Over the years Lou Sauzedde has invented a lot of unique tools. But unless you've worked with him, you've never seen these two tools before.
They eliminate one of the greatest frustrations of wooden boat repair -- removing damaged screws without destroying the surrounding wood. You won't find them in any hardware store or chandlery. But if you watch the video, you'll be well on your way to making your own. And as Lou says, "Being a very happy shipwright."

Another reason why it pays to watch Lou's videos. It's like having a trusted old uncle who is a master craftsman and who lets you hang around in the shop with him. That kind of teaching can't be bought.

I like you video’s very much, learn some things every time. What you mentioned about the planks that get off the frames in the bilges area: I have seen it very extreem when a Bantry Bay Gig was put on a trailer with no (or too low) support at the stem and stern. That way the whole hull will distort in a way like bending a metal tube. In the middle the tube will flatten one side and will get wider square to that side. Thats what happens to any old hull where the two most heavy parts: the stem and the stern, are having no support by the water displacement and will pull downwards and different like it has in the mid section, where it is pushed upwards. The part where the hull gets wider is at the bilges. Or am I wrong?

I’ve always used a version of your slot cutter but the screw sucker is a new one for me. I’ll have to try that. Being in Canada I encounter Robertson screws much of the time so I use a square shank awl to clean out my screw heads and a nice sharp Robby bit hammered in to clean up the profile. I have a few other tricks up my sleeve for when that doesn’t work though.

No reason why you couldn't under cut a square bit driver to make a puller like his slotted puller. Same idea, just four sides instead of two.

Thomas Russell well I figure I may just have to try that next time I’m in need. All new builds for me at the moment though so hopefully I won’t need.

The tools and tips are great. I like the part about using screwdrivers for an easy start of a tool with a haft and handle ready made. I used two old Philips to make a right and a left handed pull shave set for chair making. I wonder if an old Philips could be used for getting out bronze Philips screws with the cross slots filled up with old paint, resin, bedding compound. Little teeth could be cut in the driver edges with a Dremel so that a rocking motion that would clear the stuff out of the screw head. I know I'll try that next time.

Ah, yes, the slot cutter. I recall seeing you do this during a previous build/repair on another channel. I nearly immediately copied your idea, only I ground it from a Co5 HSS rod, so that I could slot even hardened screws. I have used it many times since!

It stays sharp for a surprisingly long time with bronze screws. I would cut slots in ss screws, but you'll have to sharpen it much more often.

Nice tool but I suspect often when the screw metal is detoriated this will break the head into two parts. As there are at least two different tools to remove screws with broken heads, I'd be curious to see how you remove these. Same goes for screws which still don't move after cutting a fresh slot. And at last how do you recognize if the screw is shearing off while turning and what do you do then? This video is only the very start of removing screws.

So, an engraving chisel made from a long phillips bit and a narrowed wide blade flat screwdriver with an undercut tip to grab the lip of the slot. Got it. That will come in handy in a furniture repair shop and an old home repair business as well as the boat-house. Thanks Lou.

Drill the heads out, pull the board, then cats paw or what ever works for you to pull the remaining nail from the wood member underneath. There is also a tool that can be driven in to grab the nail and pry it out, but it will damage the outer board, so unless you are sure you are replacing the plank, that tool is a bad idea.

Yeah, but you don't know if the plank is being replaced until you get inside to inspect the cause of the cornering. If it is a broken frame, the plank is probably reusable after the frame is sistered/repaired.
