hey, i wrote an essay listening to this (prepping for a big exam) please judge and provide feedback if you'd like; important note: grammar, punctuation and spelling is not judged in this exam because the examiners are more focused on the ideas presented.... --- the essence of modern society relies on our collective trust in imagined orders- figments of tales and myths we construct to embellish civilisation with social rules, economic order, a religion to adhere to and a political stance to take. these orders, although, imagined and unreal are pivotal to our collective survival. without these, the evolutionary mindset seeps in and the ‘me against you’ worldview would isolate groups; cooperation and diversity would cease. yet, this ‘me against the others’ perception still persists in some of our imagined orders, halting a harmonious society. to blame the existence of an economy, political parties and laws for a collective loneliness and isolation from one another is counterintuitive because we shoulder that burden. that isolation being gaps in living and lines between opportunities, pay and access to basic resources- the loneliness is the result of this systemic division. people may not individually be lonely, but certain groups are spearated from the others- there is a bias. Whilst its cruel to blame every person for society’s tendency to discriminate based on predetermined fates; socio-economic status, race, religion etc; there calls for someone to voice it. but, to voice the problem with our imagined orders and their systemic consequences is to actively go against ‘the others’, creating yet another division- another verbal stance that turns political. people define these actions as courageous and nod their heads, woefully agreeing with the need for a sustainable solution. but, that is the extent of the argument because to act on the cause is to be ‘unpatriotic’. once you have subscribed to your nation via birth, you enter into a social agreement- one that asks you to oblige by the laws, policies rules and regulations of said nation**. to inhabit and live contently, you mustn’t go against the people nor Government of that nation. Again, these nations and countries are collective figments of our imagination we trust and believe in. it is our belief that fuels trust and drives cooportaiton- hence, our trust in laws is why we mustn't’ break them- alike our trust in the Government to meet the collective interests of the people. This promise warrants action that occurs when certain political motions go against collective interests. the social agreement goes both ways for both parties- the indivdual and the nations government. therefore, protesting and voicing a wrongful movement by a nation does not go against the nation, it goes against those in power- the people in suits that represent the obligation to serve a massive grouip of inidivudals with unique hopes and dreams that require some basic needs met. When the word ‘patriotism’ whips by, I think in flashes of American flags, protests and abortion arguments. It has been misrepresented and tarnished because to be patriotic is to agree with what a nation represnts and does- the reformations, evolution and adapatation to changing times. to earn a nation of patriots, those in power should listen to voices and generate solutions. but here, I see a crossroads along the horizon of a utopic solution that i’ve presented; not every problem can be solved by nation leaders and hence the words and notions that patriotism represents cannot ever be truly represented. It is unfair to push the burden of a million problems onto the shoulders of one government; but that is their very function. Politics is paradoxical because the very prupose of them cannot completelt be fulfilled. This here is where we see problems getting picked and solutions matched to the most urgent issues; a game of time and resources. Problems are juggled and yet choosing between wealth and welfare is the ultimate decision to make. misrepresenting patriotism lies in the leaders choice of profits and private gain over the welfare and resilence of a nation. recalling that patriotism is the banner gleefully agreeing and promoting the interests of a given nation and those interests can either lie with money or with the people.
