A real simple and humble hero of a pilot. Thanks so much for posting this interview so this generation can see what a real hero is.

In addition to being honorable and humble, this man is a pilot's pilot. Not all who fly fast jets, let alone an A-1, can find the same satisfaction flying light civilian airplanes. He ejected from an F-106? Wow. Thoroughly enjoyable to listen to.

“Lost a lot of personal stuff and flight records that got messed up in the divorce”. I know exactly what he means as it happened to me during that same era. She had put all my belongings in boxes and I never knew where they went as I was in Thailand when the divorce happened. I came home on a mission to bring back a spare airplane. Went to the house and it was cleaned out. She was gone. I was left with absolutely nothing. Back to the war I went.

Holy cow, look at the amount of ordnance underneath the wings. What an array of weapons. A-1 Skyraiders bring everything the ground troops need to the fight.

My late father-in-law USAF Lt. Col. Jerald Ransom was the first American A-1 Skyraider pilot to fly 100 missions over North Vietnam....he flew a total of 325 missions there....he also flew 35 missions over Europe as the navigator in a B-17...and served in Korea...I think he was stationed in some of the same locations in Vietnam and Thailand that this gentleman is talking about

HEROES ALL. They strapped themselves into an aircraft powered by a Wright R-3350 18 cylinder GAS powered engine stuffed into the nose. As any crewchief can attest, the Wright engines had 75% more parts than what was required to run a Pratt&Whitney powerplant. As for the pilots; they always brought back the 'Spads' with 'no issues', and squeaky clean. For effect, take a look at the "F..k Me!! " KZfaq video of the reporter getting buzzed by the Spitfire. That's what the VC said after getting 'buzzed' by the "Scare Raider." Many thanks to all.
@naughtmoses
@naughtmoses 3 жыл бұрын
Well, I wouldn't say "squeaky clean." One had to be really careful climbing out of an H or a J and stepping on the planks because the fuselage was almost always covered with oil.
@dickjohnson4268
@dickjohnson4268 3 жыл бұрын
@@naughtmoses The best part about rain; when it hit the "oil protected" wing, it made the wing sticky enough to walk on. On the air show circuit we had a pilot who would NEVER work on any round engine if you had to work underneath the engine.. only the top 4 or 5 cylinders. That left 10 or 13 drooling cylinders to change. We called him "Steve Canyon." He was always protecting the war birds from photographers. Always guarding the front of the birds, leaning against the prop for effect.

Loose tolerance in round engine is common , they are supposed to leak “ sitting there” , but not in air 🤣
