Bob Hawke was Australia's best Prime Minister since WW2. Highly intelligent, capable and hard working. He and Paul Keating, the Treasurer, totally transformed and modernised the Australian economy. Keating was named the world's best treasurer and became the Prime Minister after Hawke. He was a Rhodes Scholar and held the Guiness world record for downing a yard glass of beer.

A kiwi mate of mine was behind Bob in the security line at Perth airport. The security guard approached Bob and asked him to remove his belt and shoes and put them on the conveyor so they could be X-rayed. My mate said to the guard don’t you recognise your former Prime Minister you moron, as Bob was removing his shoes he said don’t worry about it mate I am no different than anyone else.

We need another Bob Hawke. He would roll over in his grave to see what the labour party is doing to this country. After graduating Western Australia University. He went to Oxford to study as a Rhodes Scholar. Very intelligent man. Who fit in with the working man. Very well liked.

I cooked for him at the Claremont Hotel down here in Tassie just before he became PM, he came into the kitchen and shook my hand and said"Aaargh, bloody great steak mate", we talked and laughed for another ten minutes, mostly about footy, quite a few expletives flowed from both sides, top down to earth bloke.

Wow that's really interesting. When I was a student in the late 90s long after he retired he and a group of friends came into the restaurant where I was a kitchen hand. He obviously knew everyone would want to meet him and he made a point of speaking to every single staff member at some point, including popping by the kitchen at the end of the night where I was the last one left under the guise of asking me where the toilets were, then having a little chat. VERY charismatic and warm bloke.

Hawke was an absolute legend. Such an Aussie character and so considerate to all people. He was the one to open Australia's borders for a short time to refugees from central America so I wouldn't have met my wife if it wasn't for him. There's also a great beer named after him

Bob Hawke and his very stylish second wife, moved to the same suburb as my parents, interesting people, lovely neighbours! A real leader, totally genuine, and very smart! 👍 He's absolutely right, we are an important part of Asia, and Australia is a very important and safe multicultural destination for the world! America is not an ideal "closest ally", as they are not inclusive or ever peacemakers! 😏

I grew up with Bob Hawke as the Prime Minister for most of my childhood and honestly didn’t pay much attention to the politics at the time. But Bob, unlike most of the Prime Minister’s we’ve had since, stood out amongst them all. He was a true blue Australian character that loved Australia and was very passionate and intelligent about everything he got involved in.

Hawke was indeed charismatic, and not short on arrogance either 😎 If he thought someone was an idiot, he made no bones about telling them so 😅 Famously, he also had, ahem, 'an eye for the ladies'. He had a strong intellect, but the same time, had the image of an 'ordinary Aussie bloke' who loved sport, swore a lot, and loved a beer or seven until he gave up the booze when he became PM.

Really enjoyed this. Bob Hawke became PM the year I turned 18 was able to vote. Like all of us he was a flawed human being, but he always genuinely seemed to want to get things done for the better of the country. He initially ruled by consensus and listened to many alternative views. However, this was a very different time, when the influence of money, corporate lobbyists, and the media (especially the Murdoch media) was much less influential. Politics is a completely different animal now. I doubt that he could become PM today, not because he shouldn't, but because the media (both corporate and social) would fuel the flames of outrage.

Bob Hawke was an awesome Prime Minister, with a great sense of humour. Was also known as a big drinker. He held some sort of record for drinking a pint of beer in 11 seconds (if memory serves me right lol). Such ashame we don't have that sort of charismatic politician any more. ❤

After we won the American Cup in 1983, a yacht race. He was pissed and gave the country a day off and said on TV, Any boss who sacks anyone for not turning up today is a bum.

Bob was a Rhodes Scholar. A brilliant, intelligent, down to earth bloke. He passed a year or two ago but was a famous beer drinker and holds the record for beer drinking at the English University that I can't think of the name at present. What's the biggest, best university in England?.

Bob was a great guy. I've never forget the night he got ousted by Paul Keating. I was sitting in the office of the Minister for Defence watching it all unfold. It was an historical evening and I made sure I was behind Bob during his farewell speech that night. He was awesome and one of a kind.

@@adrianross8383 From memory, while the spill was on I was in Senator Robert Ray's office (Defence Minister). I'm not sure what Beazley was doing then, but he was loyal and a hell of a nice guy.

