Helpful US English descriptions: Jam - chunky fruit spread, made with crushed whole fruit, sugar, pectin, and acid. Jelly - smoother fruit spread, same as jam except fruit juice (sans pulp) is used instead of crushed fruit. Jello - Gelatin dessert Preserves - like jam, but chunkier Marmalade - same as UK Conserve - jam with nuts, coconut, or raisins Fruit Butter - puréed fruit pulp cooked with sugar Chutney - same as Indian (different from UK chutney) Compote - lightly cooked and spiced whole fruit Also, I don’t know why British have the idea we don’t have kettles here. How else would I make tea? I have an electric kettle and a stovetop kettle.

I love looking through old magazines. The ads are fun, especially if it's a brand that's still around. A friend of mine is still using the Teasmade he was given in the late 70s. Stuff was built to last back then 😃

This was incredibly enjoyable, specially as I am in the US and enjoy seeing the similarities and differences between our 2 cultures in the 50’s. FYI we have 120v outlets and though electric kettles are available at many stores and work just fine, few people have them because tea is just not that popular. Almost every house has a coffeemaker lol.

I had a new Phillips bicycle in 1969, I was 10, my Mum got it for me, sadly it was stolen in Wimbledon Park when I left it, to watch my parent's playing bowls.

@CoinPatrol That was the not the first time I had something stolen, because I had a model sailing boat stolen from a pond in the mid 1960s, when I was about 6 years old, that was in Chichester. It's really sad thst we have to learn as kids that there are bad people around.

According to that cornucopia of knowledge, Google, 96 pounds in 1950 is equivalent to 4122 pounds today. That's a damn expensive fridge! Again from Google, the average wage during the 1950's was about 600 pounds. So your fridge for a week's food cost around 2 months wages.
