You know music is truly great when you stop what you’re doing to give it your undivided attention. - September 11, 2022
I put this up because I thought it was kinda sweet. I’m astonished that 2M people have seen it four months.
People have shared some deeply personal stories in the comments below - stories of their children and grandchildren, their parents and grandparents, their love of music, their love of Pavarotti - it’s been very special to be a part of.
Mom and I read all the comments about our little one, and the two of us thank you so much for all the kind remarks.
Life can be pretty amazing, when you let it.

Our granddaughter was premature (28 weeks) and in the NICU. She was fragile and We could not hold her. So I sang to her, sometimes in English, French or Italian. Her nurse who was monitoring her breathing, said that when I sang, her oxygen saturation numbers increased. The goal was 85% to have the ventilator removed. The doctor ordered a CD player for her, and we played classical vocal music, including Pavarotti. Her lungs healed! Today she is a very healthy 16 year old coloratura soprano, who sings in 5 languages. A miracle child.

I was exposed to beautiful music at that age. In fact, most folks of my generation were. Evening TV programming featured orchestras and classical luminaries. That's not the case today because "reality shows" are cheaper than paying recognized singers, dancers, and orchestras. It hurts me of when I listen to music like "Theme from a Summer Place" which was popular then--that would be allowed to the place and definitely wouldn't be appreciated.

I totally agree with you, when my 1st grandson was born I told his mother to let him mainly listen to classical piano as a newborn into toddler stage; emphasis on certain notes. She didn’t listen, but when my son got married & started his family he remembered me telling his sister. Some kids don’t listen and others do, and heed what they hear.

Never underestimate the power of early influences! We had a console stereo thing in the living room (we kids were not really allowed in that room back then, we had a den to watch TV, etc.). Anyway, mom listened to some "easy listening" station back in the early '60s, which included Sinatra and some pretty obscure stuff (by today's standards), and, well, it affected me years later. "There's a bluebird on my shoulder" (not Sinatra-- and the only line I remember from back then. Don't know the name of the song)). Anyway, I've had a healthy appreciation for classic stuff and some divine singing by the "Rat Pack" and others ever since. Yes: "Thanks Mom!"

Years ago, I read about a study that showed that children who listen to opera and classical music, even while they are in the womb, turn out much smarter than children who listen to rock, rap and country. I grew up listening to rock and country, but my father also liked the Lawrence Welk show. I enjoyed the show myself, when I was a young child. Now I like classical and opera, along with my rock and country. And I try to encourage young mothers-to-be to listen to classical and opera, although I usually get a look like I have a third eye or something. You'd think they would want to do everything possible to ensure they raise an intelligent child.

Children can be extremely perceptive and sensitive to music. My granddaughter (6) is growing up in a happy but not particularly musical home. I was moved and intrigued to see how transfixed she was, a year ago, by Bach’s St. Matthew Passion on the television, for more than half an hour, even singing along, in her own way, with the sopranos. Some people understand the language of beauty and complex emotions from an early age.

All music is fine. All music is good. Except for the ones that are poorly written. However, it’s quite annoying how younger people today for the most part can’t appreciate classical music or at least respect it for what it is. I’m the second youngest in my family and yet my oldest brother is stupidly ignorant and once referred to an opera I was listening to as “Banshee screaming”. Really sucks.

Yes, we played ALL kinds of music for our kids from Raffi to Beethoven, to Peter, Paul and Mary to Andrew Lloyd Webber. When they were pretty young we took them to see Yitzak Perlman in concert. Even though our little girl fell asleep in the second half, she still experienced the best of the best IN PERSON. Living in/near Orlando, we routinely took them to see local music productions of Broadway classics that did not cost much. So if they got restless we could leave without feeling we hadn't gotten our money's worth. We'd play the albums at home prior to the event so they were familiar with the music, and of course, played them afterward to everyone's enjoyment. Finally we would take them to Broadway touring productions -- The Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables stand out as performances they and we parents will never forget. Now that little girl has grown into a 38 year old woman who manages rock concert tours, traveling the world -- Sydney Opera House, Hollywood Bowl, China, Indonesia, Europe, Mexico, etc. YOU NEVER KNOW how those early childhood experiences will affect your child in terms of lifelong interests and even a career. NOTHING you ever do for a child is wasted. NOTHING.
