They're not going to sell too many of these compared to a regular keyboard, so the costs for design and tooling of even "cheap" plastic are going to be spread over a much smaller number of keyboards. Not to mention that if this is a major quality of life improvement for disabled people, $400 is worth it for them or covered by insurance providers.

Crippling arthritis, missing fingers/hands or those that use full limb prosthetics, muscle paralysis in the hands and fingers, certain types of autism that register hand movement better than finger movement, mild to moderate parkinson's disease, brain injuries that mess with motor control, etc. Could potentially make it easier to learn for partially to fully blind people combined with voice controls since hand position is easier to learn than finger position, and you can't lose your place as easily.

its about the price difference, the difference between a rgular car and a bugatti is like ten times the difference between regular keyboards and this. however i will admit that not everyone is honest, and even the makers of this one, probably aim for profit maximization, and not necessarily a product to be proud of...

@@somebody700 It's expensive because people with disabilities are a small minority, and as such the per-unit cost of manufacture goes up, so they have to charge more to cover their costs. That's the reality of market capitalism. If more able-bodied people bought and used them however, this larger market would theoretically incentivise companies to develop cheaper alternatives, competition blah blah blah you know how economics works. Theoretically, at least

If you think 400 is that overpriced for a unique recnetly released effective niche keyboard, then I take it you have never had to deal with buying things made for peole with disabilities... Brand new unique designed products are always way more costly, add in that the deisgned is not gonna appeal to most people, the price goes up even more. Personally I don't think 400 is that much, when I had my stroke, the wheelchair I had to get was theb etter part of 1k. If I had to get an electronic one, it owuld have costed thousands. High end software for disabled software for diasbled ppl can cost hundreds or more too. This deisgn seems like it would make it invaluble for ppl with partcular disabiltied, making it so they can type as fast or faster than the avg person In fact I owuld be surprised if an avg person ends up tpying faster with this than with a nroaml keyboard. Shit, even though I have regianed tons of my mtoor skills (still shit comapred to msot pl though) with a week or less dickign aorund with this, I bet I could be typoing double the speed (and way mroe accurately) than I do know Fuck man, I REALLY want one now, I just can afford it, but mark my words im getting it oce I can afford it. This would be fucking god send Point it, don't run ur mouth if you dont know wtf ur talking about. There a rhyme and reason this shit is priced the way it is. If youve never had to deal with not being able to use the products made for Jow Blow, then you dont know how disabled persons (such as myself) are just fucking GRATEFUL to have ANYTHING they can work with, nd unless its semthing stupid like maybe if this keyboard 2k, we are happy to pay bc we know hoiw the fucking market works SMH

Since this product helps a person with a disability communicate, insurance will most likely cover it. Considering that it's pretty flimsy and does not have many moving parts unlike a keyboard, it costs very little to make. There was software to be written for the product but that goes for any HID, and the cost of a patent to ensure only you can make them. That's how specialty medical products and pharmaceutical companies make a lot of money. It's pretty smart.

Game compatibility could be improved with a "Gamepad mode" Where the orbs act as analog sticks, but that wouldn't let you fire/jump/reload/etc, you'd need to include a number of buttons; 4 on each hand would probably be sufficient but would defeat the purpose of this product being accessible to people with finger dexterity issues.

When developing the computer mouse Xerox found that test subjects actually had greater acuity with a foot pedal based controller. It was inspired by the ease at which people control the functions of an automobile with their feet. Having said that I was thinking foot pedals might provide an alternate way to control the mouse functions, or sticky keys to allow holding a key down, while allowing the hand pads to control the basic key selection functions.