In some of the footage in Yothu Yindi's Treaty, which I recall you reacting to, some of the lyrics refer to politicians & shows two of our greatest PMs; Bob Hawke & Gough Whitlam. Both of them from the Labor Party. They were both avid advocates for Australian Aboriginal rights & worked hard for their equality. That is until Whitlam was ousted by the then Govenor General Sir John Kerr in an historic event that was gained by his meetng with QEll in a subterfuge plot to kick Whitlam out. It was a bastard, sly act and referred to by Whitlam as "Kerr's Curr". Whitlam, Hawke & Keating were great men as PMs...in not only my opinion. There is some YT footage of "outing the Whitlam government. Worth a look. xx Linda

Bob Hawke workedfor the unions for years. He was a heavy drinker, but gave it up when he became PM - except when we won the America's Cup. He was intelligent and articulate, and could communicate with anyone. He was brilliant, and it was sad when he died. He had his faults, and left his wife for a prettier woman, which was sad and unforgiveable, frankly. However, as PM, he made massive and extremely positive changes to this country. We need more like him. I would vote for him tomorrow, too.

i know very little.. but i believe Havel the wife he left developed Alzheimer's.Bob visited her regularly, was well cared by daughters and a home etc ..they remained friends as much as the disease permitted

I doubt we'll ever see the likes of Bob Hawke again. Highly educated yet very down to earth - he could happily chat to any one on any level. A very well informed, confident leader - one of the few who listened to what advisors had to say - but ultimately, made his own decisions.

Bob was the 'everyman's' politician. I remember he captained the annual 'Prime Minister's 11' (handy with a bat) and once said; 'The thing that endeared me to the Australian public more than anything I ever did in politics was the Guiness World Record for skolling a yard-glass.' Champion bloke. Man's-man but unafraid to shed a tear of compassion for a mate. We can only ever hope for another PM like Bob Hawke. Thanks for the post.

Bob Hawke still holds the record as the most popular PM in Aussie history (measured by public approval rankings). Gave everyone a day off when we won the America’s cup! I met him once on a flight to Shanghai in Qantas business class! He was wearing the Qantas provided pyjamas and slippers and I found that rather amusing ! 😂

Kap, you met Bob in his Pj’s on a plane. That so funny. Did you talk to him? I didn’t, but spoke to him on the phone, only 5 words haha. He rang dad , I answered the phone once, all I said was, “hang on. I’ll get dad.”This was before Bob was PM, dad was involved in the unions when Bob was and would fly to Canberra for meetings. And we got presents when he came home. I hated politics, dad ended up hating it too. Can be a dam dirty business, not meaning Bob, some others. I remember as a child Kim Beasley Snr popped over with his young son Kim Jnr and we were told to go out the backyard and play. Gee 60s or 70s, can’t remember. All I remember thinking was how boring that boy was lol. He probably wasn’t, out the back with a total stranger. I can’t even remember talking to him lol. Dad got out of the union stuff, some not so nice people involved, Dads family meant more than, well we won’t go there. Oh I remember dad came home one night, suit and tie of course. I nearly died lol. I’d made dad a crochet purple and black tie as kid. Omg he wore it to work 😂. I said, but dad, I made it for fun, not work. Dad said, anything you make me is beautiful. I never made him another tie ever 😂. Oh the stories we heard, some funny, some dam creepy.

@@Dr_KAP Oh you chatted to Bob briefly, we have more in common lol. Was it awkward talking to him in his jimjams lol. Yes, was just reading a few old newspaper articles about dad, he was good man. Gave my typewriter away to a girl from a poor family. Gee we had to nail things down or dad would give them away😂. I remember coming home as and a total stranger was sleeping on our couch. Dad was in the kitchen, I asked who is he. All dad said, he’s got nowhere to live, I’ll find him somewhere to live tomorrow, and he did. Always something going on at home, oh dear I’m wandering down memory lane, all happy memories. I loved sitting at the kitchen table when dads friends would call around, the never swore, mum and dad didn’t drink or smoke but never minded the visitors bringing their own. I never heard my parents argue, they talked quietly away from us. Sorry, still miss them both terribly. The laughter, serious political and sporting conversation, sitting and listening was magical to me. Yup, I got the gift of the gab from dad😂. Dad’s mothers father was a member of parliament in Victoria during federation. Had a country town named after him. Dad involved in politics. My daughter was asked to join local council. I thought NO, not another generation of politics. Thankfully she declined. I’m going to zip my fingers now to stop talk/typing - blame my darling dad.

