UPDATE: I have sold both of these Martin guitars since this video was made.
I AM NOT AFFILIATED WITH MARTIN GUITARS.
I AM A SONGWRITER, NOT A SALESMAN.
I just got my Martin D15 back from Gary Brawer...it was getting a little "tune-up". Now that it's back in action, I thought I could do a sound comparison. Since I have two of the D15's, I figured it would be a cool thing to show you guys. Mind you, the Sapele has older strings on it, and the Mahogany one has brand new Elixir's. Both are strung with .10's phosphor bronze strings.
Guitar #1 is a 2008 Martin D15 in Sapele.
Guitar #2 is a 2004 Martin D15 in Honduran Mahogany.
The song I am playing is NOT something I wrote...I heard it from Chris McKee (of Alamo Music in Texas), who says he heard it from someone who worked at Taylor Guitars, when he was at one of these events - like NAMM or something. IDK the whole origin story behind this tune, so I won't try to pretend I do; It was just something that caught my ear, so I learned it quickly by listening carefully, and then put my own little spin on certain parts to make it tastier to my ears.

I have both sapele and mahogany guitars. Sapele is completely balanced across the frequency range while mahogany has the mid hump. Sapele strummed thus sounds better and you can hear the bass notes more (mids aren't fighting them). But the mahogany also has this richness when played fingerstyle, like a "syrupy" sound which is lovely (sapele has a bit of it but not as much, more a top end sparkle which is lovely). Which do you prefer?
@JackTheRabbitMusic
@JackTheRabbitMusic Жыл бұрын
Hey Tommy! Thanks for watching and for the comment! I agree with you about some of the differences between these guitars. I play mainly finger style, and almost never use a pick, but I like all different colors of sounds from these instruments. It’s tough to pick just one, but if I had a gun to my head, I would take the Honduran mahogany. I’ve actually since sold these Martin guitars, and “upgraded” to an Alvarez-Yairi FYM66HD. It’s all solid old growth Honduran mahogany, which was naturally aged outdoors for 50 years before becoming an instrument. I will do a video of it eventually! Thanks again for checking out my video! Peace. 🐰💙🙏🎸🎶🤝✌️

@JackTheRabbitMusic
@JackTheRabbitMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave!! Thank Yo so much for your kind words and support!! 🐰❤🙏 My initial thoughts on the Zoom are that it's worth the money. It makes doing video with audio so much easier. I don't mind syncing it in reaper (my DAW), but the zoom is so easy. The mics built in are what I'm using here, but I'll do some more tests using my mics plugged into the back of the camera. I'm not sure how the preamps are in the camera, but it does what I want it to do, and it's simple to navigate with the touch screen (albeit a small one). I'm sure you'll be happy with it if you were to get one. It really is the simplest solution for musicians getting good audio for video.

Hey JTR! GOOD STUFF! They both sound great! And so do you! ~^)^~ What is the top wood? I love Sapele and have a Taylor 12 with Sapele but for what your playing here I think I'm diggin the (slightly)little bit of earthy bottom (low mid) from the Mahogany. But the Sapele sounds like it might have a little more room for a chesty low mid vocal. Again, slight. I enjoyed listening several times!

😂 that’s funny, man! I actually sold both of these, never to own another Martin. I love the sound, but they are WAY too finicky when it comes to humidity. I keep my guitar room at 75/45 (temp in F/humidity levels) and of all the acoustics I have in that room. the Martins were the only ones affected by the humidity. @JackTheRabbitMusic
@JackTheRabbitMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, G S! Thanks a lot for watching and for the comment! I have to say that the Honduran sounded a lot louder in the room, and had a little bit more low end thump, whereas the Sapele had more clarity between notes. Hard to say which is “better”, but I think my preference would be Honduran Mahogany. I’ve actually since sold both of these guitars, because I don’t really play dreadnoughts...I am a fan of 00O, 0O and concert size guitars, because I never use a pick when I play. I find the smaller bodied instruments are suited much better for me as a singer/songwriter. Dreds are just too overpowering for my voice, but they are the pinnacle of guitar designs! God bless you, and thanks again! Have an amazing day! Peace. 🐰💙🙏🎸🎶🤝✌️

@@gs3173 No, it’s not that night and day of a difference. Taylor guitars are super bright and crispy, because they build completely differently than Martin does. Both of the Martins sound like a Martin, with that sweet low end and darker richness, it’s just the Honduran has more of that deep richness, and has that extra 10% of the magic. The Sapele one has a little more mid range, and the Honduran sounds more scooped, if that helps...? It was hard to let go of the Honduran one, that’s for sure! It went to a great home, though! Peace. 🐰🎸🎶✌️

@@walt2338 Hey, Walt! So good to hear from you, sir! That guitar sounds so great, so I am really glad it went to a great home! Awesome to hear you got it set up for YOU, because that makes an enormous difference in the enjoyment of it. I’m still playing, but I am in my writing phase now. I will probably be putting out some new stuff soon! Thanks for checking in, and keep on playing! Peace. 🐰💙🙏🎸🎶🤝✌️

I agree. The Honduran Mahogany is definitely rather warm comparatively. I sold both of these guitars not long after I made this video, haha! I sold them to get myself an Alvarez-Yairi FYM66HD, which I need to do a video of soon...It sounds so, so good, and was absolutely worth it. Thanks for the comment! Peace. 🐰💙🙏🎸🎶🤝✌️

It's too bad more people don't know who Martin Sexton is. Ive seen him a couple times. Once at the Canyon Club and once in Santa Barbara about 8 years ago?...it was a small club, I cant think of the name right now. I was about 6 feet from the front of the stage, mainly standing room. Martin was totally solo and made his nylon string guitar sound like an orchestra with a few pedals. Amazing! BTW JTR Great tone! Great playing! Good stuff!
