This is probably my favorite video about downwinding. Favorite tip was to change my stance from parallel to surf stance once the board begins to accelerate. Will try that next time.

Wow,I didn't even know that downwinding was even a particular thing! I am relatively new to SUP having started almost a year ago and the one suggestion i give any newbies is to do the hard bit first rather than shooting off downwind, and its always what i do myself. My last Sup session was only 3.2 miles across Weymouth bay (England)and back. Was really quite strong wind and the Upwind bit was a real slog and took over 1.5 hours and i even took to kneeling at one point for less wind drag! The way back was so easy and only took about 20 minutes with out a lot of effort at all,but fresh in my mind watching this i can understand what you are talking about and some real good tips i can use next time which will speed it up more and make it a less passive experience!

Great video. Fiona is pretty special! Great tip about not exhausting yourself! I find getting into surf stance quite difficult and try to trim the board by standing back in an offset stance. Inflatables are tough to downwind for me..

Glad you enjoyed the video Andy! Downwinding on an inflatable is a tough one for me as well (as seen in the video haha). Definitely possible but requires a lot more foot work.

On my Starboard GO Starlite Stand Up Paddle Board when I get to deeper waters in a lake it begins to get more choppy and I feel as though I’m sinking because the water rushes over my board more and it becomes a lot more unstable. So I’m a little nervous to try an actual open body of water like Lake Michigan.

Great video by the way! I have Medtronic and trying to decide if you have pump itself in hydration pack with tube running to port
@fiona_wylde
@fiona_wylde Жыл бұрын
Hi Ray, I use the Tandem T-Slim Pump. It is not waterproof but I put it in a waterproof bag and tape it over the tubing sticking out. It normally keeps the water out. I then put the waterproof bag in the pocket of my hydration pack (or under my wetsuit if I am wearing one) and the tubing is connected to me. This has worked pretty well for me. The waterproof bag I have is like a waterproof phone bag with a metal clasp closing the end. I don't use the waterproof bags with the twist locks because I am afraid it will pinch the tubing. I also put my pump in 'sport mode' before going out on the water, so it reduces the correction units delivered. I hope that helps you! Keep paddling and enjoying. All the best for your Diabetes management! ~Fiona

I find it helpful to start sprinting as the bow goes UP on a wave that's just gone under me. That way, when the next wave lifts my stern I'm up to speed. I like to visualize this by trying to keep up with the wave in front. I think this is good for me because I'm not a world class athlete and it takes me longer to accelerate. If I wait to sprint until the stern starts lifting it's usually too late.

hi Ethan Huff. you have a lot of experience in SUP boarding. I would like to know your opinion about one Molokai straiker air race pro 14*23 board, it is inflatable. do you think such a board can compete with all star

I’m not familiar with this brand so I honesty can’t say much unfortunately. I did notice that it has a pin tail so it will be less stable for pivot turns.

it looks like paddle surfing. What is the different between downwind sup and paddle surf?
@ethanhuffsup
@ethanhuffsup 9 ай бұрын
Both are very similar. Downwind is basically a long form version of surfing as you ride one bump into the next one. Surfing will differ since you will typically be riding bigger waves in comparison to downwind. The other major difference is that you will want a longer paddle board to increase your glide for downwind while surfing you'll want to use a shorter board for more maneuverability in the larger waves.

Many people won't agree on the fin selection for more stability. In messy conditions, like backwash etc, a larger fin can actually make it worse. 😬🤷🏻‍♂️

@@grega.n.1865 That's some great insights. Thanks for sharing! I'll have to do some more testing as well in different conditions to see how the different fin sizes handle.
