I got into Black Metal with Gorgoroth. I discovered them with the album Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam when I was 13 and I was blown away. To this day I still have Gorgoroth as one of my favourite bands, but I much prefer the early era to the Gaahl era now.

@@Tikus_90 Yeah i know, theres alot of good ones and i've played in alot of good ones in the northwest. Theres also Uada, UdûN, Wolves in the Throne Room, Black Witchery, Profanatica, Havohej, Abigail Williams, Agalloch, Averse Sefira, Dawn ov the Apocalypse, Nocturnal Decay, Black Funeral, Von, Thy Infernal, etc. I tried to originally stick with 4 bands for each country and randomly just thought of a band. Just too many to mention. Sweden is my favorite and could name hundreds of bands but i will not do that ha ha.

Deathcrush is a good starter especially for those who get into it due to Learning about the Norwegian scene’s unfortunate history, other albums are, under the sign of hell by Gorgoroth, Burzum’s filosofem or burzum( filosofem for those into longer ambient tracks, burzum for a smaller portion. At the heart of winter-immortal, a blaze in the northern sky- darkthrone and storm of the light’s bane- dissection. Those Are among the albums that really got me into black metal

Would definitely include Ulver's Bergtatt since the Album perfectly blends melodic riffs, acoustic passages, dark bm riffs with blast beats and both clean and shrieked vocals to create an amazing journey with an unbelievable atmosphere. It got almost everything that makes black metal great, is pretty catchy at times and generally an amazing album which is why I would definitely include it as an introduction to black metal.

@georgecostan3248

My introduction was Dimmu Borgir's "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse" video in both black metal and metal as a whole. As a freshman in the metal community almost 20 years ago, it was the most extreme musical experience I had up until that moment. Afterwards, I discovered Behemoth, COF, Dark Funeral, and Anorexia Nervosa. Searched for their members' side-projects and then, went by countries. I'm glad you mentioned Bathory, as many people forget it was the main inspiration for the Norwegian scene, but starting from their debut. Mayhem was always an oddity, taking stuff from death metal and grindcore, when the genres were not yet clearly defined.

I'll write this before watching and see how it works out: Essentials: 1) Immortal - Pure Holocaust. Their most orthodox BM album, definitely a staple of the genre for a newcomer. 2) Emperor - Nightside Eclipse. A classic whose melody and atmosphere will surely catch newcomers' attention. 3) Marduk - Those of the Unlight. Less well known than the Norwegian Second Wave stuff, but an excellent view into another school of BM. Genre-benders, or "further reading": 1) Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane - the perfect mix of black and death metal and tons of melody turn this into a masterpiece 2) Burzum - Det Som Engang Var (or Filosofem); the original atmospheric black metal creations, will lead people into that subgenre. 3) Rotting Christ - Triarchy of the Lost Lovers (or A Dead Poem); amazing mix of melodic BM and gothic elements, an essential band for those who enjoy gothic too. Personal picks: 1) Caladan Brood - Echoes of Battle: the quintessential epic atmospheric BM sound, for fans of Summoning, Burzum and much more. 2) Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger: the absolute masterpiece of minimalist black metal, an essential listen for new BM fans. 3) Drudkh - Autumn Aurora: a must-listen to fans of atmospheric / folky BM. 4) Enslaved: Vikingligr Veldi: I had to put in a fourth one because you gotta have some viking-themed black metal metal represented here.

Ok, now to react to your choices. Excellent 3 essentials, I also debating putting in DMDS but I figure it as a bit more of a second-level discovery album, once a person already enjoys BM somewhat. A Blaze is excellent but I didn't put it due to its partially death metal nature. Genre-benders absolutely concur, we have similar choices. As for personal picks, glad to see Marduk on there too, although I personally dislike Panzer Division as an album. It feels like their most stereotypical album and I much prefer how Plague Angel handled the Intense Marduk approach. Great choice with Enslaved! As for DSO, I personally never really got into their sound.

The first Black Metal song that I have heard and enjoyed was In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion by Agalloch. The Black metal album for beginners that I suggest is December moon by the band Morbid. it not only has elements of early Black Metal but also death metal and thrash metal as well. so it would be pretty easy to get into that album for those people who are already into thrash metal and death metal and want to try to get into black metal.

I’m 20 now and have been listening to metal for about 6 years and didn’t start getting serious about it until about 4 years ago. Only now have I finally progressed to black and death metal(maybe a little less than a year at this point) and I can finally say I’m used to the raw sound. I’m currently going through all of Bathory’s discography and am at Twilight of the Gods. I would say Blood Fire Death just slightly edged out HammerHeart for me.

Best advice is to start with well known bands that Google constantly recommends + symphonic / melodic pretty stuff. You can't just expect to like it immediately, it takes time. Don't just jump into things, for example: Les Legions Noires, Gnaw their Tongues or Anaal Nathrakh. Try going with bands that are well known and popular, read reviews or forums for similar styles or best albums. Use the community to guide you.

Wow, some really strong albums in your recommendation! I've always felt like Frost has been overlooked ever since it was released, it's still one of my favorite Enslaved albums. I absolutely love In The Nightside Eclipse, I listened to it so damn much, but I could never get into Anthems. There's so much Dimmu Borgir that you could have used, I would have picked Death Cult Armageddon in place of something else. Completely agree with you that Bathory is the originator of black metal, Venom is just.... bad.

Czech these bands out too: Törr - Armageddon, Institut klinické smrti, Chcípni o kus dál (black/thrash I'd say) Root - Zjevení, Hell Symphony (thrashy as well, unique vocal style with spoken and chanted passages) Master's Hammer - Rituál and Jilemnický okultista (a bit on the proggy/avant-garde side, simply amazing) Trollech - Ve hvozdech and Darkseal - Stvoření světa (pagan/folk)

Windir - Arntor or 1184. This would help people get into folk-influenced bands. But Windir is always better ;) Sidenote: I think Enslaved’s Frost is not quite folky, it has a more black metal meets viking/norse mythology vibe. Old (first two albums) Satyricon would even be a better option maybe, they literally use old Norwegian folkmelodies translated into blackmetal riffs. The Shadowthrone is a classic. Futhermore Summoning should be on this list (fantasy/epic). And Aquilus (Griseus) for the classical music drop.:)
