The Toyota pickup is one of the most resilient vehicles ever made. The chassis of this 1994 was shared with trucks big and small, 4x4 or 2wd, including the 4Runner. They'll outlive the dirt we stand on. This Toyota Pickup Sport has served as a wrenching education for its owner a school of bolts, if you will and has some interesting suspension mods.

I have the exact same truck except it is a manual 5-speed and it is white. The truck is darn near bulletproof, and I work it to death. I have been able to tow over 1,700 lbs with it and it has a bone stock 22RE engine. That amount to weight may not seem like much for any other truck but it is quite a lot for only 114 HP. The engine may be totally gutless, but it just won't die no matter how much abuse it takes. When I first got the truck, it overheated all the time because it had a bad water pump. At times I would just have to drive it with the needle on red just to get to work, which is something no one should ever do. But I did it anyway, and the engine still runs just fine today, which is amazing that it could withstand overheating so many times and live through it like nothing happened. I learned how to drive stick in that truck, and I still have it today. Now I have moved on to bigger and better trucks, but I still daily drive the Toyota pickup mainly because it has half decent fuel economy, it is really easy to work on, and it is incredibly reliable.

Marty's Damn Channel indeed it is. I drove a 1990 Toyota Pickup for about a year. It was a great “truckish”. I say truckish because it looks like a truck but with a 22re, it’s lacking the power. When I think of a truck, I think of a F150. Anyway, the problem that I had with the 22re was that the engine liked to overheat. The internals eventually went bad. Up to 24 mpg around town and almost 32 mpg on the highway. Now I own a 1997 GMC Sierra. I miss the Toyota.

Cool truck man! I have a 1994 Toyota pickup with a purpose built 22-re turbo engine...CP forged pistons w/prepped rods and a 22RTE cylinder head w/full SDS engine management. Currently running 15psi with a Garrett T3/T4 hybrid turbo. Very zippy truck with the mods done to it. These 22re engines are pretty much bullet proof once you replace the stock plastic timing chain guides with the metal backed timing chain guides. Also, ARP head studs are a must on boosted applications.

Drive it anywhere. Can overload the crap out of them, still cruise 70mph, sipping fuel, no problem. Dead nuts reliable.

Ive drove mine 60k in 2 years, im over 230,000 miles and just installed new timing chain. I got 1993 toyota paseo bucket seats. The BEST economy buckets ever. Very little padding but still comfy on 8hr drives. Plus great bolstering for small guys. Few things about these trucks , they need no weight for snow driving (manuals anyway), and the A/C is AMAZING. I register 37°F out of vents on 90°F day on the highway. Its a fridge in there. I paid 450$ for mine. BUT in Midwest they RUST BAD. Mines on its last legs without frame being risky. The non power steering is easy but dead.

1J and 7M swaps are very common with these 4x4 and I am sure you can do it for under 800 bucks now days. Back when my 22RE went out, and I 1J swapped it for about 1500 in 2006. An even cheaper option is a 7M because the non turbo makes about 200hp and if you can get a turbocharged one, then your looking around 220-230 hp while keeping your reliability. Good luck~

I had a 1993 pickup, same 2wd/reg cab spec but 5 speed. Power is decent with the 5 speed, its not fast but it doesn't feel like a dog IMO. Compared to the 2004 Tacoma 2wd/reg cab/5 speed that replaced it, the 1993 was better in a few respects. It was quieter, more sound insulation. The powerband on the 22-RE was a lot torquier/less peaky/more power down low. It wasn't as fast as the 2RZ-FE, but that motor you had to rev the nuts off it and shift a lot more to use the power. Also the 1993 handled flatter and the turn in was actually pretty damn quick for a truck. Mainly I think it was the light weight. The big difference between the 1993 and 2004 were the brakes, so much better on that 2004 truck with ABS, that 1993 was sketch with the small 14" tires and easy to lock up brakes.

Drop an LS in it, FTW. True story, the very first tuner cars I ever saw were mini trucks that started popping up on base when I was stationed in San Diego in 1997. Until then, mini trucks were only done up like low riders or whatever but these ones were set up like race cars...

Always wanted to do a pickup build. This cool car is giving me ideas. Check out the screamer Mike Musto reviewed a few years back.