He was a good Prime Minister for the time. The knack to talk to people all walks life. For most part kept politics to parliment and government. Admired (and decried) both sides of political spectrum. 100% correct about Australia’s future more Asian based than UK & USA. Probably fallen off the wagon at current state of mismanagement of country. Love your Roy &HG reviews

Bob was great. I met him in about 1993. He had plenty of flaws (massively outweighed by his talents) and I wonder how he would fare in the era of the internet, social media and cancel culture.

Bob Hawke was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford between 1953 and 1956. In 1954 he skolled a yard of ale-two-and-a half pints, or 1.4 litres in 11 seconds, then a world record. Bob was a great Aussie, loved his country and the people.

What I remember best about Bob Hawk is when we won the America's Cup in yachting when we won it over in Fremantle WA with a famous winged keel. Bob was dressed in a sports jacket with it printed all over it Australia many times over. He said "any boss who sacks you today for not turning up today for work, is a bum". 😂

Great interview, I’ve been very fortunate to talk with Bob one on one a couple of times. He was a very charismatic guy warm in nature and easy to have a laugh with. We don’t have leadership like this today due to the failures in ideology promoting victimhood, fear and breaking apart families to control the masses of sheeple unfortunately.

Hawkie was a legend! He was in the Guinness book of records for skolling/necking a yard glass of beer. He cemented universal health care as being a permanent thing in Australia. And did a lot for the redistribution of wealth downwards.

Bob Hawke was considered probably the greatest PM we've ever had. He was all of those things you observed and more.. A Rhodes scholar and a highly innovative thinker and legislator who, along with Paul Keating, changed Australia for the better. Major reformer of our tax policies and the way business and our unions worked together to turbo charge our economy (the Accord). A much loved and admired PM. Would speak to the Queen and the steel worker with total respect for both.

My all time favorite Australian politician is John Cain - Victorian Premier from 1982 to 1990 (or thereabouts) - honest guy, caught public transport to work!, really cared about us Victorians. Bob is a ledgend and he was there for the people. He was correct Asia is a huge market. I'm an expat working in Asia and its great to see our products here and there are many and continue to grow.

Everybody loved Bob Hawk, I voted for him. What is effecting most people including politicians is social media and the instant accessibility to everything and everyone. The lack of the individual privacy is causing instability making everyone feel insecure and self conscious with all the constant judgement from others.

14:48 Sadly, you cannot vote for him today because he passed away in 2019. He was our best Prime Minister ever. He was the most intelligent Prime Minister we ever had, he was a post-graduate Rhodes Scholar from the University of Oxford in the UK, but more importantly, he was the most down-to-earth, open, friendly Prime Minister, we ever had. He would always call a spade a spade. For a long time he was working for the ACTU (Australian Council of Trade Unions) wheee he started off as a Research Officer & eventually was elected President of the ACTU. When I was a young lad growing up in Royal Avenue, Sandringham, Melbourne, he was a neighbor of our family. I now reside outside of Melbourne, but I have very fond memories of him as Prime Minister, although I was in High School & University at the time he was Prime Minister

In the late 70s Bob Hawke was the leader of the ACTU (Unions) in Australia. There was a meeting of all the Union Reps and to vote on Uranium Mining. My Boyfriend at the time attended. It was a unanimous NO vote. Within a few years Hawke moved to politics & became PM. One of the very early things he did was give Uranium mining the green light which castes very nasty shadow on my opinion of him. I think he was like all Politicians ... sell their souls for fame & fortune.

I know everyone has there own political leanings and certainly both sides of politics can go too far but I go to a dark place trying to analyse the mind of anyone who did not like Bob personally. In my view the best international representative Australia has ever had and the most nationally unifying. Never forgotten sorely missed.

Born in ‘80, so Hawkie was the boss of Australia. He’s the standard for me of what Australia’s PM should be. I love him like a third grandpa.

He still holds the Guinness world record for skulling a yard glass of beer in 11 seconds. He supposedly achieved this while at Oxford, not long after Guinness stopped measuring the record.

Bob Hawk, Mr. 75% that was his approval rating. He was the most down to earth fare dinkum politician. He was not afraid to put down to the media when he thought he wasn't getting a fare go and never treated the public like they were idiots.I think that came from his time as the head of the trade unions. He started his first interview after being elected. The interviewer said Mr. Prime Minister, what would you like to be called his reply was call me Bob. was the only politician I saw sweep in front of the camera when he publicly addressed the nation on the Tiananmen Square massacre. He broke the world record for sculling a yard glass in 11 seconds when he was at university at Oxford.
