9 months ago, I made this video: • Make your own stylish ...
Since then, I've learned a ton more about Faraday cages, and experimented a lot to make an even BETTER box.
It turns out that my original box was only so-so at blocking Bluetooth. My original testing of Bluetooth blocking was, shall we say, not very thorough. My primary focus was blocking cell network signals.
I also mistakenly assumed that if Bluetooth was blocked, WiFi at 2.4 GHz would also be blocked. Nope! WiFi is much harder to block due to the higher signal strength (among other things).
I'm fired!
To make matters worse, we're still learning about how Faraday cages actually work (people.maths.ox.ac.uk/trefeth...!
And so, I give you: Stylish Smartphone Faraday Box: Mark II
Aaand, I'm rehired!
One thing to keep in mind is that for some people, a simple cookie tin or wrapping the phone in aluminum foil will do. But - and this is a BIG but - it really depends.
What phone? What signal strengths are we talking about? How close is the transmitter you're connecting to? What WiFi band are you using? How good are the seals on your box (conductivity-wise)?
Faraday cages never actually "block" signals - they simply attenuate (or weaken) those signals. Thus, what works for one person may not work for another. This is why Faraday bag manufacturers report numbers like "80dB of attenuation" or "100dB attenuation!".
You may even find that you can buy a $99 Faraday bag, stick your phone inside, and if you're standing too close to whatever antenna, oops! It doesn't block the signal. It's a tricky business, and it's a lot more complicated than just: foil = works.
So, you're gonna have to test things for yourself! This box was VERY thoroughly tested, but with my Nexus 5X phone, my Bluetooth accessories, and the very good 2.4 GHz Intel WiFi in my high-end laptop.
Also, you do NOT need to ground a Faraday cage/box. I did all my testing for this new box twice: with and without ground. The ground made no difference. Usually, pro Faraday cages are grounded for reasons other than increased shielding, because grounding is not necessary. The redistribution of electrical charge in the metal of the Faraday cage is what's important.
Finally, the equipment needed to thoroughly and properly test a Faraday cage is beyond most of our budgets, so the simple alternative is to test, test, test for your specific gizmos and situation!

I build MRI rooms and there is a science to making rf (radio frequency)proof rooms. You need several components . A outer metal shell. A inner metal shell. Both shells must be isolated from each other. All gaps must be tight or have a copper mesh or wool to make the connection in the shell tight. Both shells must have a independant ground connection . They use this in MRI. Corporate conference rooms and in Embassies worldwide.

Scottie, you're right that there's a lot of disinformation on the internet concerning building a Faraday cage. I'd read that you could take a metal box and line it with cardboard. I took an old metal lunchbox and glued in cardboard from file folders. However, where the lid fits down over the bottom there's paint on the outside of the bottom which I didn't remove. The cell signal still got through. Then I wrapped my phone in one layer aluminum foil and put it in the box. The cell signal still got through. I also tried putting my phone in a stainless steel refrigerator, but the cell signal again got through. Through my experimentation I have learned that it's MUCH easier to block the signal of a car keyfob than the RF cellphone signals. And that the range of frequencies for cellphones is 600 MHZ to 2500 MHZ. Thanks for this very informative video. Now I'm not stumbling around in the dark! I'm also now wondering if those Faraday bags you can buy really work to block cellphone signals, Bluetooth and wifi?
@rh7163

I find it hard to comprehend as to why somebody hasn't produced a portable metal case like an extruded metal cigar case in which the lid comes off the bottom half, your cellphone slides in and the top slides back on. Surely a rocket scientist would have enough incentives to design, build and market something to block cellphone, wifi and bluetooth signals ?

Guitarist and guitar tinkerer here. So we use that tape as well as cavity paint for RF shielding. Theres a method to apply the tape where every strip you lay down, you dog ear one corner over to the previous strip of tape. For a wood box, the cavity rf shielding paint would probably be better. Its what youll find if you open up a decent guitar. Its black in color. Both are used to mitigate what is called "60 cycle hum" most commonly found in single coil pickups. You get that 50 or 60 cycle hum from flourescent lights, electrical wiring etc. Hope that helps.

