Hi guys!
Here is video 2 of the beginner’s guide series - How to choose colours for your page and where to start on the page.
In the video, I will share with tips on how to choose colours, where to get inspiration from and how I choose my colours. In addition, I will plan my colours for a page on video and talk you through how to get started on a page when you are feel stuck!
Many of you have been asking questions regarding the process of colouring, from start to finish! From how to pick out a page, to choosing colours, shading, creating a 3D effect and finishing off the page with embellishments. I have been avoiding doing these videos for a while as I am self-taught and don’t think I have much theory behind what I do when it comes to colouring - I just colour and have fun doing it!
But I thought it is about time I took on the challenge and at least share with you all my process of colouring from start to finish!
I really hope you guys find this video informative, interesting and helpful! I hope you enjoy watching this series!
Happy colouring!

As a beginner, I purchased a color wheel to help me pick my colors for a page and help with color knowledge because choosing colors is where I had the most difficulty. I later swatched all my pencils in color family (with the help of KZfaq colorists) which has been very helpful. When I choose a page to color I refer to my swatched chart and decide from there. Using the swatch chart and referring back to the color wheel has helped me immensely. One of the biggest helpers for me is watching videos like this one. I have learned so much about color blending, choosing colors, color alongs and all kinds of techniques from colorists. Thank you for another informative video.

Thank you for this! Your colours are always so harmonious. I tend to experience analysis paralysis when it comes to choosing colours and I often spend so much time on it for “meh” results. Thank you for showing actual color palette resources. Since that certain product came on the market with very misleading advertising there has been so much hype over something that has actually existed for a hundred years, and is a FREE resource from many other sources. Color palettes were a product of the design industry who influences advertisement and retail product development, with the goal to either influence consumer behavior or encourage repurchasing of product on a seasonal basis. There is a serious misconception regarding the use of color palettes as well... they were never intended to be the only colors used in a project. You have to pull in neutrals to make them work. I've seen so many tutorials that are just.. not great.. where people are trying to force themselves to use only the colors in the palette. Additionally.. these are suggestions, they are in no way the "right" colors or somehow "correct". The vast majority are just pulled randomly from an image that could be of anything with no actual thought involved. It's just a tool.. or an inspiration for creativity.

I’m glad I read your comment. I bought the color cubes and I watched a few tutorials on how to use them. I thought I was suppose to only use the colors on the palette and quickly grew frustrated. It felt limiting and I did not like the results of my completed pages. I kept thinking of using two cards per page plus whatever natural colors I need for trees or leaves, etc. I will just use them as suggestions and add whatever colors come up during my coloring process. I started coloring for fun and stress relief and I don’t want to complicate the process.

I typically stick to one set of pencils at a time, however I have combined a few sets successfully. The sets were my polys and my arteza expert.. both of which I really love but both of which are rather lacking in light/pastel shades. They were combined with the brutfuner macarons and the castle art pastel tints respectively. The first step was choosing another pencil that is very similar in formula. It's hard for me personally to flip from a transparent oil based to a opaque wax base for example because they require completely different methods of application in order to blend/layer successfully. So they were each matched with a similar formulation that they worked well with. They are each also very similar in core size/appearance which I find nice but may not be necessary for others. The next was to physically combine them into a single set in a larger case. Both sets were swatched, then compared, then combined.. so the pastels were placed within the base set exactly where they should go in regards to shade, tone, and hue. It was a lot of work, and took me pretty much an entire weekend for each of them. When they were separate entities in their own cases it was very confusing and frustrating to use them together... but actually combined into a cohesive set they are a joy to use. You might try to find the Goldfaber aqua pastel set.. they would go very well with your AD's since GFA is the baby sister of AD. I don't know of many other water based pastel sets. It's definitely a space in the market that is due for some attention. You may find some good open stock options in the carandache supracolor line as well though. I found a very good resource for comparing watercolor pencils.. it's a free download PDF from karenhullart called watercolorconversionchart2019.. I wish I could give you a link but YT won't allow it, just google.

@shelscolouringjourney Жыл бұрын
Thank you for all the suggestions. Watercolour pencils in pastels is definitely missing in the market! It didn't even strike me that majority of the pastel sets I have heard of are not waterbed 😂 I may have to branch out and get some pencils that are not waterbed to broaden my options 🤗💗

In another video you mentioned that sometimes you wish you had a certain shade that's not in the FC set. You seem to like flowers and plants, and based on that, I can recommend the Caran d'Ache Supracolor pencils. They are the watercolour version of the CdA Pablos (same names, same numbers). I'm pretty sure you can buy them open stock, so you don't have to splash out on a full set.

I use the color cubes for inspiration, but I agree with the other comments about but limiting yourself and needing to bring in other colors, especially neutrals. Sarah had a separate digital download for the common colored pencil brands so you can look up the specific pencils for your chosen palette. It's cumbersome and not always accurate. I find it's easier to swatch the colors to match. The tangible cards that can by laid against my work is nice. Especially if I've partly colored a page and I'm stuck with which colors to add in.

Very interesting watching your natural color instincts struggle with the color wheel. I think what was happening is that you wanted those peacocks to pop.. and one way to do that is to choose a color that DOESN'T go with all the rest... such as the turquoise and cool green. It could be jarring, or done subtly it could just be interesting to the eye. Not "technically" correct.. but effective. Additionally with a natural subject color schemes simply don't apply much of the time.. a bird doesn't choose to roost in an area based on whether or not it forms a triad color scheme. Also the pink/purples.. you LIKE pink/purples even though they weren't part of the color scheme, so you were compelled to add them. Neutrals for the branches simply don't count and are perfectly acceptable to add to any color scheme. They are the frame around the elements of the picture. Another great example of how these tools are just suggestions, and completely open to the whims of the artist. It's called "artistic license" for a reason.
