As promised, here are some directors I really wanted to add, but couldn't for time reasons: Jane Campion: The Power of the Dog was great (possibly her best) and she is set to direct another movie soon after a long break in the 2010s. She just lost out to George Miller because Mad Max is a hot topic right now. Richard Linklater: The Before trilogy is the best trilogy of all time and School of Rock is insane. But I think his movies are now too niche for this list. Robert Eggers: You probably saw The Lighthouse poster in the background of my Wonka video, but I unfortunately think Eggers is just a bit too weird to be on a beginner's list. Ari Aster: Also a too weird and scary. But all 3 of his movies are great. David Lowrey: This would be a very personal pick as The Old Man and The Gun and The Green Knight are two of my favorites, but I think David was a bit too slow to make the list. Edgar Wright: Its only one movie, but Wright really let me down with Last Night in Soho. I'm sure he will bounce back though. Noah Baumbach: His writing partner made it on the list in Greta, but I think his own movies are also a bit too niche to be on the beginner list. Martin McDonough: Banshees of Inersherin is NUTS. Rian Johnson: The best Star Wars director is too mainstream for this list. And then a LOT of filmmakers I could have put in the Freshman Class portion: Kogonada, Jane Schoenbrun, Matt Johnson, Michael Sarnoski, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Lee Isaac Chung, Bo Burnham (please make more movies)

Great list! Rather amusingly, my three favourite directors are James Cameron, John Carpenter and Sam Raimi, and none of them made the list! If you do a second part, definitely include those three! 😊

Great video man, was kinda shocked when I seen you don’t even have a 100 subscribers! Good things are coming with this quality of content. I’m not really at all a beginner to film, but was just curious on what you had to say haha

Hi John😊 Love all your picks and are spot on. You had all my favorites on your list. One that I would like to add was Colm Bairéad from Ireland. His debut film the Quiet Girl, was such a heart tugger but such a beautifully understated movie. Not much dialogue but lots to say. Keep up the good work. Look forward to your next one!

Where’s the love for all the old school directors? Kurosawa, Hitchcock, Chaplin, Sidney Lumet, Billy Wilder. Those are some of the directors people should be watching if they’re serious on getting into great movies, man.

Totally agree, made this video as more of a guide for people to use as they look forward to new movie releases. Thats why I stuck to directors that have movies planned out within the next decade.

Peter Weir (watch Gallipoli especially, and a young Mel Gibson); and Baz LuGerman (watch Strictly Ballroom, some of his latter stuff a bit too box-office’y for me). Enjoyed your list and takes, great job 👍

it's funny i'm like the opposite of what you describe. i've seen all the movies themselves but almost never pay attention to the directors until people pick up on their oeuvres being overall. for example i've been in love with whiplash since its release. never even knew he made lala land as well..similar with swiss army man and everything everywhere. no idea until now

Effort is always great. If it hadn't been for your drive to make this video I'd have nothing to comment on. So for starters you should ignore this, since your determination will create more content of your type while mine will stop at this comment :) Dude, you didn't really say anything new about the directors, or even relevant. If you're making an overview of directors I don't think you should comment on what their movies did to you (e.g. ''eye opening experience about suffering which lasts too long'') but on what their movies stand out for or what style/volume/school/genre the movies made a mark on or shaped. Not saying anything that can be universal (saying facts about directors but that are the creation of your impressions) makes this whole video not very useful for beginners, because I doubt they'll call Wes Anderson ''the director that visually pleases John George, the novice who basically reacts to directors and their imdb pages. This would be great content if someone were to stalk your rottentomatoes account but for movie beginners... it won't get them off that mark. Again, a comment has a much lower status than a video so just do what you're satisfied with and you'll have your audience. Rock n roll

Appreciate the feedback a ton. You’re actually echoing a lot of stuff I was saying to myself about halfway through editing this video. Originally went into my second video just trying to get it done as quickly as I could just to show myself I could keep this up, but this topic is a lot deeper than I had originally thought. I honestly would love to eventually try to redo this one with more time and effort put into the script. Seriously though KZfaq needs more commenters like you, really intricate and caring constructive criticism.

IT IS EASY to keep up with movies. Don't wach or look too ANYTHING made after 2010 and very Little made after 2002. You want to make a Good movie look to the 1900's Cause they had the best movies FILMS and Cinema. The CRAP made these days isn't fit to be scraped off a dead man's shoe before he crosses the river.

This is literally the worst and most biased way to look at films. Some countries have film industries that are new and only starting to peak in the 2010's. Look at Iran and South Korea. Two countries that have had political change and upheaval throughout the decades and only in the 2000's/2010's are seeing are huge influx of cinema such as Asghar Farhadi in Iran and Lee Chang Dong in South Korea