In eng.school the 50 Hz interference from the room lights always had to be accounted for. It's just a consequence of having a 50 Hz grid. The lights look constant but they're just flickering at a rate that we can't see. Can be 60 depending on where you live.

This is awesome info. More important than ever, when considering what governments are planning with the "contact tracing" apps. We all know it's not just about our health. This summer, Google and Apple will already add them into the OS and the next update for our cell phones will give us the app/service without anyone downloading it. I don't want to necessarily have to leave my phone at home every time I leave the house, but it is my first option until I have a working Faraday Cage/Box, whatever available for it. This government overreach has to be stopped, especially because it will be implemented globally. We are already giving our privacy away each day with our cell phones. This info is very valuable to stop this. Thank you so much.

Just build a Faraday cage inside your entire house . No joke... You may or may not know this . If you have Wifi in your house you can be watched through your walls. I predict that many future homes will be built with the intention of being a Farady Cage... Maybe the Drywall will be already impregnated with blocking abilities and all of the Drywall Will have contact points to shield the home...

Hey Scott, Amazing work man! I did two things with regular tinfoil. First: I covered each interior side with 4 layers of regular tinfoil. Second, With some folding skills and rgular tape I did a little faraday pouch. Of course, you have to be careful with the gaps, even a tiny slit can create a signal leak. Both work great individually and I was also kind of worried about WIFI. However, When I used the pouch and then put it inside the box, it worked wonders. Bluetooth, Wifi and Cellular are completely rendered useless. Combination of amount of tinfoil, proper sealing and inspiration makes a perfect combination. Thank you for the inspiration and information Scott! With 5G at the door, I think a Third installment of this faraday box series is in order

There is such a thing as RF shielding paint, used in luthierie, to eliminate single-coil pickup hum. However it must be connected to ground. When dealing with the copper tape, a jumper cable can be soldered to ground (although this is redundant if the outer shell of a potentiometer is already in contact with it).

@russputin6294
@russputin6294 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ellen. A "ground connection" in this instances refers to an electrical earth or "ground" which, for our purposes, doesn't necessarily involve physical earth or dirt. In this instance connecting a wire to the metal of the Farady cage then the other end to a good electrical earth is all that is required. For instance connecting the other end of the wire to a good, clean, cold water pipe should suffice. Scrape the pipe until you can see shiny clean bare metal then trap the bared end of the earth wire against it using, for instance, a hose clip. Make sure that the wire makes good, tight contact against the metal of the water pipe. Better still connect to the EARTH terminal only of a three pin mains supply plug but don't even attempt to mess with mains electricity unless you're 100% confident; A direct shock from the mains is even more lethal than exposure to 5G!! ;0) Hope this helps; if you need any more assistance please message back. Good luck and good health to you! Russell

What I've found is if you use aluminum, Cobalt and Copper layers you can block quite a bit more. I line the inside of my phone cases with this combination to stop the side of my phone that is against my body from radiating into my body. The amount of WIFI routers my phone finds goes from ALL to basically what is in my own house only with this setup. I imagine that using a similar combination of layers in the box might fare better than just straight copper tape. MAKE SURE THE ADHESIVE IS CONDUCTIVE if you try this setup.

Also... will you show an image of what the signal looks like, is it a straight beam with a measurable height and width..or does it have spread to it like Illustrations of the sun's ray's we often see..or is it something else ? Hi Scotty! I think your Box may work without a copper cushon if you fold the copper foil around the corners where the lid comes down without pasting them on. The foil will stand up a bit & press against the foil on the lid. Of course it only works if you don't winkle the foil. It is probably better to use ordinary thin copper foil that has no stickie side. Then you can fold it like a sheet of paper & have straight corners.

Could you run a "grounding" wire on the inside of the box from the bottom to the top to ensure connection or is it an issue of an air gap between the top seal not an electrical disconnected?

