Also something important. When you have a good move, that doesn't mean it's the best move. Always check to see if there might be something better, even 1 or 2 moves down the same line if the start is obvious. I got a lot of puzzles wrong because i went "free rook!" or "free queen!" and missed mate, or something like that.

The puzzles where you try to fork a rook and the king but the puzzle wants you to take the rook with your Queen and then when thier queen recaptures you fork king and Queen. Those ones catch me out a lot at my level. I'm seeing the combination but just not quite in the most forcing order.
@BigDBrian
@BigDBrian Жыл бұрын
@@onlyapawn4371 Yeah that happens. Often I try to see if there's some way better way the opponent could respond to the non-forcing variant, and they do a lot of the time. The ones I find annoying are ones where you have the choice of your queen & another piece to take an opponent's piece, while the enemy queen defends it. Basically, it's whether you want to invite a queen trade or not. IMO it shouldn't be part of the puzzle for one to be wrong, when neither is a tactical error.

I’d add a step in between step 1 and 2: “after checking your opponent’s king safety, check yours! If your opponent has a mate-in-1, clearly, any solution has to be forcing (checks), with the sequence ending in mate or capture of the piece(s) threatening your king.”

I also think for the 2650, I would think Bd7, as you immediately guard the c8 square and you can push the c-pawn as well to c6 with c7+ and possible c8 = Q. Idk if that is right, but it looks good. You do have to watch for Black's Rook as well as it can give long range checks along if it goes to g1 and swings over to the queenside. On the last puzzle, yeah, White does have that c4 resource so you needed to go e4. After Black goes e4 though, if white goes c4, I believe you can actually take on c4 as another option, because if white tries Kc3, then e3 wins if if white tries Ke3, c3 wins for Black.

SELF NOTE: Step 1. Ask yourself if you have any checks and if they make any sense. Also check if your opponent has any checks and if they are a serious threat. Step 2. Are any of your opponents pieces undefended (starting with the Queen)? Can you use a tactic (fork, pin, etc.)? Step 3. Scan the position for anything important and make a mental note of it. How can you put all of this information together to find the winning move?

At 25:57, I think Kd4 works. Black's "discovery" by moving their Knight would be met with Bxa1. The key is not allow Black's Knight on b2 to give check besides Black's Queen (meaning Kd2 or Kc3 would not be good because Black's knight, after the discovery, can give check. Kd2 met with Nc4+ and Kc3 net with Na4+ and Black can get in Qxf6, just in time to defend). Black can go c5+, but then White can en passant and now Black can only check with a discovery by moving their knight, which would be met with Rxa1. When Nelson played Bxb2, White is down an exchange after Qxb2 (don't forget Black's Rook on h8).
@beginneratstuff

In the 2050 puzzle, 1. Qa8+ actually loses the game to 1. Qa8+ Bc8 2. Rd1+ Ke7 3. Qxc8 Rb1 and you lose your Rook on d1. You can't defend with your Queen on d7 or d8 because of the King on e7, you can't take on b1 because of 4. ... Qxb1#, so you have to play 4. Rf1, followed by 4. ... Qd3 and you have to play 5. h3 or h4 to escape the checkmate.

28:00 It's better known as "the square", not "the triangle"! The "square" is more inclusinve of how near the King must be to be able to stop the opponent's (passed) pawn.
@mattt.4395
@mattt.4395 Жыл бұрын
hey, that's not very inclusive! what if the square identifies as a triangle?
@64chess
@64chess Жыл бұрын
Interestingly, thinking of it as a triangle may help with a few situations where the idea is to interfere with the king’s ability to stay on the hypotenuse. He can be “in the square” but losing because he has no way to stay in the square which isn’t obvious at first (sometimes). Both are fine. Sometimes you really have to hard count with various pieces and pawns in the way anyway.
