It’s been said before but it bears repeating: Buildings move. Building materials move. We must design to accommodate movement.
This short video provides a review of brick expansion joints (because brick expands), and control joints in the block (because concrete shrinks). Note that in this example, the CJ in the block is not aligned with the EJ in the brick, making it more difficult for water to find a path into the building envelope.
