In these online 30-minute events, Gregory Crewdson, Director of Graduate Studies in Photography, asks each guest a list of simple questions about artistic practice, and the anticipation of an end to the pandemic crisis.
One of hip-hop’s true mavericks, Harlem born MC A$AP Rocky, born Rakim Mayers, has taken the music and fashion worlds by storm since his emergence in 2011. In 2018, with two critically acclaimed, #1 debuts on the Billboard 200 for freshman & sophomore albums, LONG.LIVE.A$AP and AT.LONG.LAST.A$AP, Rocky released his highly-anticipated third studio album, TESTING, which has garnered over 1 Billion streams worldwide, landing at #1 on the iTunes charts in 16 countries upon release. In August of 2019, Rocky dropped new single “Babushka Boi” accompanied by a viral Dick Tracy-inspired video, which went on to receive a 2020 MTV Video Music Award nomination for “Best Art Direction.”
Rocky continues to collaborate with many notable artists and creatives across various genres, including G-Eazy’s 5x RIAA Platinum “No Limit” with Cardi B, Mura Masa’s “Love$ick”, Tyler, The Creator’s “Who Dat Boy”, and songs with Lana Del Rey, The Weeknd, Selena Gomez, Young Thug, Skepta, Juicy J, Rod Stewart, Alicia Keys and more. Rocky made his acting debut in director Rick Famuyiwa’s coming-of-age film DOPE in 2015, which debuted at Sundance Film Festival to much fanfare.
The past four years have also seen Rocky’s creative agency AWGE in the spotlight, launching partnerships with Selfridges, JW Anderson, Under Armour, MTV and most recently a collaboration with Kayne West. In addition, AWGE has launched the careers of notable artists such as Playboi Carti, Smooky MarGielaa, slowthai and more.

SGP crawled, wobbled and walked so Rocky could run and if you know the scene you know that. Yamswas a pioneer partially because he was tapped in to the underground and saw talent Long before they themselves would grow to be known. That leaves a lot of room for takin niggas shit and using it as your own. Yams has pictures with so many underground OG artists it is insane, dating all the way back to 2011/2012. For every genre, trend, or style, there was Always a previous influence or creator, don't ever forget it. That said, Rocky is a stand up nigga and his works are forever classic.

@@RonaldCamasura @sesh i’m not saying Rakim Myers is the one and the only guy who impacted everyone 😂 i’m saying that the influence that birthed Asap Mob, and the success of Rocky and the ppl around the movement enabled such a shift in style. Eventually Rocky has became responsible for Carti and them too. Kudos to Clams Casino, and especially SGP he done had his crawls and wobbles 🤣

Always thought his choice of production was some of the best in the game, Clams Casino was the type of guy you'd never imagine someone like Rocky to work with at the time, but the sounds they were able to make was on it's completely own wave. This was the kind of interview I always wanted to hear from A$AP Rocky. Not enough people go into his musical process and how he actually makes his music. There's never been a rapper like Rocky, so I really appreciated this. I hope one day someone can dig even further, and we can hear about how long it took him to master all of his different flows, how he honed them and what gave him him the inspiration to approach in such a versatile way. Will never forget the first time I heard Palace. It was a like combination of everything. And ten years later, to get a song like Sandman, where Rocky is even more refined, we really need to hear about how he actually achieves such great rapping. Great video Gregory

You know we often talk about Drake, Cole, Kendrick, Kanye, and Future being the faces of the new generation but no one seems to recognize and acknowledge what Rocky did for the culture. He was ahead of his time in terms of fashion within the music, and his sound was vastly different than any Ny artist that came out around that time. We gotta give Rocky his flowers for his vision and for keeping literal art alive.

I think Rocky is willing to be creative and committed to his artistic vision in a way few mainstream artists currently are. Especially in hip hop. In mainstream rap right now, other than Rocky, the only other artist I see doing so consistently is Kendrick (visuals, artistic narrative and ability to PUSH the dial each time on sound and focus.) Tyler the Creator also v interesting but not sure he’d be called mainstream. Outside of hip hop, in the mainstream I find Rihanna most interesting in this sense. In hip hop, there are others more entertaining than Rocky. This cannot be discounted: Drake, Travis, Future are more prolific and (arguably) more entertaining... but on creativity? Rocky is up there and on visuals NO ONE is seeing him.

Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire are definitely my favourites of his! Inland Empire is so freaking surreal, nightmarish and disturbing, if you haven't seen it check it out! Being a perfectionist is something that helps on the one hand, but absolutely destroys the fun and creativity sometimes, because that perfectionist ego won't let you say that it's done, that it's good enough. John 3:16-21 (nkjv) For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darknes rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”
