it’ll stretch the rifle also add a fiberglass bed to help 👍! Great run Henry

I think what I observe is the coolest things about M1s is that they aren't heavily affected by variations in ammunition as far as point of impact is concerned. 110 grain up to 170 grain, still point of aim point of impact (near enough anyway) for a zero'd rifle. Also the procedure for zeroing them hasn't changed in over 80 years. They just got it right the first time.

In the 80’s I started nra service rifle with a garand. Most people were shooting m14 pattern rifles. When I went it camp perry in 88 there were still lots of old timers with tuned m1’s competing at high level. They will deliver at 1000 yards with match ammo. I had moved to a m14 by then but the season I shot the m1 was great, and I’ve wanted a good one ever since. I should just get one from the cmp.

Shot a Garand match at Perry one year when it was raining so hard that it was, fire, blow the water out of the rear sight, fire, blow the water out of the rear sight. Interesting rapid fire string.... The M1 Carbine was made to be more effective than a 45 for officers and in the rear folks. They are that, but thats about it. Sighting systems, the machining took more time, so the ladder sights were done away with, along with a lot of other refinements to get the rifles in the field. Yes MOST of the engagements were 200 and under, however battle sight zero was (IIRC) 347 yds for the 1903 ladder down. Garand BSZ was 300 yards -2 clicks. Effectively a 6 oclock hold on a target punching center with the sight set at 300, come down 2 makes POI the same as POA

As Henry was shooting under these conditions, the least I could do is watch the video under similar conditions. It's raining with a wind chill in the mid 30s. Granted, I'm not in the prone position, but I can't enjoy a cigar in the house lol.

Excellent shooting and what a tool the Garrand M1 is! Along with the Lee Enfield (series), this is one of the most distinguished and recognisable of the WW era battle rifles of the Allied Armies. I still love the M1 Carbine as a practical carry for a up close - medium distance choice. But the Garrand could connect with authority, accuracy and the same rapidity at those longer distances. Definately one of the ultimate battle rifles of WWII era.

I have a 1954 Springfield with its original barrel. She’s clean and she’s a shooter. I took a club level CMP Sliver with it. I just missed a gold. Not bad for a rifle that saw a lot over service. It was probably used for trading her, then sent over seas, and came back.
