I'm new to DSP, so sorry if I'm saying something dumb, but what about multi-taper spectral analysis? It seems like most noise should be ergodic?

Thanks for posting this. It is nicely done. I have been using spectral analysis via home brew MATLAB scripts to study piano tones (I first bought MATLAB in 1989 when the whole system came on a 5 1/4" floppy disc). For high resolution I numerically evaluate int[exp(-j2PI f t)*y(t)] for a selected frequency subgrid where I can arbitrarily specify the separation in that frequency subgrid. This appears to give the desired frequency resolution but it is quite time consuming and it does not solve the leakage problem but it does appear to be an improvement on padding (but not in time consumption). The use of filter banks is new to me. Can you share a reference that would be an introduction to using filter banks for spectral analysis? Thanks again. -Dave
