A friend of mine recently celebrated her birthday and we wanted to go out and celebrate with her (me and her other friend, we’re not close we just happen to have a mutual friend) we knew things were tight and just non-verbally agreed to split and pay for the celebrant and for a moment I was like why isn’t this the normal thing to do in the first place?!! Like it’s her birthday, she should be spoiled not us. Anyway, I think it’ll take some time for this way of thinking to marinate well with Africans. First, a lot of people are entitled they’ll force you into celebration and then expect to pay for what they won’t order when they’re the ones paying. It’s a very disgusting thing to do and most people don’t even realize that. When it’s their own birthday dinner they’re the same ones preordering cheap dinner for everyone to share. Even on a date, don’t order as if you’ve starved your whole life for that moment. It’s simple etiquette. I’m just happy that I’m totally unbothered about these things and someone cannot use their entitlement to pressure me. I just feel for the ones who cave in. It’s not even a big deal to pay for your own food if you’re there for love…why drain the celebrant?

I could listen to you all day😂😂 because it’s not a very common practice amongst us Africans or as a Cameroonian to pay bills at a "birthday dinner" i honestly think it’s important that if you are inviting people for your birthday dinner and you expect them to pay just state on your invite and if you get invited and you are not sure what to expect ask and safe yourself the embarrassment. personally I will make sure I’m fully aware what the terms of the invite is before I show up to avoid stories that touch.

Have been to a spontaneous birthday dinner where I didn't know I was going to pay.. I didn't ask either. Thought someone was taking us out to buy us food as per +1 feeling nah. Got there and we were asked to order what we can afford and I was like.. sorry what..!! Thank God I had my card anyway. Probably would have washed plate for a week. So I think telling people before hand about the paying thing will go a long way especially for some of us who prior to now, didn't know that paying at a friend's dinner party is a thing.

I agree with you, honestly I don't understand the debate. Infact some take it further and share the celebrant's bill among themselves. People be saying I was in my house jeje....uncle and aunty can't you decline the invite? Nobody will beat... Just say you wanted to eat free food.

To be honest communication is key in all of these no need for long story honestly me personally I ask the celebrant so as not to look stupid and embarrass myself abeg oooo communication is key 💕💕

Also, sorry y'all I don't even know if am supposed to comment twice in here. But if you are my friend, I love you and all but I don't think taking me to dem expensive restaurants to celebrate "your" birthday dinner and in a way keep up appearances (whatever that may mean) "knowing" fully well that am gonna be paying is a decent thing to do. Like bruh am not about to spend half of my rent on "your" dinner just to make you feel better. Like that's low too just saying. Infact you should be the one paying tenz.