Scottie, I Love your channel and want you to know that. Even though this vid is several months old I am only seeing it now and have a worthwhile comment to make, so here goes .... Most everyone has an old microwave oven and many do not use them these days, due to the fact they blow up the cells of the foods, rendering them un-recognizable to our body and end up as clumps of cellulite, clinging to the tissues in our body and offering next to no nutrition at all. Many years ago I would boil water in a microwave, but then I realized that water also has cells and has memory, soooo I now only use my old, hand dialed timer, (not digital buttons, in other words) as a Faraday Cage. People can cut the cord off or simply un-plug and make the end of the cord unavailable to anyone and Wah Lah ! A place to store all things techie. That being said, all microwaves are not created equal and some may leak a bit, so checking it with an emf meter is suggested. Hope this helps someone. : )

Shielding from EMPs is kinda tricky. In short, no one really knows and it depends on the type/intensity of EMP along with a lot of other factors. I did a vid on that here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nKyEZtWbnd3YhWg.html

How do I make a Faraday cage for a router to block all potential wifi signals BUT still allow the ethernet cable to leave the box!!???????
@JustPlainRob
@JustPlainRob 6 жыл бұрын
The best material would be a metal screening mesh, aluminum, iron, steel. As long as the holes in the mesh are (even at diagonal) smaller than the wavelength(or even half-wavelength if you want to be super safe) then it will collect the radio signals attempting to pass through it. It's also highly recommended to ground the cage, so the electrical signals it's blocking have a path away from the contents. You can just line the top and bottom with screening, and solder a small wire from top to bottom screen in the hinge corners. Run a thin enamel wire to a nearby conduit or pipe or something. Hot glue is great for insulating multiple layers of screening layered above each other(which should share the same ground if available).

We use steel mesh in the cellular industry to block RF. Its the same grid size as screen for a house window. AceHardware I noticed sells sheets about .5mm thick of aluminum with holes built in (its a much stronger screen mesh for screen doors for trailers ect). Its exactly the same diameter as whats on the windows of a microwave oven. Very effective.

@@qq84 NOPE, 5G frequency range is from around 2 GHz up to 120+ GHz. The wavelength is inversely proportional to the frequency so at 120 GHz, we're looking at VERY small wavelengths and obviously, half-wave is half as small. Copper, specifically Beryllium-Copper alloy, is The best readily available screening tape material. No gaps! (Used to work in EMI / RFI regulatory compliance lab.)

You should be able to cut a little teeny-tiny slot in the side for the charging cable. Fill it with foil. As a Faraday box, it should still work okay as long as it's a tight seal. If you made the hole big enough for a USB connector to fit thru, that would prolly be too big and you'd get signal leakage.

My friend Amber almost died from a cell tower that got installed close to her home and since then she’s been very into this stuff. She referred me to this meter which currently is priced at $148.80 on amazon. 6 months ago when she sent it to me it was $124. The price and demand keeps going up bc I people are getting educated. She said this meter has just as good RF detection as $500-$1,000 meters she’s owned. It’s an absolute steal for its value. Measures EMF, magnetic fields and RFs that cell towers shoot off. Search “gq emf 390 meter” in Amazon and it should pop up.

Beautiful idea with the bag! I'll try this with a double coated bag only (no box). Wonderful information! There might be an issue in the wifi experiment. As i understood you used your phone as the wifi hotspot? If so, it needs both the cell signal and the wifi signal to transmit. If it you don't receive wifi on the computer it's not necessarily blocking the wifi, it might be blocking the cell signal only or wifi only or both... (Or i missed something). Could you link to the studies you mention on 5g and faraday cages? Thanks!

Hi Scottie, thank you so much for all your info, love your channel! this might already have been asked, but: won't the aluminium/copper edges "wear out" & break with continued opening & closing of the box? Also, What if I lined a metal box with copper & add a copper bag? Would that work better? And!: What kind of box would I need to protect UBS sticks, SIM cards & external harddrives against an EMF blast? I am an amateur photographer, so protecting my data is very important to me. Many thanks in advance, B.

@@Bee-28 That's a bit harder to do... I did a vid on EMPs here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nKyEZtWbnd3YhWg.html In short, the Faraday box would offer some protection, but it's difficult to know exactly how much.
