There was also no need for the ketamine, Elijah was already in handcuffs. Can anyone actually explain why the ketamine was administered? If this young man went unconscious for several minutes, that seems like enough time for the officers to properly detain him (even if they had no reason to). They had complete control of the situation, I don’t understand. Was it a safety thing? Or did the cops just not feel like dealing with a difficult suspect? This whole thing seems fishy.

Andy Brinegar A few things. When the carotid hold is used properly (as in this case) the person in the hold momentarily loses consciousness. Consciousness is lost for a few seconds, not a few minutes. Ketamine was administered by paramedics because this was standard protocol in Colorado, not because the police asked them to. Between July 2017 and August 2018 over 400 people in the Denver Metropolitan Area alone were given ketamine by first responders (paramedics & fire fighters). Ketamine is used by first responders as a medically safe way to calm and restrain suspects without the use of additional physical force. Police officers do not have control over paramedics or fire fighters, rather they work in unison, with each being in charge of their expertise.

I've been reading up on it, and the use of sedatives is apparently legal. That shocks me, that it can legally be done without knowledge of a persons health and/or drug history (be it legal or illicit). I know that prior to my doc prescribing me something, she asks about everything that I'm currently taking (allergy meds, birth control, etc...) What gives them immunity to this due dilligence? It may sound a little naive, but if they "feel" someone is resisting, why can't there be a body binding apparatus, like a straight jacket without the sleeves, and perhaps stick a pillow under the persons head. It always has to be the utter extreme. Sad.

@@jewelqueen5949 My honest answer to the alternative form of restraint you mentioned being used in the field, we have all seen how difficult it can be for even several officers to control an individual enough just to get handcuffs on at times, more difficult/time consuming options likely just aren't feasible. And even after handcuffs are applied, a person can still cause serious bodily harm to themselves or others. As far as the prehospital use of sedatives in EMS, they can be administered under the same premise as any other medicine, if the patient is unconscious, not breathing, in cardiac arrest, or altered, EMS often times wont be able to gain a full medical history in the field, but medicines are still administered as necessary to treat life threatening conditions, and protect the patient from potential harm to themselves or others. Whether meds were actually called for in this particular incident is a whole different debate that I wouldn't even pretend I know enough about to weigh in on, but those are the general rules of how or why those meds are administered, and why several meds are given in the prehospital setting when a full medical history can be unlikely or sometimes impossible to obtain on scene.

Think of how many people have died simply because an officer refuses to wait a second. This guy was headed home. An adversarial police encounter was not on his agenda for the night. The police deal with this stuff all the time. Ordinary citizens do not. The onus is on the police officer to make sure it goes well, without taking someone's life. . * I'm aware you said "no one deserves to die", but generally people only say that first thing so they can say the second thing without getting called out. Ignorance at its finest, if they could have change their tone and made it that they are there to help instead of putting him a choke hold!! Idk about Winnie the Pooh Mentality mentality you speak of. But clearly shows your Priorities are else where.

Isn't it easier to just talk to police and defuse the alarm?

why are people saying he resisted arrest as if that’s an excuse to murder him. he hadn’t done anything wrong and the police show up and immediately grab him, i feel like it’s normal to panic and want them to stop touching you. and you can’t say they didn’t know what they were doing as he said he couldn’t breathe. acab.

Normal to reach for your gun when OBVIOUS POLICE OFFICERS talk to you? You're brain must not have fully devolved or something.

His resisting lead to him dying. If he was smart he would've let it go and then take it to court where he could've charged them

THIS IS DISGUSTING! When the F did some nosy neighbor calling the police about a "suspicious" person walking down the street who, in fact, had not committed any crimes and was just minding his own business become a capital offense? This system of policing needs to change and it needs to change ASAP. No justice, no peace. RIP Elijah

@Arturo Carrillo OH NO MY RIGHTS REEEEE!!! Also who tf am I hiring? Regardless, just don't resist arrest lol. Apparently Elijah, Rayshard, and Floyd didn't know this. I thought it was common sense lol.

i swear they be lying about "reaching for the gun" everyone knows what'll be the result if you do that. Elijah didn't want that. Cap

How comes every coroner always rules that the death is undetermined or it has nothing to do with the brutality in custody? Makes no sense! Looks like the police and the coroners office are all in it together. It’s a sick nasty world that we live in. So shameful it cannot be put into words. R.I.P. young man. My thoughts and prayers are with his family🙏🏾.

This poor young man straight up got bullied and killed at the hands of another human being- if you aren’t there trying to serve AND PROTECT you shouldn’t be a cop. They straight up didn’t even ask question him what he was doing the went straight into STOP STOP with no threat of a gun. DISGUSTING

Investigating a 911 call is cause to stop and question someone! He was asked to stop but continued walking then he began the physical altercation? What could have been a question and answer session turned into an altercation due to his actions! He bears some responsibility here also!

Imagine being injected with that stuff, that amount was meant for a man weighing 220lbs not fucking 140lbs. Imagine the feeling knowing that it might be the end and there is nothing you can do. Outrageous
